I've always thought these three songs were one of many career highlights.
"If that dont work....YEAH WHAT?"
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Always loved it. Way back in the day I got a bootleg with these 3 followed by Databank and I was blown away.

It's a flat early 90's PP sound (apparently Levi did everything on it, though TC recently hinted that P may have been secretely involved in the recording as well) and TC raps the lyrics. Somehow it works well in the context of the album, and echoes the lyrics of several other songs.

I think Data Bank was also from that set of sessions?

Hopefully one day all this'll be included in an official vault material album.

Listening to them now and I almost forgot how great they sound together.

It's on the second disc of the Dream Factory version I have, and Databank is the track before them, and Big tall Wall after. Big fun.

One of the great treasured and forever linked sequence of tracks as a Prince fan. Love the arrangements and energy of all of these more than the released versions. Heard it first in 1988 ('89?) on a vinyl bootleg.

* Girl O' My Dreams

While specific recording dates for the initial version of the song are not known, the song was originally recorded in 1982 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA. The track was re-recorded on 18 June, 1986 at the Crosstown Circle Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA (the day after Data Bank, Can't Stop This Feeling I Got and We Can Funk).

Here we go

2

1 2 3

I want a woman like Marilyn Monroe
The kind of woman that'd never say no
The kind of woman that'd make U scream
That's the girl o' my dreams!

I want a woman that'll treat me right
Give me good lovin' all through the night
Take her on a date, she's my machine
That's the girl o' my dreams

Oh, the girl o' my dreams
Oh, listen people, that's the girl o' my dreams

I want a woman like Lauren Bacall
Old and wrinkled but knows it all
Got all the little tricks that'll make me cream
That's the girl o' my dreams

I want a woman that'll wash my hair
Even wash my underwear
Always smilin', never mean
That's the girl o' my dreams

CHORUS

I would say that U're a chauvinist

No, I just got a lot of things that are on my list!

Yeah, if she couldn't hang, would U give her the fist?

No man, I'd sit her right down and give her a little kiss!

Oh, I need a woman like Lena Horne
Knowed she was funky since the day she was born
Lena's mama say Doc, is it a girl?
Doc say "And how!"
Lena smiled, slapped the doctor and said
Sucker I'm runnin' things now!

Oh, the girl o' my dreams
Oh, listen people, that's the girl o' my dreams

* Can't Stop This Feeling I Got

Initial tracking took place in Spring-Summer 1982 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA, along with several other tracks that would re-appear over the next several years. The track was re-recorded on 17 June, 1986 at the Crosstown Circle Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA (in sequence after Data Bank and before We Can Funk, the day before recording Girl O' My Dreams).

I can't stop this feeling I got
I feel it right down to my toes
I can't stop this feeling I got
My body got to have it you know
I can't stop this feeling I got
It's running all down my legs
I can't stop this feeling I got
Why U wanna make me beg?

Can't stop this feeling I got, can't stop this feeling I got
I can't stop this feeling I got, can't stop this feeling I got

Can't stop this feeling I got, can't stop this feeling I got
I can't stop this feeling I got, can't stop this feeling I got

I can't stop this feeling I got
You know I can't sleep at night
I can't stop, you know I love it a lot,
I never want U outta my sight
I can't stop this feeling I got
I get to shaking all in my shoes
I can't stop this feeling I got
The doctor say there's nothing that he can do

Can't stop this feeling I got, can't stop this feeling I got
I can't stop this feeling I got, can't stop this feeling I got

Can't stop this feeling I got, can't stop this feeling I got
I can't stop this feeling I got, can't stop this feeling I got

I can't stop, this feeling I got

My body, I want U I want U

I can't stop, this feeling I got

Baby baby baby

chorus

And if that don't work
Yeah, what?

* We Can Funk

Initial tracking for Prince's original solo version took place on 31 December, 1983 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, as We Can Fuck (the day after Erotic City and She's Always In My Hair), with additional work the following day, 1 January, 1984. Prince later toned down the title and lyrics of the song, and re-recorded the track on 17 June, 1986 at the Crosstown Circle Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA (in sequence after Data Bank and Can't Stop This Feeling I Got, the day before recording Girl O' My Dreams). The 1983 recording was returned to and updated in 1989 at Paisley Park Studios

I could tell you stories 'til you get tired.
I could play with your mind.
But you'd probably say that I was a liar
So I won't waste your time

I'm scared 'cause though we just met there's this energy between us,
Let's just go somewhere, we can funk

I could say I'm sorry all of my life
But that wouldn't be true

I only say -__ the things that I do
Because I'm not U

I'm scared, cause if I don't kiss U
I'm gonna go mad
Let's just go somewhere, we can funk

We Can Funk

I could teach U things about your pumping body baby

Things U never heard

oohhh the Kamasutra I could rewrite it

with half as many words

...come blow your horn

We Can Funk

We Can Funk

I'm scared 'cause though we just met there's this energy between us,
Let's just go somewhere, we can funk

Come on baby

We Can Funk

We Can Funk

Do U wanna funk with me?

We Can Funk

* Data Bank

Initial tracking took place on 17 June, 1986 at the Crosstown Circle Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA (in sequence before Can't Stop This Feeling I Got and We Can Funk, the day before Girl O' My Dreams). The track was re-recorded with Morris Day on lead vocals in Summer, 1989, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, when Prince and Morris Day worked on the projected fourth album by The Time, Corporate World, which later morphed into Pandemonium.

..look here mama, umm
I'm feelin' like I, umm
I, umm, kinda want them numbers

So, umm, I don't know
Could I ... could I call U sometime?
Ooh, ooh!
Data bank
I'm feelin' like I wanna put U in my data bank
If U got the love, I got the time (Data bank)

Just give me your phone number, I'll drop a dime on ya (Data bank)
Think I won't?
Hurt me!
On the phone, I may be shy (Data bank)
I don't know, U wanna ... U wanna go on a picnic or somethin'?
But in living color, I'm a real neat guy (Data bank)
Oh!
When the other brothers tell U they are better

U better look real close, they might be a bedwetter
Hey!
Dig this...
6 feet tall, skinny legs and all

All they really know is basketball
Then I say, give me that phone number
Mama, we can pop all night (doo waa)

I might be small, but so is dynamite
Hey!
Ouch! (doo waa, doo waa)
And then I say...

Hey U, am I gettin' through?
Ha, ha, oww!
Data bank

I'm feelin' like I wanna put U in my data bank
Data bank [x2]
Ooh! (doo waa, doo waa)
School's in
The teacher got a guitar

If U didn't come 2 turn it out
Might as well get yo ass in your car
And get on down the road

Get on down the road, yeah
["Data bank" repeats in BG 'til end]
Keep goin', right there, don't...
See if ... see if the trumpet work
Does it work?
Well, come on
Play!

Yeeaahh!
I'm feelin' like I wanna put U in my data bank
Brass!
Oww!
Yeah!
Can... can U play it again?

Oww!
Ow Ow Oww!
Listen...
School's in
The teacher got a saxophone
If U didn't come 2 turn it out
U might as well leave it alone

Eric.. Leeds, that is
Kid, Movie Star
Funky, nasty
Drives an ugly car
Hold up, hold up
Mark, come on

U're in the wrong key cousin
No, no, wait
Oww!

I'm feelin' like I wanna put U in my data bank

What happened 2 that melody we had?
What if...
We just gonna groove?
Fine
We just gonna groove or what?

Well, somebody got 2 solo or somethin'
Hmm, I don't know
12 inch
Think it ain't?
Mark
School's in

The teacher got a funky bass
If U didn't come 2 turn it out
Get your frail ass out my face

I'm feelin' like I wanna put U in my data bank [x2]
I didn't ... I didn't call the horns
I didn't call the horns

Why y'all got 2 play 'em?
It's cool, OK, alright, Lisa
I don't wanna hear no horns, I just wanna hear Lisa

Oh, oh, that's dog, that's dog
I didn't call that either
OK, I quit
No, I'm quittin'
Lisa, stop!

OK, wait a minute

See, I know, yeah OK (doo waa, doo waa)

Yep. I'm glad I didn't know back in 89-90 or so, that 25 years would pass and we'd still not have an official release. I'm tired of Prince's excuses.

Does anyone know the right speed for We Can Funk?
Some are really slowed down
I prefer the fast Royal Jewels speed.

The Box of Chocolate version is the real deal (the 2009 boot, not its historical ancestor from the 80's)

This is pretty funny. We all got the same damn bootleg or something! I got mine in 1990. It, also, had classic vault tracks like Old Friends 4 Sale, Witness 4 the Prosecution, and Can I Play With U.

cool

Mine was a vinyl record called "Chocolate Box". It also had "Joy in Repitition" two years before it was released. With the lone drum intro. It had "Moviestar" which segued into "A Place in Heaven" with the girl going with Prince back to his "crib" to listen to an environmental record, but falling asleep and snoring.

I want to say that I remember the environmental record bit but it's been so long since I listened to my boot. I can't remember. The "A Place In Heaven" boot I didn't hear until the 2000's, probably 2009/2010. We're a funny lot us Prince fans, trying to track down every damn thing he did.

That's the one. The definitive "Joy In Repetition" has the delayed Linn tom, which sets the mood perfectly. It's also mixed differently, I don't think the quality of the copy is to blame, it's reaaly giving more way to the guitars, and it's much more powerful than the clean version of GB.

Makes me wonder about the first "Moonbeam Levels".
It's distorted as hell and hisses like crazy, but the speed is maybe Prince playing with the varispeed of the tape player afterwards, just to test what the final tempo should be.
It also seems to be a different mix, despite the poor quality, it sounds like the balance is not exactly the same. But the comparison with the pristine version that surfaced last year is difficult.

It's the same wih "We Can Funk". The dirty, lush and dark atmosphere of the bootleg is irreplaceable. Same with "Do Yourself A Favour", I'm not eager to hear a pristine studio version, I like the fact that you hear this material was clandestine.
That made us feel like treasure hunters.

Yes, but the vocals seem a little drowned in the mix, just a little low compared to the album version.
