Do you think Prince was a better guitar player when he was young?

In one recent interview Prince said that he is ashamed how bad he played when he was younger. So do you think Prince is better now on guitar?.to me it sounds like there was more passion and melodic content in his playing when he was younger.

He has become a master at the guitar, but I also love his early playing. "Head" live is delicious. He didn't start the crazy focus on guitar until he was dogged by Rolling Stone's crappy list.

Prince can make you scream with his guitar work...so no, he just got better with age, imo.

I mean, Prince is the artist who if he want can make a tons of guitar jamming tunes...but then we'll have some Jimi Hendrix 2, Eric Clapton, Buckethead or something similar.

Wow,NO. He himself says he's only gotten better with age. But of course people people won't believe even this from the man himself. Even if unintended, this is another example of how nostalgia makes everything better

he's obviously gotten better, but i do miss certain tones or quirky stylings of the old prince,

but that's not just on guitar, that's on everything biggrin

i wish he'd dust off the cloud guitar again for a track or two. the tone of the guitar on the
diamonds and pearls album is so creamy smile

been hoping it would pop up again, since he's revisited old synth and linn drum sounds,
but alas, no luck yet.

I am not a guitar player or musician, so I can only go by what I hear and like, and while he may be technically better than before, I do miss a certain sound he used to have.

Technique and skills have never been important to me as a listener. I could listen to his Eden Prairie rehearsals from the mid 80s for days, and sometimes I do.

-

-

I don´t know if I would want to listen to his newer rehearsals for days . One reason is because he plays many cover songs instead of his own songs, and the second reason is because the sound is more sterile than before and the way he plays his older songs is different , too, and the third reason is that I really miss the Hohner and the Cloud guitar.

-

-

I´ve always liked Prince´s strong sense of individuality and freedom, and the Cloud and Hohner had become his trademark guitars with a distinct sound. His new guitars and their sound is, in my opinion, not comparable to what he used to do and what he used to play.

In my opinion, the change started when he started using a whammy bar.

So is his guitar playing better these days? Maybe. I can´t tell.

But I´ve never had any complaints in the past, what he did then sounded perfect enough to my ears.

I do hear a difference of course between the Dirty Mind tour and his skills then compared to what he did a few years later starting in 1982-83.

But anything he did starting in 1982-83 sounds perfect to me, guitarwise. Up until two decades later maybe.

He has quite clearly got better over the years. Not surprising really - he continues to hone his craft, and has been playing guitar live much more since 2002.

He's gotten better with age, but go back and listen to I'm Yours and Bambi. He was killing the guitar as well as the bass.

I think that Prince is so self-aware now. Like Eddie Murphy when he stopped doing his original "HEH-HEH-HEh" snort laugh. Prince's musicianship in all phases has improved, but.... that has only served to make his music completely uninteresting. Imperfection can be charming. Perfection, meh. I prefer everything about Prince before he knew too much.
