The man jumped off speakers in high heels...of course he had hip and knee issues. I've been a nurse walking on hospital floors for 20 years and one of my knees is bad so I can only imagine the pain Prince was in.

They've been talking about him having hip problems for like a decade now. The media's now reporting that he had hip surgery in 2010, I dunno how verified that is.

Sheila E. I believe Damaris said so too in one of interviews.

It's been rumored that Prince had hip surgery (hip replacement?) in 2010.

All you have to do is look at how Prince was dancing for years:

- the splits;

- jumping from platforms;

- pushing himself on his back as he does in SOTT during Housequake;

- all the quick, repetitive steps (example: IWD4U/Baby I'm A Star live).

All of these mostly high impact moves in high heels, for about 20 years.

It's very easy to believe he had problems, he would need to be made of titanium not to have some.

Apparently, Jimmy Jam discussed the hip problem. Also Kevin Smith alluded to a pain in Prince's leg after a show in his Evening With monologue. That was around 2001.

Jimmy Jam opens up about Prince's hip

Prince's longtime friend and collaborator Jimmy Jam has shed some light on the superstar's hip issues, which may have contributed to his demise.

Reports suggest the Purple Rain hitmaker suffered an alleged overdose of painkiller Percocet in the days before his death on Thursday, and some outlets have speculated he might have been taking the drugs to help combat hip pain.

https://au.news.yahoo.com...inces-hip/

The ever-private star never went public with his health issues, but producer pal Jimmy Jam discovered Prince was suffering through their mutual friend Morris Day, the lead singer of The Time.

"He actually had hip-replacement surgery and we did a reunion tour around 2009/2010 and I remember Morris was raving about it and he said, 'I've gotta tell Prince, I should have done this a lot earlier'," Jam told Access Hollywood.

"I knew that he had the surgery that I thought he had ... If he didn't, he was in pain, like, unbelievable (pain), because that's the way Morris felt too."

But Jimmy still can't believe the stories suggesting Prince may have been dependent on pain pills: "He's never really been a drug-taker of any sort. He has always lived a very clean lifestyle."

With all due respect, without a single piece of evidence saying he had hip problems, it's easier and makes more sense to believe he didn't.

if the people who knew him personally say he had hip/knee problems for years, that's good enough for me.

Kinda off topic, but Eddie Van Halen said he had to have major hip surgery too. He said the combination of jumping off of drum risers and speakers caught up with him. He finally did it and said he was glad he did. I thought about P when I heard that.

I would bet that hip problems/surgery is a common thing for many performers.

I would not be surprised if he had hip problems and then some. I hurt my back playing a game on WiiU.. Yeah and I was only 27 at the time. Now if I am not careful my back aches alot more then I would like. For everything he did while on stage, its a wonder he could walk.

The guy is human, it's not hard to believe he had hip issues

I recall when they examined Michael jacksons body they found his feet were in absolutely terrible condition, as well as his back, knees, etc .

Prince would have to have been the same if not WORSE as he did all his hyper energetic dancing wearing 3inch high heeled boots and also toured far more consistently than MJ ever did

Even Lady Gaga already had to have a hip operation at 27/28 years old when she injuring it dancing in high heels.. It was quite a big story in 2012/13 or so??

No secret that Dancers put their bodies through so much strain and at times unnatural movement repetitively and this would wreak havoc on your joints especially as you age..

So i do believe he had the hip problem but I can't work out when he had it operated on as he wouldve had to have been out of action for a while and the guy toured / performed continuously his whole career?? Was there ever a period of 6-9months or so when he didn't perform?

I remember when this first came to light, it was when he cancelled the Jam of the Year tour date in LA. I had flown in for the concert and to visit a friend. My friend picked me up at the airport and we drove to the arena only to find complete car chaos as everyone was leaving. I got a refund later that week. The tale was that he collapsed or tripped during rehearsal on a ramp to the stage. Then the rumor was it was the sudden ciritcal pain from a worn out hip. Well, he was still doing split after that as evidenced on the Hit n Run rour and the Rave 2000 concert, but by the time ONA came along, we never saw him do splits again.

I never thought there was true fact out there, but then people cloese to him did seem ti mention it in interviews.

By the way, Sheila said (and she said this in person at her presentation at the 2002 Celebration) that she had to quite drumming after the Lovesexy tour because she wore out a ligament from the kickdrum kicking over the years. She said she was tlaking on the phone at her home, and all of a sudden it was as if her leg gave out and she just fell down. That's why she never tours with a kit anymore and never plays the kickdrum. (correct me if Im wrong about her playing a full kit regularly since 1989)

A cousin of mine who has Ehlers-Danlos thinks that may have been what it was. She thinks this pic showing hypermobility may reveal the issue.

Apparently it causes excruciating joint pain, among other issues.

He told Kevin Smith that he had problems with "his leg", fifteen years ago.

I learned about "the hip problem" years ago through Wikipedia. The Wikipedia article cited this article published by The Guardian in 2009: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2009/jun/11/prince-refuses-hip-surgery

Eerily - the article references pain killers:

"He's in a lot of pain," a source told the Hollywood Report's Showbiz 411 blog this week. "[Prince] is popping pain killers and hoping it will all go away."

Some news sources have referenced Prince's canes at the final Atlanta show and in "recent years". Thankfully, the article points out that Prince has been carrying a cane since the early 1990s. During Prince's recent appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show, Arsenio recounted a story (I believe from the late 80s) that referenced Prince carrying a cane.

Prince ran around the stage at his final Atlanta show - he only used a cane when he left the stage the final time, and it always came across as a fashion accessory.

I agree that a credible source hasn't verfied Prince's "hip problem" - but common sense paired with stories of personal encounters really authenticates that something was up. At least - for me.

I played Riff Raff in a production of Rocky Horror once. I spent about 8 weeks hunched over on stage, walking with a twisted leg and limp, jumping off of set pieces, and dancing in heels. When the run was over, I was exhausted and it took a lot of time to get over the aches that come with straining your body and doing a high-energy show. Adrenaline sets in during the performance and you don't realize the toll you're taking on your body.

Kevin Smith's story is surely another confirmation that he had the bad hip.

There is also footage online of prince at a signing session from the early 90s where he has the cane and it's not like he's strutting along with it as a prop - he is literally using it to help him walk!! It supports him the whole time he walks and you can visibly see him use it to get into his chair and he doesn't let go of it until he is sat in his chair..
