I think he would have been fine with Shonda using some. Was this aired already?

They used Controversy in the current season of Scandal. It was the episode where the president's daughter was at a wild party, and Olivia went inside to rescue her.

So, Prince must have let Shonda use that while he was alive, because that was ages ago.

Yes, I watch Scandal, and it's garbage. But I can't stop watching. Maybe Tyka is a Shondaland fan too?

We knew this would happen.

Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up

I'd hope the family would be dead set against that stuff but using his music on tv and in movies I think is great PR. I've discovered lots of artists because they used a song in a movie.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

Might I suggest the Time classic, Get It Up?

Who is the decision maker on this currently right now though... His family, Bremer, or the existing employees that were running things like this previously?

Scandal was filmed months ago though, so it was licensed before his death.

As long as the picture of a show doesn't have to be changed, Post Production can change the music in any episode before it airs quickly and without it costing the show too much extra money. The key was getting permission from the estate per the Bank who is acting as temporary executor of the estate. Undoubtedly they consulted the family first, and it takes time to get all the legalities taken care of before they can go in and change the music before they have to deliver the show to the network to broadcast. Which explains why she couldn't do it on the shows the week after he died, but it is impressive she got it all taken care of in 2 weeks. And especially for the scene in Scandal, the song really worked well.

They will have/make more money than they will ever be able to spend without licensing his music for Viagra commercials or soap operas disguised as TV shows.

.

Prince RARELY let his music be used. I hope that doesn't start now -- under any circumstances -- but this is why you leave a will. I hope other artists are learning from this mistake and having their own drawn up.

To me it looks like the family is just trying to agree without causing too much disruption over artistic licenses they don't know much about. Plus they all make money from it so why ruffle feathers?

Sigh at the inevitable Hershey Kiss commercial and a Little Red Corvette commercial. At least those might be better than NJ's Party City Thriller hack job.

Prince set up the licensing portion of his company way before his death. I think they announced it in 2014.

I wish Prince fans would stop pretending he never licensed his music for TV shows and movies before. "Controversy" was used on "Scandal" (another Shonda Rhimes production) months ago when he was still alive. Also, remember the sync deal NPG Music Publishing did with the NFL for "Funk N' Roll"? If we see Prince music in beef ads, then by all means be outraged, but so far the music licensing appears to be in line with the way it has been done when Prince was alive.
