Prince Goes Shopping In Melbourne

I've been meaning to share this quick story with orgers but haven't got around to it. When Prince was in Melbourne Australia last month he took a private little shopping expedition that was pretty modest. In Australia we have a chain of music and electronics stores called JB Hi-Fi. At 'JB' you can buy CDs, vinyl records, DVDs, games, hi-fi audio equipment, mobile phones, computers, headphones, cameras and such... I'm not really sure what the US equivalent would be?

There's a store in the heart of Melbourne city on Bourke St where a friend of mine happens to be a manager. Her work colleague received a call to say Prince would like to visit and do some shopping for 30mins after the store had closed. The store closed at 9pm and sure enough, at 9.15pm Prince arrived with one minder and with little fanfare began silently browsing the store. There was only three staff members present (including my friend) and everybody politely made themselves look busy all the while wondering what in the hell was he going to buy?!

So Prince's haul was this:

One power board, an iPhone charger, a CD copy of 'Bitches Brew' by Miles Davis, and a DVD copy of 'An American In Paris' the 1951 Gene Kelly movie... ha, cute!

It's especially funny and cool that Prince went and bought these things himself. He could have got someone to buy this stuff for him. Maybe he had cabin fever cooped up in long haul flights and hotel rooms and just needed to get out? Also, Prince obviously was having some travelers frustration charging his devices in Australia! The power board was hilarious.

Btw, my friend has no interest in Prince and couldn't have been any less star struck at this small interaction with Mr. Nelson. I on the other hand can't forgive her for not giving me a heads up on this turn of events, maybe an opportunity to meet the man himself. But she's professional like that, she knew it best to keep me away!

I believe they are called power strips in North America--don't know the European name. You plug multiple electrical items in them and then plug it into the wall.

Wow, you're right! Prince does have a song of the same name, I didn't even make the connection! My manager friend who is a non-fan would have no idea about this, she simply observed Prince's purchases. I wonder what his fascination with that movie is?

How nice of JB Hi-Fi to stay open extra time to accomodate Prince's lil' purchases! I think a similar-type store in the States would be Best Buy, originally a Minnesota company whose headquarters is in the Minneapolis suburb of Richfield! Back in the day you could be sure to find his independent albums there--Emancipation, Crystal Ball, Newpower Soul--memories. cloud9

Did your friend save Prince from a screaming fan assault? lol

I watched the trailer. There's music. There's singing and dancing. There's a guy. There's a gal. I think the guy gets the gal. That's Prince.
What?
