Is he too stubborn to admit he is wrong not allowing his music on YouTube? Another view...

As a fan since the early 80s, I still can't understand his logic on this. A young neighbour of mine said he had heard the usual hits but was unsure about investing in his albums.... As someone who's first prince purchase was a fake copy of purple rain I see his point... I went on to buy all his albums day Of release and the pre purple rain days... So, this kid wanted to listen to some tracks from the likes of gold experience.... Can't even buy the cd anywhere!!!! Must he and the younger generation have to wait till prince is dead and all that they will get is a bombardment of compilations....😓😓😓😓😓😖😕

Maybe he's not wrong?

Maybe he has it set up to once he dies, it'll all just be free and out there. Maybe...obviously he doesn't have the same concerns about his legacy as us. Maybe he's prepared to loose some cash in an effort to make a statement about a musicians worth. That much seems obvious to me cuz he consistently makes moves that loose him dough but gain him ownership and control of his creations. Which to me, is a very important and worthwhile statement to make and stand to take.

Cuz at the end of the day...the people who WANT to hear his music can hear it.

Well I just typed Prince Empty Room video into Google and guess what? The video was the first hit at the top of the page.... so not that difficult then...

This is not really an argument worth having. We all need to see beyond YouTube as the supplier of our art and music.... 'it's what the kids use' is not an argument, the kids can get off their lazy asses and do some hunting of their own... that is how they will find the gold. When I was younger and discovering new music for myself, I didn't depend on corporate drip feeds, that's not 'discovering' music, that's allowing the corporate giants to let you 'discover' what they want you to discover.

Prince's music isn't on YouTube. Big deal. There are still thousands of second hand record/CD stores the world over that stock this stuff... god forbid we should have to leave the house to acquire something of worth....

If it's not worth leaving the house for, what worth is it?

Great points. Many people do seem more worried about Prince's legacy than he is, If if I were him I wouldn't be concerned with my legact al all. Firstly Prince will be making music for as longs as he wants and when he stops I can't see why he would be that interested in any legacy. What does your legacy do for you?

Youtube is not a way to make a great deal of money for artists and I do find it interesting that if, for example, an illegal downloading site put up lots of Prince videos etc they would be seen as wholly illegitimate and yet unoffical postings on Youtube as seen as wholly acceptable.

Regarding 'investing' in Prince. Firstly, there is a HUGE amount of stuf out there for free. Secondly, just buy The Gold Experience of Purple Rain or LoveSexy and if they like it then they can buy another album. It's not like buying a house.

You know, we are really spoiled today. It's so easy to get your hands on music right from your sofa. And, yeah, that includes Prince.

Back in the 80s, it actually took me a couple of years to track down a copy of the Let's Work remix and just a bootleg of Gotta Stop (Messin' About) - original copies were the Holy Grail back in the day. I still remember how much trouble I went to, to track down a copy of For You in the UK.

When I wanted to get into George Clinton, I used to have to get myself down to London and search high and low. Sometimes I'd get lucky and pick up something from Blue Bird records in Luton. It was damned frustrating, but kind of interesting, too.

The search for and the discovery of music is, in many ways, a thing of the past. With a bit of Google know-how, I can listen to pretty much anything I care to think of. But it all just leaves me a bit flat.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I think searching for it is half of the fun......I went to my "wrecka stow" the other day and looked thru the P catalog; "For You", "Parade" , "Dirty Mind", "94 East" and "G.B" were the copies I saw avail.....In the used section, there was "Musicology", "Diamond And Pearls" and TONS of copies of "Lotus Flower".......I think if "youngsters" want to get into P's music, they'll find it easy to get access to it..(Amazon, Ebay, parent's record collection, etc)

When I go post on a board I don't visit often, I care to quickly try and check whether my thread is a dead horse beating or not before I create it, particularly when my thread is about ranting or expressing a personal opinion. Way I see it, it's a matter of courtesy for the people who invest a lot of time in those communities. You don't just pop up in somebody's house and start ranting whenever you please wink

Yes he is too stupid stubborn to admit it. The number one reason why he is unpopular and can't sell shit anymore is that Google basicaly owns youth culture. You gotta play their game. The types of kids who would otherwise be Prince fans, have never freaking heard of him and lack of promotion on Youtube is probably the number one reason for this.

Someday, it will all be online. It will either take a change of heart from Prince and/or a giant payday for him.

YouTube doesn't generate any direct income for Prince. The income goes to YouTube and the advertisers. If I'm wrong, please tell me.

You can argue that he's getting indirect income in the form of more album sales generated by more exposure, and that YouTube is more or less "free advertising".

There are also programs out there to rip audio and video straight off of YouTube. It's not a secure site by any means. So that pirating is even less money in Prince's pocket. BUT, to play the game fairly, he has to offer his videos for download. Can't cry foul if you're not playing fair.

Too stubborn? How about Prince is a total dick for not allowing any of his classic videos on Youtube or Dailymotion!

I wish Prince would follow the example of Madonna & the late Michael Jackson by just being YouTube friendly for the sake of having an international fanbase that still have room for new fans that needs/wants to know their music history better.

I have to say that I actually admire Prince for the stance he takes against YouTube and other streaming sites. It's his music, why should he line the pockets of Google? Yes, there are a lot of young people out there who would become fans, but does he need to reach out to them by selling out his soul to a corporation? No, I know that some will argue that he has already done this through tidal but he has repeatedly said that he was happy with the terms and conditions.
At the end of the day, it's his music, his legacy, his choice! Enjoy what you have, don't moan about what you can't have.

It could be money. YouTube takes 45% of the ad revenue from the videos uploaded. (That's according to this article.) I'm not sure how much money Prince videos would bring in, but I don't see Prince parting with nearly half of it. Unless he continually updates a channel with new content, it won't bring in much. It's not like he's an up-and-coming artist trying to get his name known.

You are partly right and partly wrong. There is direct income from Youtube through adverts on the channel if you are a Youtube partner. Obviously it may not be huge amounts but it would be in the thousands per million views. Obviously you are also right that it is relatively easy for anyone to rip the audio/video straight from the site. Business wise Prince may well be focussing on what gives him the largest percentage. I would also say that Prince has a large number or revenue streams avilable to him if he desires, Concerts, Books, Paisley Park, Direct Cd sales, Direct Website Sales, Merchandise etc.

Appreciate the response! As a fan, I'm with the majority that want his stuff on YouTube. I just understand the reason(s) why he keeps fighting it.

Honestly, I would love the opportunity (as a collector) to pay for quality HD downloads. Maybe that's the compromise -- HD for purchase, SD for streaming/YouTube?

I actually think that's a realy great idea. I would be very happy to pay for any full HD Downloads that Prince creates. I am sure there is a very large amount of material unreleased. I'm not sure exactly how much would need a bit of work and how much is HD but that's a really good possible opportunity.

Yes he is.

Prince is his own worst enemy. He is tarnishing his legacy. The new generation know nothing about any of his classics, videos, music and why he is called a legend. He is not doing anything to sustain his legacy and yes his arrogance will continue to hurt him if he keeps this up.

Legacy is beyond an artist's control. Legacy is what exists once the artist is gone and the body of works is complete. Prince wishes to build toward his legacy in the way that an artist can, by collecting resources to continue his creative works while living a reasonably comfortable lifestyle. Youtube will not pay him enough. He is negotiating with the record company that has the ability to offer him much better recompensation. He probably cares less about his popularity of today--he has already experienced that brand of success in life. I think that he is betting on coming to an agreement toward a pay rate that will be more equitable for his present-day A&R/artist partnership. I imagine that Prince is a bit less arrogant than people around here believe. There is a business side to all of this gifting of song to the public, and Prince is handling his business through the means available to him. I don't feel that Prince is going to self-destruct. He has made it through a pretty great part of a long career with more to come if he sees his way through the present dealings.

>

Besides, Warner Brothers will most certainly see that his name lives on in perpetuity if they have any ounce of influence in the matter! lol

Some of his fans are delusional , please, if you like Prince and you live for example in South America you should travel to US and buy his used cd's in some record store and if you don't you are lazy... really? wacky The real thing is his music isn't available to his fans worldwide. I had to buy an import version of HnR Phase 2 and it was very expensive. Watch some rude member say 'If you really love PRINCE you should work extra time to buy his music imported.
