I looked at Under the Cherry Moon this past weekend after having not seen it since when I saw it at the movies the year it came out. I must admit, I found it to be pretty enjoyable. I had a handful of hearty, hearty laughs. Prince actually was pretty funny in the role. The movie was really campy and had the vibe of a film made by a student in college. A fun movie if not taken seriously.

Shall I reveal a secret? I put off watching this movie for years... Then I watched it for the first time with my son (?!) after I took him to see his first Prince concert (as an adult) and he and I both liked it. He thought it was engaging and funny--and I thought Prince was cute and sexy in it. Could it have been better with a different director? Of course! It is uneven and cheesy as hell (the dying scene is comic gold LOL). But, I still enjoyed it then, and do now. wink

FUNKYNESS

I always believed that if you TRULY loved Prince - the comprehensive Prince: the art, the style, the humor, the vision, the courage - that you had to like this film. This was when Prince was trying things that no one else had the talent - or the guts - to attempt. He was fearless and wreckless at the same time. And he hit a new high water mark most of the time.

My favorite P movie. Yes, even better than Purple Rain, it's all fun and light, no drama.

There's no drama in a Black American gigolo getting capped by the white father of the French
broad he's screwing (pun intended) out of her million dollar fortune?

My father's two favorite scenes in Prince movies:

-UTCM...when Isaac Sharon has Christopher Tracy shot

-PR...when Francis L. slapped the taste out of The Kid's mouth, knocking him from the room back into the hall.

I think that when people understand it - like Graffiti Bridge - is somewhat of a fantasy with a certain amount of camp, they can take it for what it is and enjoy it. The comic performances are rich and it looks fantastic - in black and white. If you appreciate the light romantic films from the 40s and 50s, you get this. If you come looking for Purple Rain 2, you dont.

It was someone on the weed-thread I think, who said that though you're Danish you live in Holland.

That's alright then, for we don't want UTCM-fans here...!
Although of course you need plenty of weed to watch the film, which is good for our economy.

I love that it doesn't take itself too seriously, I'm kinda surprised it wasn't a bigger hit. It's pretty much the perfect movie for Prince fans, basically just an hour and a half of him horsing around and being all Prince-y. Far better movie than Graffiti Bridge imo, and more like Prince doing his version of one of those old Beatles movies.

Only if you're referring to Magical Mystery Tour.

And comparing UTCM to romantic comedies from the forties and fifties, as funkyness did above, is insulting to all people with taste.

I saw it in Detroit at the Bel Air Drive In. I had a lot of fun, great memories...

Which I truly cherish because the very next week, they bulldozed the Bel Air Drive In to make the Bel Air Shopping Center. lol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

Honestly, I'm not surprised it didn't do too well. I think people decided pretty easily that they weren't going to the movies and pay full price for a black-and-white, comedy, period piece. It was just TOO outside the box.
