the sound of controversy

Do you think the Controversy album has more in common with Dirty Mind or 1999 in terms of overall sound, attitude, style, themes and composition? I remember that there was a cassette with DM on one side and Controversy on the other which suggests that the albums seem to fit together. However, although I love the singles Controversy, Sexuality and Do me, Baby, IMO Controversy is a weaker, watered-down version of both Dirty Mind and 1999 in terms of its treatement of sex, politics and relationships. It seems a little too contrived, as if he set out to be controversial rather than expressing genuinely heart-felt views.

With Dirty Mind, i consider it had made a good double album, first part with the less produced songs and the second part a more produced songs.

somehow the songs on dirty mind are demo recordings, yet the actual songs are more worked out

(at least they feel more complete) than the ones on controversy which are finished productions yet

feel more skeletal in places. if that makes sense at all lol

Great analysis and observations. Prince was listening to the critics (good/bad) of Dirty Mind, which created a reactionary album that did not have the organic brilliance of Dirty Mind, although it had its moments. I used to think that he fleshed out ideas from DM on Controversy, but it's more of a bridge to the masterpiece that is 1999.

I love dirty mind, but controversy to me is a much better album.

I think Controversy is the album where Prince truly found his Sound.

The song Controversy is as good as anything on dirty mind
Do me baby is probably his best slow jam ever.
Lets work was his funkiest song at that point.

This album was the logical upgrade from dirty mind and built the foundation
for the masterpiece work of 1999...

SIDENOTE: DIRTYMIND/CONTROVERSY/1999/PURPLERAIN is the greatest four album
stretch of his career. Truly magnificent work

I say Dirty Mind, from the style(clothing) the New Wave rawness (it definately had a feeling of being a bridge between Dirty Mind & 1999) but to me the whole vibe is more like Dirty Mind.

Dirty Mind is a timeless masterpiece. one of the few Prince albums I can play from start to finish without skipping. Controversey is good but not a masterpiece. Jack U Off was a bad song choice
