Bad or underpar vocal performances on Prince studio tracks.

So I just started a thread talking about Extraloveable 80's version, saying how I felt like this was one of his weakest studio recorded vocal performances and it got me thinking, Prince is such a master of his craft and there are so many incredible vocals throughout his canon of work, but can you think of any other examples of studio tracks (released or unreleased) where Prince doesn't deliver the goods vocally?

At the end of the day, as insanely and scarily talented as the little dude is, he's still only human. I've been studying vocal lessons for a while now and am starting to inadvertantly become more critical of other singers performances and I thought this thread could make for an interesting critical analysis.

Prince was truly dirty, nasty and explicit in his lyrics... nod

Like the Bloodhound Gang sings in "The Bad Touch":

Quote: "Sweat baby sweat baby sex is a Texas drought,
Me and you do the kind of stuff that only Prince would sing about"

Sying Princes vocals are weak on Extra Loveable is nothing more than just your opinion.

to me his vocals are great on that song it relates to the subject and tension of the song.

Whenever prince phlem screaches the word "scream" (hard rawk lova, daisy chain) it ruins the song

I'll bite...

Whenever Prince does some type of pseudo orgasmic babble, it really weirds me out and distracts from what could have been a perfect performance. I love his sexually charged performances but the minute I hear something resembling the ending of "Do Me Baby", its game over. eek

.

even if a person thinks the vocals on that song are bad it doesnt matter since it wasnt released. it really makes no sense to get critical of a performance on an unreleased song since its impossible to know if that part of it would have been re done or released as is.

Prince has many great vocal performances. His falsetto is a great instrument. His natural range vocals aren't as strong as many R&B singers, but he's more adventurous than most which completely makes up for any faults in power. His screams in particular are awesome.

Now to answer the question, some weak vocals are:

Most of For You (except the title track, Crazy You, and Soft & Wet)
Much of Prince
Much of Dirty Mind (even though the album is great)
Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do
Planet Earth, All the Midnights in the World
The ballads on MPLSound
Resolution
Wow, Fixurlifeup, Screwdriver, FunknRoll

That's a 20 year run of great vocals from Controversy to The Vault, with some stumbles before & after.

Interesting choices.

I think Screwdriver was meant to be raggedy and punkish.

What is it you don't like about his vocals on Wherever U Go Whatever U Do?

I'd be curious to hear more in-depth as to why you think that of these?

^^^ I think it's a pretty obvious observation of his first three albums to be honest. Prince didn't really begin to find his voice until after Dirty Mind imo.

1st, "Tick Tick Bang".

Yes, I know this song comes up everytime I have to list some bad P achievement, but it's not my fault it is a complete disaster.

And 2nd, "My Name Is Prince".

A bland imitation-joke of MJ vocal style that fully supports the poverty of the track itself.

Maybe they are so bad because P wanted to do them "nicely bad", but to me they are BAD and nothing other.

This song happened right after Michael Jackson started calling himself "King of Pop".

The second half of the song (the crescendo) seems me like he needs a as like in Adore era, but he hasn't.

Vocals on both of those songs sound childlike, in a bad way. WUGOWUD vocals are just too "wimpy" and light. There was a Lenny Kravitz song at that time with a similar chord progression but stronger vocals, and it was much more effective and became a bit of a hit.

Sxrewdriver sounds like he has some effect on his voice to make him sound like a teenager. I like the lyrics of the verses, but they childlike singing is distracting. There's one verse where his more natural voice comes through (the one with the "never lies" lyric).

Interestingly enough, before you even posted your reply I took another listen to WUGWUD and for the first time just paid attention to the vocals and I thought the same thing about them being a bit twee and wimpy.

Still really love the song though.

Like MattyJam said Prince didn't really "find his voice" until Controversy. Do Me Baby is waaaay stronger vocally than any of the ballads on the first 3 albums, for example, and it laid the groundwork for many of Prince's other great ballads.

I'm Yours is arguably the most egregious example of weak vocals on For You. The first verse is like a falsetto mumble that completely undermines the power of the music. Even a *relatively* strong vocal performance like Just As Long As We're Together has no "bite." The vocals kind of plod along with an uninspired lack of umph.
