1983, the year of nothing?

What did Prince release in -83 (associates included)? I know this is after his huge breakthrough with 1999 and just before his icon status with Purple Rain. But did he just write and begin to plan the PR album? Or did he do other things during this year? Very mystical year for me.

Horny Toad, Irresistable Bitch and the extended Drive me Wild look to be his only new releases that year? Wasn't he touring 1999 for the first half and writing/recording/filming Purple Rain the second half?

Can we just agree that this man was lazy in '83 by doing nothing except touring, preparing the purple rain movie, the pr lp, the time lp, the appolonia lp, and rehearsing for the pr tour ?

If touring, making a movie and writing a ton of music is "nothing" then we could all stand to have a year or two of "nothing" lol lol lol

I prefer to think of it as the year of electric intercourse.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

That input in "Stand Back" seems like a big deal for 1983. Thank you all. And I mean "nothing", like he didn't release any albums. But he still managed to pull out ten albums in ten years if I'm inclined to put The Black Album as an official release, and I will. Great job Prince. Again.

Didn't he work on a follow up to 1999 and not finish/ release it though? I know it's not much to go on but there was a reference in the Rolling Stone interview from '85 where he commments to the interviewer about it.

I recall hearing a rumor about a "lost 1983 album" but I don't think it really exists.Sure,Prince recorded a ton of songs during 1983 but I can't imagine that he was seriously planning to release an album in 1983.

Right, it does read like he is saying he has the follow up to 1999 though lol

here is where people get that from

1985 interview

I think that's the problem with the music industry today. When a person does get a hit, they try to do it again the same way. I don't think I've ever done that. I write all the time and cut all the time. I want to show you the archives, where all my old stuff is. There's tons of music I've recorded there. I have the follow-up album to 1999. I could put it all together and play it for you, and you would go "Yeah!" And I could put it out, and it would probably sell what 1999 did. But I always try to do something different and conquer new ground.

I don't think he made anything after 1999 was done to compile a follow up to 1999. It was clear they were going into music for the Purple Rain and filming a movie

Except it's written in plain English that Prince would have to "put it all together", i.e. what he meant was just that he had enough material to assemble a 1983 album, but he had not assembled it. I think he said something similar in 1985 or 86 about the fact that he could have released PR2 instead of ATWAID and people started hallucinating in a similar manner about a possible album configuration that would have contained mpls sound outtakes from 1984.

I have a book (Alex Hahn ?), but no access to it recently, where all recordings (not the releases) by Prince are listed in chronological order by year, released or not. The list was huge and the output / year in 1983 was big. ..I think..many songs released later. ..I have no proof of that
