Clare Fischer's take on Mountains

Am I the only one that would love to hear this unreleased version?

Princevault:

"Clare Fischer arranged and recorded orchestration for the song at some point in mid-late 1985 at Monterey Sound Studios, Glendale, CA, USA, but Prince preferred the track without orchestration, and chose to use the track without orchestration for the final release."

I'd rather collect Clare's own jazz albums. His accompanying orchestration in Parade enhances the songs on the album but might not be as interesting in isolation as one imagines. I'd give it a listen, though, same as I do to some bands out there doing covers of Prince's songs! Off topic--I heard a nice cover of "Holy River" recently.

Same goes for Life Can Be So Nice. Fischer's orchestration was not used (but exists somewhere).

.

Mountains may be may favorite Prince single. It's hard to imagine it with orchestration, but that's what happens when you listen to a track 15,000 times.

.

So much is going on in Life Can Be So Nice that it's hard to imagine a PLACE for orchestration.

Indeed. This is what makes it so alluring to me. I can't fully imagine it and there lies the air of mystery. Was it rejected by Prince it was not a good fit (did not sound great) or just wasn't Prince's flavor and yet shined in its own unique way?

I hope we get a chance to hear it someday so we can reach an informed conclusion. nod

One would be compelled to assume that much of the instrumentation on the tracks, particularly keyboard lines, would be eliminated from the mix, and replaced by Fischer's cinematic strings and horns, his contributions being partly influenced by what was eliminated (or, perhaps, instead allowed considerable license with a very basic set of tracks missing critical parts of their original melody).

.

I believe Mountains, with his work added, might be similar to his work on "The Screams of Passion". That Fairlight "choral voice" line being replaced by his wall of jazzy/"old movie" strings, some emotional lead-up shortly after the Linn begins, and then fully expanding to introduce and back the rest of the song.

.

Congrats on your new discovery - it's one of my favorite tracks by Prince. Have you had a chance to check out the extended version? It makes a great thing even better biggrin

Not yet, but i'm about to listen to it in these days to come, on a playlist i've made, aout 400 songs. The same with Tambourine, that is a great song musically; although i do not love the lyrics. But the music is just wonderful and trippy.

Not a huge fan of the extended version myself, the jamming is cool and the groove is great but was always hoping he'd extend the song itself.

Mountains is my favourite song on the Parade album. I also like Under the Cherry Moon. The video 4 Mountains is good too with the main focus on Wendy & Lisa. It should have been a bigger hit

When I first heard the song I fell in love with it. And when I heard that ending I knew this would be an extended version. I too, thought it would be more of a longer song. With lyrics and poetry and all that scrumptious stuff that happened in the early-mid 80s in Purple music
