The Greatest Romance... is really pretty damned good.

This is a pretty solid ballad. Has different parts, the melodys are really tight. It is commercial but very smooth for the ear. I like it bunches.

Forgive us Prince. Undisputed, you can keep that trash.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

I loved to sing it back then when I still knew how to sing. I actually enjoyed singing it alongside listening to it more than listening to it per se. Great track if only for that (but wrong choice of a lead single in the context of 1999) biggrin

TGR is crap, to me. Never liked it. However, if I'm playing a lot of Prince songs and it comes on, I perk up like 'WOW! What's that?'. I think it's one of those songs that once you are already playing Prince and listening to weird shit anyway, after awhile, it sounds better to your ears than it really is.

I love this song and it's massively underrated. I hate how critically and commercially unsuccessful it was/is.

And despite my love for the Arabian undertones of the original, I REALLY love the Jason Neveans(?) remix. Too catchy cool

Great track, real slick ultra cool r'n'b. One of those great examples of Prince locking himself in the studio for a day and coming out with an absolute classic. Started while he was back in america in autumn 98, when most of the Rave album was initially tracked. Rave is quite unique in terms of Prince albums because you've got actually quite a lengthy process of overdubbing and adding guests, pretty much a whole year.

Stuff like So Far So Pleased were actually from mid 98, he was working on tracks like that, Baby Knows, Vavoom alongside New power soul, with what was shaping up to be this really uptempo, happy rock album. So Far So Pleased is a great track, because its so up beat, you cant help but smile at that intro, and some nice drum n bass work from Kirk and Rhonda, they're rock solid on it. I'm not sure when Gwens vocals were added, obviously as 99 closed in, he decided to put together a fall proof commercial album with a lot of guests, huge promo etc.

Vavoom ended up coming out much later on and it got lost amongst the npgmc years, but go put it on through your biggest bassiest speakers and it's just... huge. Such bass!

Rave in general is fantastic. People here write it off. It deserves reassessment. Beer is good.

Love the song. It definitely grows, its musical appeal and hook are not immediate.
On another note, I've always been puzzled by the title - particularly the "sold" part. And the cd single art had stacks of gold coins.
Is this supposed to be cynical? Are we being "sold" the idea of a great romance, but really there's something else going on? Could it be about his relationship with Mayte, which was over by that point?

There's a dark undercurrent to some of the lyrics:
"this is where you end/and you and I begin..."
"Your body was designed to respond to mine/in spite if your desire to mold me..."

I'm not arguing a point or interpretation here, just want to initiate discussion of the lyrics. They puzzle me!
Any thoughts? Please share. Thanks.
