Songs Prince didn't write alone

I was curious if we could make a list of Prince songs, that he co-wrote (Slow Love). I read a lot of songs Levi wrote with him. Especially from the early years or up till Emancipation.

I'll start it off:

Do Me Baby (Andre Cymone)

Slow Love (Carole Davis)

That's heresay & has never been PROVEN. I love Andre & have attended his residency here in my city. But if someone stole a song from me EYE would NEVER accept another from him.

it is well accepted lore and there as an AC demo recoded of it from 1979.

and even AC has said it was his song:

From an interview i can not link to as it has some prince songs on it:

"Our friend and sort-of-manager Pepe Willie had a cousin or uncle who was a member of Little Anthony and the Imperials. I knew who they were because I was into them as a kid. Pepe said, “They are looking for songs.” I wrote a song that became controversial, in retrospect, because it became “Do Me, Baby.” I wrote that for the Little Anthony and the Imperials project. That song came out [on Prince’s Controversy] and I didn’t get credit for it. I had written it for a girlfriend at the time. She still has a copy of my demo.

I never got into all the controversy. I thought of it as we were all inspired by each other in the group, Grand Central. I brought things to the musical table, William, Morris, Terry, Charles, Linda, and Prince did too. I didn’t look at it as being ripped off."

As long as Andre has accepted it. prince has a gift of being able to mimic anyone note 4 note & make it his own sound. Andre would have NEVER been able to make it the hit it has become. So it really is prince's song in the end. He SLAYED it!

That is still 'co creation'

I mean basically what you just described if it was anyone else would be called 'Stealing'

Isn't Led Zeppelin going through that right now?

I believe he said the Ladder & Christopher Tracy's Parade/Little Girl Wendy's Parade has something borrowed from his father.

Before we get into this one, let's remember that Wendy & Lisa both said, "Did we write Purple Rain? No. But did we help it along? Yes." They talked about how they simply switched up some chords. Instead of a Bb, they did a Bbsus7. Instead of Gm, they put a Gm7 (add 4) on it. The Eb changed to Eb(add 2 - which added the F note, which is common throughout every cord pretty much).

Those little changes do completely convert a song's mood and feel. They talked about how the cords were pretty basic at first. Bb - Gm - F - Eb. But you start throwing in 7ths or 9ths, or 4ths, and now you got yourself a hit. For me, those changes are the color everyone credits W&L with in adding to Prince's music.

The more interesting note on this is that Prince felt it was very close to Journey's "Faithfully". From wikipedia,

"After recording the song, Prince phoned Jonathan Cain from Journey asking him to hear it, worried it might be too similar to "Faithfully", a Journey single composed by Cain which had recently been in the charts. Cain reassured Prince telling him the songs only shared the same four chords".

Either Prince or Andre Cymone stole parts from Eddie Hazel's song "Frantic Moment"

True! U right I did read that. I thought it was U.T.C.M. & Purple Rain also. But that's his Father whom he learned from so that's a obvious image of duplication.

Ugh, PrinceVault should have a category for those. There's so much data in that site that really should be improved and used for graphs... I mean, just imagine this for Prince.

I think Co-Write for the topic title is wrong

on Purple Rain, Wendy 'created' the opening chords, and Lisa orchestrated the strings that we hear near the end.

Co-Create might be a better word.

Here we go again with the did Wendy & Lisa really write or create this mess. disbelief

Eye surely hope when prince finishes his Memoirs. That he clarifies this once & 4 all. Which I'm pretty sure is the main reason he disbanded The Revolution in 1986.

Even if he does include stuff like this in his memoirs, it won't end the debate. I think his memoirs will raise more questions than they'll answer! If only because we'll only read his side of the story.

I see was mentioned abouve, but a good example is Soul Sanctuary. If you ever hear the demo by Sandra St Victor, it sounds pretty much like what is on the album, but the credit says by "Prince and Sandra St Victor". Supposedly she didn't even know he was going to use it and contacted him afterwards and they sent her a big check. This was from some interview with her years back.

Interesting because the very start of Faithfully does sound a lot like PR:
