The unreleased Xtraloveable video.

Lala Escarzega has confirmed that she shot a video for Xtraloveable with Prince. If you click on the pictures, I've linked to her Instagram where she's written some wonderful words about her friendship with Prince. That's her silhouette in these images from the video and she may be sending me some more images from the video soon.

I spoke to Lala directly about it, as well as Dr Funkenberry to try and find out more. Prince really believed in this song and felt that it was potentially a huge hit, and at one stage Prince had big plans for the push of the song and release of the video. Why that didn't happen, I'm not sure, but both Lala and Funkenberry have said how important this video was to Prince.

I really hope we get to see this video soon. I know everyone has different opinions on the different versions of the song but I love them all, so would be really happy to see it.

Thank you for posting this. Wonderful words indeed... those were my feelings too, that despite the fame thing, he was so very normal and trying to connect and interact with people. Deep down I feel that all that he did was essentially done for that reason, to desperately try and reach out to others and his music was his gifts to us all. He was a very loving and generous man and some people failed to recognise that. I miss him dearly and my appreciation of all that he did will not end just because he finally reached his destination.

I like all versions of this song. And I definitely agree that, given the right promotion, it could have been a huge song for Prince.

I have loved this song ever since it came out. heart

I used to listen to the original Extraloveable too (the 1983 version) at the same time period but now I can't find it anywhere. I hope that it gets released from The Vault. Just imagine it! Insane.

Lala Escarzega full words on Instagram

This is a silhouette of Prince and I, from the video Xtralovable, which I used to tease Prince that it was spelled wrong.
I miss him so deeply.
Posting this is bittersweet.
If you know me, you know that I don't care for fame or hype. It means nothing to me without him here. I see many using his name now for the wrong reasons.
But this video, I learned, was important to him.
He was my friend first, & an icon 2nd in my world. I used to tell him, "I think I forget who you are sometimes". And he would give me big eyes and a funny face and say, "uh, yeah!" Lol!

That is one thing I know he appreciated about me. Prince just wanted to be normal around his inner circle. That is why he stayed in Minneapolis.

Because people treated him normal.

We would go to the movies (albeit, he'd still shut down the theatre), the store, coffee shops & drive around MN and he could do so because he knew he was "safe" there.
Sometimes when we'd drive around, Prince would do this hilarious thing where he'd say "watch this" and then he'd find some random stranger walking down the street and very animatedly stick out his hand and wave "hi" to them.

Most people would casually wave back.
I thought it was so funny. And he'd do it all the time because he knew it made me laugh.

We had so much fun together. But we also argued, as those who are close, inevitably do. During December of 2015, we hadn't spoke in a few weeks. We were distant.
I got very very sick in January of this year and when he found out I was in the hospital, he reached out to me immediately. That was Prince's way of demonstrating his love for me.
No matter the distance between us.

Which for Prince, if you know him... He can ignore you for a long time if he wants to. And he had... Up until when he found out I was sick.
It makes me sad, that I could not do more to save him. It breaks me inside & makes me angry.

I had just spoken to him a few days before he transcended, (after his plane scare), and told him how much I missed him & how badly it had scared me when I heard of an emergency landing.

He told me he was ok & with a smile. He told me not to worry.

We both talked about meeting soon. (Cont. below)
lalaescarzega(Continued)... I wish I had've gone to see him sooner.
During the memorial, one thing that stuck with me was Tavis' speech and a speech by the pastor... Tavis spoke on how he had been re-evaluating his own life and how he kept asking himself "why". That resonated with me because I did the very same.
Then the pastor spoke later to answer Tavis. He said, "Do not question God" nor his timing. We do not know Gods plan and to ask "why", is too limited for Gods knowledge.
So I will try not to ask "why"... Although, with my ungodly abilities and reasoning and limited human understanding, it will be difficult. I will try to have Faith instead... and on days where it hurts the most.. I will remember how much he lived life to the fullest, how he loved me, our good times and I will demonstrate in my life your profound effect on me through my creativity. I will see you in all my art, and in all my love... I know you will be with me, always. #xtralovable #extraloveable #prince #love @drfunkenberry @greenteapapi

Wonder why he shelved it. Lala's beautiful and you can tel she genuinely cared for him. Is this the version with Andy or just the horns? Looks like the video's from 2012/2013.

She appeared in the Chocolate Box and Screwdriver videos. On her Facebook page she's been sharing a lot of stories about her friendship/working relationship with P. Apparently he wanted to take her own tour but thought the fans would compare her too much to Mayte.

Saw this online from back in 2013. Looks like it's from the videotoo. Was this the single art? Confused because Prince vault shows a different image.

I hope it comes out. This remake with the horns added became one of the most joyful things I listened to these past few years from Prince. I'm one of those that liked it much more than the original Linn drum 80's version.

I'll never forget how big and energetic it sounded at the concert in Chicago in 2012. The horn section was at the back raised up on a platfrom, and they were dancing with so much energy in sync. Truly the thing that breaks me apart about Prince is remembering those joyous moments of energy at the concerts, live. Priceless experience.

well the song has been released a few times. there is an itunes version with different art,
but this one that you posted was used for the release of the version that was up on the
3rdeyegirl site called 3rdeyetunes iirc. so this is official artwork, for the second version.

Ah. Gotcha. i hope this single and video gets a release. i personally prefer the original, but I dont think the re-edit is bad. It sounds very fresh.

Still would feel strange to re-release a track that was already re-released. I like the new version, just don't know if i prefer the original new recording or the Reloaded one.

.

Made me think of this blog on The Spectator, a poor article about the Vault:

"Unfortunately, Prince had no idea what to do with the gold mine he created. ‘Extraloveable’ is an illustrative case. Originally recorded (but not released) in 1982, it is one of the finest examples of his signature sound, in which old school funk meets new-wave pop. The lyrics – rape threats and all – are spat at the microphone in an urgent, breathy falsetto.

A sanitised, easy-listening version was included on his most recent album last year. It wouldn’t sound out of place in the repertoire of a hotel jazz band. The raw energy of the original is entirely lost. This is nothing short of vandalism, and it’s awful to imagine what, in his dotage, he might have done to other gems in the vault. How could he have ruined ‘Electric Intercourse,’ the bittersweet piano ballad that was almost included on Purple Rain? What horrors could he inflict on ‘All My Dreams’, the surreal synth opera that should have been the final track on Sign o’ the Times?"

LOl ironically i dont totally disagree with the article re: making unecessary tweaks to perfectly fine songs. Extraloveable makes sense somewhat because he made it sound fresh and modern. I love the new wave funk of the original, but the sound isnt very 2016. I do wish he would have kept the original tempo though. its almost too slow for me. i would hate to see any release of electric intercourse that did not include the original backing track. no horns on that one please (die hard horn fan here btw).

with that said, if extraloveable were to come out right now as a single it wouldnt be so odd. they could even do it "old school" style with a proper b-side, since vinyl is such a thing at the moment.... to the fandom it would be sorta old news but the general public has absolutely NO idea, which is really what would make it work, especially if the video is as amazing as it seems.

Yes sadly the blog is spot on with their assessment of the new version of extraloveable. And almost as bad as what he did to 1999 with the "new master." Vandalism is a great description of it and the thought of more great gems from the vault getting that treatment would almost be criminal.

The images from the video look beautiful though.

I disagree, it's not vandalism. Yes I prefer the originals, hope to get them in HQ one day.

But if they release some more Phase albums, with tracks from the vault in new fresh versions like he did with Xtralovable, Feel U Up, IECGYA and 1000 X's & O's i won't complain.

The New Master is a bad example (even though I don't hate it).

Of course there is no right or wrong, it's just personal taste. But it does speak to why People gravitate to someone like Prince in the first place rather than another artist. Later Prince was a different artist than young Prince. That's not a bad thing either. But I would describe young Prince as a hefty, solid, granite round rock that could plow through anything with a little bit of momentum. A rock that rolls.
And older Prince as a softer, cube shaped limestone that requires a little more force to get going. A rock that's softer and that doesn't roll verry well.

To be honest I'm not sure what "right" we really have to complain about Prince's rerecording of the original Extraloveable, and I certainly wouldn't really view it as vandalism. Prince never intended the original version to come out, and thus despite the fact that we've grown attached to the original demo over the years I think it's hardly justified for us to complain about the rerecorded version not meeting the standard of a version that we were never meant to hear in the first place. Nonetheless I would very much prefer that the original version does get an official release, I pretty much love all the different recordings equally so it would be cool to have them all released to the public to enjoy.
