What's happening to the money?

With the massive increases in sales of songs and albums it seems someone is raking in a bucket load of cash (Warners I'm assuming).

It seems really fucked up that there's some company (or companies) making a profit off of the man's death.

Do you guys think we could (or should?) start some sort campaign to get them to donate the profits to some worthwhile charity? Children's education or helping the homeless. Maybe something music related?

Yes. We could get them to donate to all those things.

So, when someone dies and folks rush out to buy their music to have a piece of that movement, where should the money go? Just funnel it to a homeless shelter?

Prince was a businessman and his music was his business. He took money from folks to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. Let's not pretend that money has some kind of emotional value to it - it doesn't. As much as Prince talkd about making money as he did, he also talked about it being evil to focus so hard on the money.

Not sure why his fans are so possessive about all things Prince. You have, in your ownership, something more valuable than money: his output.

I sure they could donate some $ to worthwhile causes. But ALL the profits? That'd be silly and irresponsible as a corporation.

Prince was part of a business and no one at any point thought Prince was going to live forever. All parties knew that a record company would benefit from Prince's death....even po' lil' Prince.

Maybe a good deal of the money could go into running Paisley Park as a museum and Artist Development agency and/or studio.

That sounds cool. As long as it doesn't end up like Graceland...that place creeped me out. It would be cool if it had a purpose or function beyond collecting museum tour fees like Graceland. But it depends on what Prince had planned for paisley park or what his family/estate decides if he didn't.

You do realise which forum you're on right? It's kind of all about Prince here (or so I've heard).

Yes, the money should go to the homeless or the less fortunate. I thought I made that clear?

Profiteering from someone's death is immoral and disgusting. It doesn't matter if they were famous or not. It is a bad thing to do.

Money has plenty of emotional value when it means the difference between you and your loved ones going hungry or not.

The fact is, the companies who stand to profit from this man's death don't really need the money.

All I'm saying is that it would be nice if the money went to do some good in the world instead of just feeding some record executives cocaine habit.

So WBR is supposed to give all its money away? How would they sign new artists. ASSLOADS of WBR's performers are dead.

Profiting because someone died is not immoral or disgusting.

Say a loved one of yours died and they left u $20k. R u obliged to give it away less u profit from it...then, the person u give it to needs to give it aways cuz they got it from u who got it as a profit from a death...its silly.

Edit: killing someone to profit is immoral and disgusting.

that's where it should go

not to mention the musicians singers who contributed etc should get something rather than a record company

slaphead

I hope to God that Prince had written a Will. If it all goes to Tyka the whole lot will be flogged off to the highest bidder.

I don't think it's silly. I think it's the right thing to do. Even a gesture like giving away half the profit would be better than nothing.

And to be clear, if someone leaves me $20K then they've made a choice to do that.

I'm pretty sure that in this case (although I could be wrong) that Prince didn't make his last will and testament to ensure that the record company got paid.

Maybe he did. But I doubt it.

Do they technically have a right to the money? Yes.

Is it morally right to keep it? My answer is no.

Obviously you disagree.

I guess that makes me a socialist or something.

Whatever. R enbalmers wrong for making a living and earning money? Are funeral homes immoral for making a profit?

A record company, to be moral, is obligated to sell ray Charles' records at cost and work for free? People don't like to work for free so Rays CD's would stop getting g pressed and fewer and fewer people would have them. Radio station wouldn't be able to play mister Ray's records and Ray would disappear from the airwaves...

I get the emotion behind what you're saying. But to pretend to actually impliment it into life is short-sighted and it doesn't even make u a socialist. A socialist enbalmer is allowed to eat. The enbalmer your concept puts forth can't eat cuz he can't profit.

You're talking about people doing jobs and I'm talking about exploitation.

It's the difference between being the guy who buries the body and the one who goes through the deceased's pockets looking for coins.

The City is suggesting that or throwing the idea out there...I think turning Paisley Park into a museum would be right-on-time. Perhaps the family can work out a deal with the city so that all parties can benefit...
