Lets talk about the "Sign of the Times" concert film

Lets talk about the sign of the times concert movie. I decided to make a copy for a friend and I put it in my DVD player to see if it copied good and I ended up watching the whole thing.I haven't watched it In so long
How much of the concert was filmed at paisley park and how much was actually LIVE and taken from the Paris tour ? Also what's your favorite parts? Mine are the performances of Housequake And if I was your gf.also, prince looks great . one last question ? Are there any things u didn't like about the film ? Mine is the "nows the time " band performance before u got the look .I just never cared for it and would rather see more prince but the sheila e drum solo was incredible .

To answer that question (to the best of my knowledge):

-100% of the concert's audio was LIVE, and from various Paris shows

-about 90-95% of the visuals were filmed at Paisley (including some of the crowd shots) and was lipsynced to said audio

-the other 5% (you can easily tell said parts due to the excessive film grain and noise) were actual footage from the Paris tour (a good example is the guitar solo part during ICNTTPOYM).

Actually a bit of a disappointment. Don't get me wrong, SOTT was probably his best tour ever, but the movie ... NOT a concert movie at all, but rather a very long extented video ... I hoped for a concert movie in the style of "Stop Making Sense", but instead it turned out, as with many of Prince's output, to "controlled" and not just a documentation of the concert, in all its brilliance, as it was.

It was filmed in Rotterdam, not Paris.

No. almost all of Prince's vocals and Sheila's drums were re-recorded in studio. The original recordings weren't deemed usable and a lot of overdubbing went into them. Prince's vocals are a bit too perfect to sound "live".

One of the reasons the drums sound so unique in that thing is because they're recorded in an entirely different space than the original drums and that sounds a bit weird as a result. I've always liked what it sounds though.

Love the movie, seen it many many times, even own the blu-ray, shot so incredibly well, evidence points to Albert Magnoli directing (uncredited)... but the only complaint is that the syncing of the guitar strumming audio to what we see in the footage is totally off on "Forever in My Life". Even to a regular person, something seems too fake there. It's especially apparent after the first few lyrics. It's a dead give away that it's a mimed performance.

Quite often I'll listen to the audio rip from the DVD. Some good versions on there.

I still have the 'life size' cardboard cuttout of Prince from the cover.

lol

I like "Hot Thing", "Housequake" and "Forever in My Life". The only things that drag the movie down are the goofy segues, the "U Got the Look" MTV video and "Slow Love". It's a shame Prince has never really been captured properly live though. "Livesexy" is pretty great and the "Musicology" LA Forum show too, but there's no proper DVD of either of them.

For someone with such a reputation and history as a great live performer, it's a shame there's not more stuff out there besides this and Rave 2000.

They filmed the tour for the Symbol album in IMAX but never released it, which is a shame.

I have always had a hard time watching this because of all of the poorly done lipsyncing. It just really bothers me and I can't watch it. Its my least favorite of his dvds

Me too, even though I don't think the lipsynching is that poorly done.

I'm also not as mad into the live versions vs. album versions as everyone else. I prefer all the album versions myself.

So it's lipsynched and overdubbed -- the whole thing is FANTASTIC.

Thank goodness he made that one, it will live forever.
