"Desire"the song

I've been listening to two different versions of this song all day.

it's raining and it's the perfect soundtrack.

anyone else love this unreleased gem?

along with "neon rendezvous"it's my current fav outtake.

peace purple people!

When you say two versions, do you include the one by The Family? I only know one outtake. And I am with you, one of my favourites by far.

no,they're both by Prince.

one is spare instrumentation, like a ballad, the other is fleshed out.

the fleshed out one is from Royal Jewels.

the ballad I have on a onedrive.

There is the Family album rel (1)

the Prince & the Revolution version with a Purple Rain feel (guitar solo) (2)

the studio cut That I believe is the Revolution with Prince St Paul & Susannah on lead, a bit more upbeat Eric on sax(3) don't know who else from the Family is there

So long have we known each other (So long have we known each other)
So little do we know (Little do we know)
Sometimes I feel like strangers (Sometimes I feel like strangers)
The real us we seldom do show (Seldom do show)

CHORUS:
Desire, it covers our faces
It happens in curious places
Your body, it covers my tower
Ecstasy is ours

I dream of a physical evening (Dream of a physical evening {x3})
I long 4 a night within U
U're saving your love 4 some soldier (Some soldier {x3})
Who'd much rather die than stay by your side
If U only knew

CHORUS

A ghost from your past
Prevents us from knowing the pleasures of love
What must I do 2 convince U
Isn't the expression on my complexion enough?
(Ecstasy)

Don't tell me we have conflicting emotions
It's written all over your face
Come my love, cover my tower
Ecstasy is ours

So long have we known each other (So long have we known each other)
So little do we know
Let me show U

The Family (Front Cover)

Absolutely love that song. Some of Prince's best writing, imo. Really wish a better quality version was available of it. I'd take all of The Family Prince demos in great quality though, honestly. biggrin

الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

Listening through what I have

1. Purple Rush Vol. 7 Disc 4

5:20 min

starts out with a muted drum machine beat, moracas, then organic drums sax, synth and keyboards

Prince on lead vocals. other backing vocals

the song rides out more upbeat

2. the Family album version 5:04 min very similar to #1 but not as upbeat, not as much active drumming

3. Purple Rush 3

Prince & the Revolution

much more guitar/strings electric guitar solo followed by Eric Leeds sax solo

instructions on parts
I don't know if Susannah/St Paul on this

Love this track!

When Prince said Another Love by Alice Smith reminded him of some of the work he did with the Revolution back in the day, I felt like he was referring to Desire.

"That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

Still think the final version is the one.

Taking out the snare was a good choice, and that shaker/cabasa/rattlesnake/whatever it is going on is just perfect. I like the St Paul performances, when I first heard the outtakes, I thought they were a bit overdone.

St. Paul's vocal limitations actually gives the whole album a distanciation. Prince has a tendency to inhabit his songs, and that's what I like about his side projects, is that it lets other personalities give different expressions to the songs, other than Prince's.
And the songs still work, and sometimes better.

The fade-out / fade-in / fade-out coda is sublime. The short bridge before the solo too.
The whole thing always makes me think of ocean waves gently crashing.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

It's on the boot Purple Rush 3 disc 4 with the Revolution

this rehearsal has much more strings with the Revolution

but the Leeds solo on the Fam. version kills it imo

I absolutely agree with you.

I like the outtake P's version, but the released Family version is a bliss trip.

And "Desire" is in my Top 5 of P's related project tracks.

As far as I know technically this is not a "Prince & The Revolution" rehearsal but a proper "The Family" rehearsal.

This track and "Mutiny" from PR Vol.3 are borrowed from the Moonraker CD "Family Business" containing the entire rehearsal (with also a rendition of the "Pink Panther Theme" lol).

Correct me if I'm wrong. I would be happy to know that another version of the song exist.

The uptempo mix with the long solo by Eric is the ONE! It's rarely mentioned, but that's in my top 10 studio cuts that I've always wished a better quality copy would surface.
Keep your headphones on.
