Don't Have Conversations About Prince with Non-Prince Fans

It will only frustrate you. I nearly got into a shouting match with my aunt about it. I told her I don't like to talk to people about Prince because they have barely any surface knowledge of the man, his career, depth, etc. beyond a few tracks from the 80s and whatever news stories they got pieces of over the years.

The conversation we had confirmed my point.

All they talk about is him being a JW and not swearing.

I actually tried to engage someone about it and talk about how he was always extremely Christian, but they just kept repeating that he was a JW.

And on the not swearing thing, when people who know two songs say that, I want to ask "Well, which song with swearing in it do you miss or think is better uncensored?" because I KNOW the only songs they know are Kiss, Purpe Rain and When Doves Cry.

It's why I'm here.

I feel I need to make up a new reason I'm so sad. Maybe I'll just start saying I'm just tired, which I am, but I hate getting the "still?" Response when I say the real reason why I'm sulking.

They don't get it. I may not still be on this planet were it not for him. His music was my escape from the world so cold.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

I stopped talking about music period with other people.

I just say I like everything and leave it at that.

Two people who've said very disparaging things about Prince while he was alive had glowing things to say on their FB when he died.

I totally feel you on that.👍🏽 I've been a fan since Dirty Mind and I learned early on not waste my time with people that don't get him or only know a few songs and feel like they can speak with authority. They dismiss him like he was no big deal or just some washed up 1980s act with only a couple of hit songs. My father is like that so I don't entertain any discussion with him about Prince, it will only lead to me being frustrated😤 Just move on and save yourself some grief

My father let me hang up Bee Bees' posters, but I doubt he would have put up with Prince on the wall if I had still lived at home at the time. He's on my wall now though. lol

Tell me about it. I call them the Purple Rain people.

I had one up in my face on Saturday and it was all I could do not to punch him.

Now I just change the subject, disbelief

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Not really they just want to talk about the commercial hits and the song he "wrote" for The Bangles (when in fact Appollonia 6 recorded it first!rolleyes ), and not the songs I like and have no idea about his proteges. I'm like hrmph shrug disbelief pissed most of the time. That's another reason why I came here biggrin

I do understand what you're all saying but this is a frustration that has existed for years, right? I've always opted for the 'just give me 5 songs' challenge, tailoring the selections to sounds I know that person is already into. The music says much more than any words I could ever say, they either get it or they don't. If it opens their minds, great. If it doesn't I still got the chance to play a bit of Prince which is always a win and we move on. They know not what they do, the loss is theirs, don't let them get you down

Yeah I agree. It's just the recent events have pushed it to the front now. People have been giving me crap about Prince for years. I'd say in the last 5 or so that he started getting more respect for his genius. The 90s were hard.

God bless Minnesota. There's something in the water cuz y'all got some great music coming out of there. I realized a few weeks ago a huge chunk of my favorites are out of MPLS. Glad to share a border with y'all wink

You're right, agree people are more sensitive now. Guess I've been lucky that most people I know have always respected my love for Prince, aside from in my younger years where he was judged and so was I. Everything aint for everybody, can't all have fine taste like ourselves wink

Wow! I'm so jealous of this! I just avoid talking about him with anyone because all I hear is, "oh yes I'm sooooo sad, I loved Little Red Corvette/Purple Rain/When Doves Cry" (delete as appropriate). *sigh*

I also have to lie about why I'm so down at the moment...even to my own family!

I realised that 29 years ago. But it's cool - if someone doesn't think much of him, or even thinks very little of him, it's their loss.

Obviously you're not gonna chat about Prince with someone who straight up doesn't like him, but what's wrong with people who only know a few of his songs? If you talk with them they might even end up learning more about him.

For example, I like Michael Jackson but in reality don't know any of his work beyond Off the Wall and the hits. If I met a serious MJ fan, I'd be delighted if they talked to me in detail about their idol and tried to get me interested too. On the other hand, if they refused to talk with me about him because I don't know enough to gain their approval, to be honest I'd think they're a total dick.

To clarify, this doesn't apply to most people on the Org (not you OP), but it is a self-righteous attitude I've been seeing a lot around here over the past couple of weeks.

I am with you on that one.

Growing up he was the only thing that let me know it was alright to be "different" and "wierd" and "strange" and that as long as I had myself and stayed true to me, then I would be alright.

Fast foward 30 some years and I am reasonably well adjusted, strong and independent, but mostly I raised two kids on the rules that whoever you are, I love you no matter what and THEY grew up strong.

My daughter wrote a huge piece on facebook about how Prince was the "man in her house" growing up and how that affected her and taught her to look beyond surface.

He was a strong influence to those of us who grew up in that era.

Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up

It's literally the quickest way to lose friends. I've had to stop talking about him as much since his passing as people have grown tired of it. I'm still so sad that it's all I can think and talk about but others have moved on. And then I get upset that they don't care enough... that's what the org is for.

My aunt knows someone who knew Vanity and relayed what Vanity said about how Prince left her high and dry. Great I said, a second hand relaying of an over 30 year old anecdote, "what am I supposed to do with that?" I asked. Again, she relayed things she heard Carmen Electra say, great an over twenty year old anecdote. Prince's massive output in music, performing, collaborating, etc, lost on her. Over the years I've never cared about any of the would be "news" about Prince, the love life, supposed weirdness, and excentricity, etc. I cared about the next album, when is the next show and how can I get to it. The non-P fans don't value that obviously and are left to peddle media bits. Sorry if there are typos. I am on the subway.
