1999 vs. Lovesexy

Which album is better in your opinion? In terms of sound two very different albums, for me 1999 is a much better album and more mature work.Better song writing, better execution of ideas not to mention that 1999 is analog synth and linn drum fiest much warmer in sound than the sterile roland d50 of LoveSexy. And Lovesexy is filled with songs not so good and very over produced.

These are difficult albums to compare because they come from a different place. Personally I prefer 1999, but I can't say it's better than Lovesexy. I don't think one contains better songwriting than the other - because I feel they are equal in that category. 1999 is that "vintage" Prince sound and look which I love. He was young and looking to push the envelope with 1999. He made Lovesexy after conquering the world, so to speak and (I think) is more of a personal statement than 1999. Lovesexy is a very unique album I really enjoy the sound but I simple prefer 1999. Both are amazing albums though.

1999.

Just listening to it. I'm not sure if it's the best example of "analog warmth" though. I always associate the electronics used in that era more with the feeling that you get when you walk on the town on a chilly late November night, or something like that . The Linndrum was definitely digital and the Oberheim polysynths already had a sound that was somewhere between analog and digital (probably due to all the ICs inside).

Love LvSx too.

Yes linn is digital but nothing digital about the Obies 100% analog

Yes, but in no way constructed according to the same ideals associated with older analog synths. They already have much of the same sonic quality that the DCO synths that soon followed them had.

I don't think that any Prince album really sounds "warm" in the sense analog synth purists like things to sound. Maybe the first two albums do, but he always went for a pretty "biting" overall sound.

Dont know man dco are digitaly controlled oscilators but the sound creation is purčey analog.when and synths on 1999 are vco.Littče Red Corvette intro is Prince at his warmest creamiest synth sound.

The THREE GREATS:

PURPLE RAIN

SIGN O' THE TIMES

1999

...

Parade & Lovesexy are genius as well but the TOP 3 are the one's listed above IMO

Adorecream

1999 is for me, but Lovesexy comes close. Lovesexy is aural perfection and has a cool spiritual and psychosexual sound, but 1999 is a funk and fuck masterpiece. Sexy creamy songs and great Linn drums, guitars and that hunger that characterises all the pre Purple Rain stuff.

.

In 1982 Prince was on fire and entering his strongest period with that album and What Time is it and of course even Vanity 6, whereas by 1988 Lovesexy was the book end to a great period and it was the beginning of the long decline (Although interspersed with some highs). Lovesexy was the last album where the Quality Control squad still had a job. As much as I love Lovesexy, it lacks the sonic diversity of 1999 and even more so of Sign o the Times.

.

On my list, Lovesexy is my 4th favourite, so its real close, 1999 is my 2nd. My favourite is Sign and album #3 is Parade, Purple Rain fills out that Top 5.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Strange you should want comparison on this, for me personally, because I was pondering something along the same lines recently.

LoveSexy may very well be the last 'GOOD' album before what I percieve as the 'Great Garbage Release' by Prince.

LoveSexy is unique, artistic, mostly pleasing, BUT I find it to be the first album with throw away tracks.

When 2 R in Love

Dance On

Glam Slam

and almost.... Alphabet Street

It is also the first land mark for his albums with WEAK first tracks

EYE NO

Compared to 1999, and albums back to 'For You', and forward to 'SOTT', I find no throw away tracks and the first tracks all strong.

The only song I find remotely close to being a throw away on 1999 is Automatic, and that is simply because the damn thing just won't end.

1999 the song? I dare you to find many opening tracks as strong, it defines the theme of the music and the significance of the album's idea... to party hard before you die.

So, definately, 1999 is the winner.

We are all so full of doody here

1999 is a GREAT album!!! Classic, chocked full of great music/songs.

Lovesexy showed a completely different side, musically and lyrically. He grew up by '88 and it showed. I love both albums, but if I was forced to choose which I would take on a desert island...I'd pick Lovesexy.

1999 by a landslide for me: 'All the Critics...', 'Something in the Water', 'DMSR' and 'Lady Cab Driver'. Awesomeness.

1999 for me, easily. Linndrum plus lots of analog synths = sonic heaven. Add some slap bass and funky rhythm guitar and it gets even better: Minneapolis funk!
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
