2004 Grammys...Still Freaking Brilliant

I know amongst all the threads produced in the last week, this benchmark appearance has to have been discussed once or 18 times. I still remember watching it the first time of course, Prince had kind of been in the wilderness for the earliest 2000s and then there he was, in silhouette, walking down those steps, holding the purple symbol guitar and singing the 20 year old song that was still his calling card. It was different, a little Broadway maybe, but it was electrifying too. And you wonder, is there going to be some kind of gimmick here and damn if Beyonce doesn't come trudging on stage, and now the song was a duet. It was abbreviated and you wonder where there going to go next and they start singing "Baby I'm a Star" with more energy than we had certainly seen from Prince in a while. BIAS rolls into a funky short take on "Crazy in Love" and then "Let's Go Crazy" with a stunning guitar solo to end it. In 5 minutes and change Prince had won back so many who either forgotten him or wrote him off. Prince hadn;t had a hit in 10 years and it didn't matter. That night, Prince became a man of the masses again and he followed it up with a mega-successful tour, the RRHOF and so on. The power of a 5 minute performance jumpstarted a tour that brought in over 30 million dollars. That was the power of Prince. People never completely forgot about him, a lot of them just had to be reminded that he was still out there and every bit as brilliant as ever.

All good things they say never last...
