Time hasn't been kind to Prince's early 90s music.

I actually wrote this on a MJ board, but wondered what your thoughts on this subject is:

If you listen to some of Madonna, Janet and Prince's early 90s albums, a lot of that stuff sounds very much "of its time." But stuff like In The Closet, Who Is It, Dangerous, Give Into Me, Will You Be There, Jam... those songs could be released today and, granted it wouldn't sound like contemporary chart music, but it wouldn't sound dated either. You don't listen to those songs and think "yeah, that's what music sounded like in 1991."

But look at what Madonna was doing back then, stuff like Rescue Me, Vogue, Fever, Deeper & Deeper - it sounds like early 90s dance music. Or the brilliant "janet" album from 93, as much as I love it, stuff like You Want This, Throb, This Time, New Agenda, Funky Big Band, Because Of Love etc does sound like it was early 90s to my ears. And don't even get me started on Prince's early 90's music because that has aged worse than anybody's.

I'm of the opinion that good is good, regardless of when it was released. I love Elvis and it doesn't matter to me that most of my favourite songs are from the 50's and 60's. So, to say something sounds dated doesn't matter to me one way or another. It's a question of whether it sounds good. However, I do see your point. Prince's early 90's output is very much 'of its time'. And this is just my opinion here, so please don't crucify me, but I think some Prince's early 90's music is pretty awful. D+P, 'Symbol', and Graffiti Bridge are, in my mind, in the bottom 5 of Prince's overall body of work. Not because they sound dated, I just don't like them.

Joy in Reptition sounds timeless... Yes recorded in '86 but released in 1990.

yep his 90's music is pretty awful as a whole. A few great tracks here and there but mostly worse than any major recording artist should be. What happened? Why such a dramatic turn for the worst in such a short time? That's the greatest mystery in RocknRoll.

apart from Come, which I think is mostly brilliant,I agree with you.

so much mediocrity.

the best songs on GB are from the 80s.

Actually I think the exact opposite. Most of Dangerous has that dated NJS sound. Erotica, janet. and The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale sound like a moment in history, of course, but nowhere near as dated as those terrible Teddy Riley tracks.

It won't be kind to some of his 2000's either.

Personally, I don't mind dated as long as it sounds good.

One only wonders how "HITNRUN" will sound in 20 years.

The genius of some of "Around The World In A Day" & all of "Parade" is that they're timeless. One could make an argument for "One Nite Alone" & "Rainbow Children" too.

I have to say that contrary to everyone else, I actually like Hitnrun better than AOA. I actually like songs on. Hitnrun. Not that it's a great album, but far better than the corny amateurish AOA. I honestly believe that in time it will age far far better than AOA.

I recently posted this on the MJ thread:
Michael Jackson's music is timeless and eternal
while Prince's music is dated and aging terribly.
Thoughts? lol

Mjs Quincy Jones tracks are timeless. I am always amazed at how well they have held up. Whenever they play wherever they play the fit right in.

Like Prince through, his 90's tracks are pretty awful.. But better than Prince's 90's work I got to admit. Madonna's 90's work has aged the best out of the three.

Haha, I've obviously hit a nerve! If you think crap like Daddy Pop, Willing & Able, Tick Tick Bang, Thunder, Cream, Strollin, The Continental, The Max, Push, Jughead stands alongside masterpieces like Who Is It, Give Into Me and Will You Be There then you're in denial.

Huh.

You just randomly listed some Prince tracks that many fans really like and some that most of us don't care about. You're the one in denial if you think we're supposed to agree with you that they are "crap" and are supposed to consider those three MJ tracks above them without a question.

"Who is It", "Give Into Me" and "WIll You Be There" are just as dated as what's on the Diamonds & Pearls album. The pseudo-grunge of "Give Into Me" in particular died over 20 years ago.

Dangerous and the beats by Teddy Riley still sound ahead of it's time... Whoever saying it sounds dated must listen to the beats of In The Closet, Who Is It, Why You Wanna Trip On Me.

Not like MJ doesnt have dated material on HIStory as well. This Time Around and You Are Not Alone screamed 90s cheese.

There is just more of it from Prince given he has released more 90s material than many longtime artists.

Teddy Riley's tracks on Dangerous were incredibly ahead of their time. I remember spending a day in front of MTV in an airport's cafe in early 2001 and thinking "damn, everything today sounds like Dangerous 10 years ago!"

Comparing anything from that time to Dangerous and calling it dated is unfair because Dangerous was such a visionary work. All that stuff was of its time and relevant back then, including P's music.

Completely agree!!! Just the story behind the production of how MJ wanted Teddy Riley to live at his house all those months... The production does not seem dated at all. The instrumental tracks on most of the songs on that album are still ahead of it's time... Just listen to the intro of Why You Wanna Trip On Me... I mean come on people who is saying that is dated!!

Hmmm. I would disagree. Good music is good music. If your ear is trained to sway with the times, then it may sound 'dated' I suppose. If your ear is trained to what's 'good' irrespective of the decade, there's really no difference in the way it sounds.

Time can't do anything to music. It's the perspective that changes (for some).

I disagree. For me 90s Prince is the best music of his career. I like the early 90s in general though so for me thats the best for not just Prince but music in general. To each their own. Everyone will like different eras of music and that is fine
