BBC docu and Lovesexy

In a recent thread someone mentioned that there's a BBC documentary that shows Prince in the studio during the recording of Lovesexy. Can anyone confirm this?

The wooh is on the one!

I think I have a BBC documantary on VHS tape...

I think we are seeing Prince and his crew running out to his limo after a Lovesexy concert (maybe after the famous Dortmund show?),

Otherwise I remember very little about this from BBC, other than I loved this back when I saw it first..

Omnibus - Prince Rogers Nelson : originally broadcast BBC 13th December 1991.

...if I recall features Prince in the studio during breaks in the Lovesexy tour (recording God Is Alive?) rather than recording the Lovesexy album.

Also broadcast in the USA, in a slightly different cut as The Prince of Paisley Park.

Good documentary, with a fair amount of otherwise unseen live footage, going as far back as the Dirty Mind tour.

Always wondered if anyone ever attempted a fanedit to incorporate all the footage into one version - although I think the only differences are in the interviews rather than archive footage?

There was a bootleg knocking about a while ago called The Magnoli Files which contained this broadcast in addition to Prince - A Musical Portrait (which was also shown on BBC, before being made available many years later as part of NPGMC) and a Behind The Beat Special (broadcast around the time of the SOTT movie release (and devoting a fair amount of it's running time to clips from the movie) and the UK Lovesexy dates).

Yup. The Omnibus docu shows Prince recording God Is Alive and the bass part to Partyman, but nothing from Lovesexy as far as I recall.

The Behind The Beat special had footage from PP when prepping the Lovesexy Tour and I'm pretty sure there was an interview with Femi Jiya and a shot of P's hand-written instructions for a (rock hard) remix of Lovesexy? Or, I could just be making stuff up!

I've still got the programme on a VHS tape, later backed up to DVD RW, taped from the TV when it was shown. If it's the program referred to in this topic, it was from the BBC TV Arena Series shown on BBC2 in the UK.

It had clips from the SOTT 1987 new years eve party, interviews with Sheila E and Mavis Staples (also shown hearing the lyrics to Jaguar in the studio with Prince and the him coaching her for the recording), after show at Camden with Mica Paris being handed the mic from the stage, rehearsal footage at Wembley Arena in London (with Cat and Eric Leeds featured).

Loads more, typical really of the quality programmes BBC make.

No interviews with Prince but quite a few with his band etc.

Hope this helps?

PS) Musical Portrait is mixed from live aftershow and studio- and arena rehearsals.. , with comments from Eric Clapton, George Clinton, Randy Newman, Miles Davis, Little Richard, Terence Trent Darby, and a few others...?

Omnibus is totally different.....?

I'm familiar with the documentaries described above. But someone stated in another thread that there's a docu showing Prince recording tracks to the Lovesexy album. I can't remember having seen anything like that.

With specific reference to Prince recording Lovesexy tracks, there isn't any such footage in an official documentary and I'm unaware of anything circulating unofficially.

I will have to search my dvds, but the footage you might be referring to, is from a documentary showing a remix of Lovesexy, (in the studio, I don't remember the footage being anything extra special) but someone was holding up the hand written lyrics, on a piece of paper.

Could be this one. All I remember is Prince and Femi sitting on a large mixing console with an alternate lovesexy track playing in the background. The mix had a more distinct beat than the drowned out version on the disk. Or maybe it was just the the way it was coming off in the doc.

Somewhere, circulating online, is a short piece of a documentary that features a computer screen (total 1980s style) with Lovesexy on it. Like it was their recording software. The video also features the guys working on the fake Thunderbird and the wardrobe people. It was shot all at Paisley Park. I don't think it's on youtube.

No they're not.

Musical Portrait was a 10 minute short from '89. Interviews with Miles Davis, George Clinton, Eric Clapton, Randy Newman, TTD interspersed with Lovesexy era footage, directed by Albert Magnoli. I think it was initially broadcast on BBC2 in the UK (at least that where I first saw it).

The Omnibus documentary is 60 minute programme from '91, coverng the whole of Prince's career to that point.

They do share some of the same footage but they're not the same.

^ thanks for clearing this mistake from Bart...

I remember the Omnibus documentary, like some journalist is arriving to Minneapolis at the middle of the night, driving to Paisley Park in a car looking out the fron window..... with some kind of "voice over" telling something about how cool Prince is, while the first track is being Sign O The Times playing ?

Bits of 'Musical Portrait' were also included on the Interactive CD-Rom.

It was a great documentary with unseen footages, i know it by heart.

First time i saw live footages from :

-the 1981.06.03 Paris le Palace gig

-the 1983.08.03 First avenue gig

-the 1988.07.26 Camden Palace gig

The full version of the first two later surfaced among fans but not the third, one day i hope !

Yes, true. It's an excerpt from a longer documentary film Magnoli was making, and which of course is somewhere in a PP vault. Omnibus got access to some of the footage because Prince was an ass and didn't do the interview he'd promised them (the reason they came to Minneapolis), so instead they got to use a bunch of archive footage from his archive.

.

Musical Portrait was one of the NPGMC downloads, IIRC. There's a boot DVD which contains all three of those "BBC docus": The Magnoli Files.

.

IIRC the Omnibus docu has various versions, the original BBC version is slightly different from the version sold internationally.

That doctumentary is the one you're thinking of. It's about 4 minutes long. It's on the boot DVD "Global Funk School presents Lovesexy Live." I don't think the 4 minutes on the DVD are the whole thing. But it's interesting to see the people putting together the 67 T-Bird prop, and them playing around at the mixing board. You just see Prince for like 10 seconds walking away and yelling "Run Sheila Run!"

I think the footage of the Lovesexy sessions in the studio are from Behind the Beat or another similar show, like Euro Trash.

Like most of you, my memory is fuzzy!!

.

There's footage of rehearsals on the sound stage of Paisley Park, with Sheila and Cat running around, and the model car.

.

There's footage of Femi in the studio (no prince), playing seperate tracks from Lovesexy and showing how complicated a recording it was.

.

There's also interviews with the costume people, showing his outfits and shoes on the tour.

.

Whether these are from one programme or a few, I don't remember! LOL !!
