MY 2 CENTS ON PRINCE NOW!!

Personally, and I maybe wrong on this, but I have the feeling that Princes' days as a rock/funk performer are over, either due to health and/or age problems, or he just doesnt want to do it anymore, which is why he is doing this tour with just a piano and microphone, and that 3rdEyeGirl was his last rock/funk oriented band!! I dont think we will ever see him funk it out anymore!!

The last 3 CDs that came out, PlectrumElectrum, Art Official Age and HitNRun, with 3rdEyeGirl sold dismally, if at all, making the 3rdEyeGirl project his worse in his entire career, and basically, anyway, his music has gone from bad to worse post-Emancipation.

He tried, and failed, to stay relevant, by recruiting a much younger band in age than he was, to keep in with the music buying generation of today, who are only interested with the music scene as it is now so it would equate with record sales and, hence, money in his bank account!! I also personally beleive that, and this too could be wrong, the reason he abandoned the Hit & Run Tour of this year was because of lacklustre ticket sales(He only did 4 dates - not EXACTLY a tour is it??).

He lost his charisma and enigma near enough 2 decades ago, that now, nobody is really in awe of him anymore!!

Very soon, he is going to be joining the likes of Billy Joel and Barry Manilow at some casino in Las Vegas!!

"Personally..." "I may be wrong..." "Not feeling it..." = not fact.

Of course Prince is over, he and some people on this site just haven't accepted it yet.

Interesting post, whilst I totally respect your argument, I would offer a different view which, of course, is just my opinion also. All opinions, as I am sure you would agree, are subjective rather than objective.

Firstly from what I hearing (nothing official!) Prince willplay an hour on the Piano and an hour with a Band, so Funk may well make an appearance.

Secondly, the demand for Prince in the UK and many other place is still very high. There are not many artists who can announce a gig at 12pm and hav people Queuing for the best part of 8 hours to get it, I know as I was one of them!

Thirdly, record sales are simpkly different in the new era. Other than Disney and Adele is is incredibly rare to break the one million mark. Whilst with HitNRun Prince was paid through Tidal and so it is difficult to see how many cd's may have been sold. I would also have to add that once the very First CD or digital file drops the sales are hit heavily by Filesharing. Within Hours of HitNRun's release I saw the album being offered for free left, right and centre. Many people I meet simply say to me that they would never pay for music as they see it as being free. Personally, I love having the Cd and am more than willing to support an Artist I appreciate.

Finally, If Prince never played another note, or created an album a year but kept it to himself I couldn't really complain. If you had told me 25 years ago that Prince would still be creating music and Touring (especially if you asked me in 92-93 when he announced his 'retirement'!) I would have been enormously happy with that. In the last 2 years there have been 3 albums including a very electric sounding project, a guitar heavy tour with essentially 3 guitarists and a drummer and now a solo Piano tour.

After 37 years of chart successes and touring, I am more than happy if Prince simply enjoys himself now. Bearing in mind he is financially secure and seems to be happy, that's cool. Prince is still finding ways to be innovative.

Sorry for going on and once again, Thank you for your post. Whilst we may not agree I think yu make some really interesting points, so Thank you.

And how he lost charisma and enigma 2 decades ago, when he put one 3121 (my personal favorite and in my top 5 albums), Musicology and LotusFlow3r in last decade?

What happened to you?Are you losing your purple spirit...don't give up. biggrin

Not plausible. Around the end of the 90’s and into the 2000’s he was only really of any interest to his diehards. The stage shows were at much smaller venues and it was about performance and not spectacle which must have cut costs considerably. None of this affected his creative output and experimentation with different sounds. Look at Slaughterhouse compared to The Rainbow Children.

Prince will continue to perform a very mix bag of music until he dies I’m pretty sure. This latest project is just something different that generates revenue at relatively low cost, lets his session players have a break over Xmas (they can’t all be Jehovah’s Witnesses) and gives something a bit different for the die hards. In all likelihood he probably had a good response from playing the piano for a bit at a Paisley gig and just thought ‘OK, that went well, let’s do it on a bigger stage and make some money’, and why the hell not. This would seem a fair guess in light of the fact that venues weren’t even booked or confirmed at the time of making his announcement. Very whimsical.

The "Piano and a Microphone" Tour seems like a musically worthwhile endeavor.

What other artist would embark on such a tour after releasing something so sonically different than "Hitnrun"??

His days of selling albums are really done, especially since he will never be tied to the distribution and promotions of a Label again. Plus, to most people, his music isn't as good accessible, and he comes off as a jerk.

Never mind the quality-- with "Hitnrun", "Plectrum Electrum", "Art Official Age", he's actually more artistically diverse than ever--which is noteworthy.

I dont think he is artistically diverse anymore!! In the 80s he brought out really funked up albums such as 1999, Purple Rain and Sign 'O' The Times, then he completely swung the other way and brought out Around The World In A Day and Parade!! Now, THATS diversity for ya!!!

Now it all just seems the same sub-standard kiddy pop to me!!!
