First Song You Listened To... After

Curious, what was the first song you listened to after you heard the news of Prince's death?

I had a really hard time deciding. I ended up listening to the Hits/B-sides which started with Controversy. I had to turn it off when it got to Purple Rain. Still too soon.

What about you?

Happened to be "It", as that was where my iPod was from listening to the "Crystal Ball" album earlier that day.

Unexpetedly, it was The Love We Make, from Emancipation... That was just suddenly what I needed to hear, followed immediately by Sometimes It Snows In April.

Still trying to take in the news.... Doesn't make sense.

When I turned on my iPod the first song I heard was "The Question of U" and I think I cried for a good 2 hours.

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Raspberry Beret, it's always been able to lift my spirits in the past, no matter the reason i felt down.

This time it didn't, i just sat staring at my purple walls.

I chose the Parade LP. I wasn't and am still not in the mood for his party songs.

The first song I heard, I think was "Anotherloverholenyohead". The video was playing on MTV. The opening chords of "Diamonds & Pearls" and "Don't Talk 2 Strangers" gets the most emotional reaction from me now.

I had to leave my office when I heard the news and go for a walk. I listened to the Dirty Mind album the whole way through.

Soft and Wet. I heard on the radio when I was really little. I wasn't sure if it was a man, woman, or Sylvester. Then I remember hearing IWBYL and WYWTMSD a year later. This was when you had no idea who the artist was and what they looked like most of the time. I really didn't put it together until my older brother bought Dirty Mind the day it came out. I saw the cover and thought "Is this a guy? Why is he wearing that outifit? What's going on here?" Then I heard the first track and my mind was blown. I know who he is. I recognize that voice. It's Prince!!! I became a fan from then on. It was a joy and pleasure to be alive when a phenomenal artist like him existed. There will never be another.

That was "Clouds" from AOA.... a snippet of a performance of it (do not from which TV show, anyone knows?) was shown many times on CNN on the day of his death. And then in the morning at 6am CET after sitting 8hours in front of CNN and browsing the internet for news, I suddenly needed to hear "Clouds"...

It may be a bit of a cliché, but for me it was Purple Rain. Or at least, as far as I'm aware. I was 10 at the time. It was only in 1992 I became a real fan when I asked a friend for acopy of only the song. He gave me the entire album on tape and I was hooked. Have seen every live show in Holland and Belgium since 1993. In 2007 I went to one of the London O2 shows. Such good memories....

I was thinking that too, but that would be almost impossible to remember unless, as in your case, it was the very first single. But it was a nice story! "A man or a woman or Sylvester." biggrin

I thought the same thing and my first song I heard was "I Wanna be your Lover". I sat in silence for hours after hearing he died, I think it was "Baby I'm a Star".

Aha... Now I get it... Honestly, I can't remember what I listened to first after he died. It must have been a song in a memorial video somewhere. Right now I just watched Under the Cherry Moon.

I started out that morning before the news happened listening to Life Can Be So Nice, & planned on listening to Sometimes It Snows In April later in the day because I knew those 2 songs were recorded on that date in '85, little did I know I would listen to that song under different circumstances & that was the 1st song I listened to that evening.

The only songs I've listened to purposefully of my own were Into the Light and I will. On the headphones in the bath. Just once. The water helps with the tears. sad

Head not really processing music right now. Soundcloud for some reason is ok, hearing the crowd and claps and talking, feels like he's still here and things are the way they were.

Boss gave me permission to leave work within 45 minutes of the news hitting (she knew she wasnt getting any work out of me Thursday!). Got in my car and turned on 92.5 (San Diego)...the DJ was giving a rather eloquent Prince eulogy, you could hear his tears, and he played "Let's Go Crazy" followed by an unedited "Head". I've been smiling ever since. I finally understand what folks mean when they say you shouldnt be sad when someone passes, you should celebrate them. No sorrow for Prince, I'm just proud of and happy for him. But I digress...

Make it so, Number One...

But i was too devastated at that time I can't remember the sequence. I was in shock and crying as I went through a number of songs sad

The first song I heard after the news was Let's Go Crazy which was being played on the radio when I got to work. The first song I chose to listen to was Shut This Down. I know it's an odd choice - I had seen a list of the 25 Essential Prince songs and that was one on the list. I wanted to hear something recent.

I listened to purple rain. it felt right with it being the song he will most likely be remembered most by.

But after that the Beautiful Ones and When Doves Cry (my favourite song of all time) multiple times. But mostly I've been listening to his more recent work and songs i've never even listened to before.
