The phases idea is actually really cool, with phase 1 being from 2014-15, phase 2 mostly being from 2011-13, phase 3 could be 2007-10 (welcome 2 america album, stuff like We Live To Get Funky etc), or just go way back and have phases that focus on Lovesexy, Purple Rain etc...

I guess Phase III will be out around March.

Logic indicates all 5 records wxill cover 2011-2016 despite the covers, since Ruff Enuff and Free Urself seem confirmed for Phase Three.

Not long ago he said that Free Urself and Ruff Enuff is on the same album so I think Phase 3 will contain mostly newer songs

I was just about to say that. I wonder if Free Urself may even be the name of the next album. It's nothing conclusive but he seemed to have a bit of a theme starting with the single and t-shirts/merchandise

Having only 2 phases would be conceptually absurd given how unrelated both records are. They are not twin albums like TCI and TS or 3121 and M&H for example. My guess is there will be 5 phases as indicated by the covers on Tidal. However with Prince u never know...

I think that's Milk and Honey, the Tamar album. But I can't figure out TCI or TS and it's annoying me because I know it's something simple... smile

anyway, back to PHASE 3:

Free Urself
If Eye Could Get Ur Attention

Rough Enough

they all sound pretty much like they could go together on an album, i guess.

kinda hoping for a bit more grit in the funk though, on the other tracks.

and i know we already have this track, but i would still like to see "ain't gonna miss u when u're gone"
included on an album, just like "rnr love affair" and "screwdriver" were.

personally i was really hoping for a cd quality version of "same page, different book" but i guess that
is off the table for now since prince said Phase 2 was probably the last album (for now?) that shelby
is on.

I have high hopes phase IV or V will be drum machine based electrofunk with that one (a masterpiece IMHO, it sounds like a SOTT outtake!), Boyfriend and more stuff like that. Noticed how there's not a single drum machine on Phase II?

Why do some people want an album full of tracks they already own? Just create a playlist.

Because a playlist wouldn't be the artist's own vision. I can indeed create a playlist of "orphan" songs but the sequencing would be totally arbitrary. I like the idea that an album is a cohesive ensemble of songs: regardless of the fact that they may or not have been composed with a specific project in mind, in the end I get a storytelling according to Prince's vision. It may or may not work but at least I get the artist's vision. I for example do not believe Planet Earth or AOA work as ensembles but at least it's P's choice to sequence those tracks together. On the other hand I believe Crystal Ball (98) is an incrediblly cohesive and well sequenced 30 tracks "story", despite being a compilation of tracks that were not originally conceived to be put together.

I know I'm a bit of a purist in that sense but I feel it's not my place to create or alter Prince (or any other artist) albums. Either I have them and I can appreciate them or criticize them as such or I don't.

And I know I may be old school but I almost always listen to full albums because I want to be taken through a journey by an artist. I have actually rediscovered some songs thanks to Phase One and Two that I probably wouldn't have paid much attention to originally (Fallinlove2nite or Groovy Potential for example), or that would have loved for 2 months then forgotten (Screwdriver for example). I'm glad those songs are now part of an ensemble.

Because of all of the above, I never skip tracks when listening to an album, and more than often this has allowed songs (again by Prince or others) to grow on me, and for me to realize certain songs were much better works than I would have thought on a first listen. A recent example is Kimbra's last album: at first I fell in love with one third of the tracks but thought the rest was forgettable. But after a dozen listens I realized the whole thing was totally brilliant. It doesn't work with every album I listen to but that's how I got to fall in love with all my darlings, including Prince's records.
