Bottom 5 songs on SOTT

On the heels of the top 5 thread, I thought I'd make it harder and do this thread.

Mine first:

1) Slow Love (live version is awesome, studio is dope, just not as amazing as others on this masterpiece wink )

2) It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night (same as 1, even though it is technically "live")

3) Strange Relationship (I like the stripped down outtake and again a great song, but...)

4) SOTT (Great lyrics and poignant and all, but the "time..." and "times" as a hook is semi-annoying/superfluous to me)

5) It (have grown to love it n was this close to saying U Got the Look, but either way lurking)

Hate to do a "negative" (so many quotations in this post lol) thread, but I couldn't come up with anything better n a thread about Tricky wouldn't have gone anywhere, so bringiton (your picks, I mean cool) smile.

For all time I am with you, you are with me.

These are all still classics, but not as classic as the rest.

.

5. Ballad of Dorothy Parker (I can feel my heart being ripped out)

4. It

3. The Cross

2. Beautiful Night (Just too long)

1. Slow Love (I like it, but it is pretty ordinary next to Starfish and Coffee and Hot Thing)

.

Still these 5 songs would be near the top on any other album.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Slow Love (seems to be a lot of agreeent on this one, surprisingly_

U Got the Look (always sounde like a designer jeans commercial. Lyrics are uber cheese)

It (Pretty much just a beat)

Adore (Never been a big fan of the ballads, aside from a few. Overrated.)

I Could Never take the Place of Your Man (just never grabbed me).

I don't hate or skip any of these songs except for Slow Love but I had to pick a bottom five. It really is a stellar album. You could sub those 5 songs out of just about anything else Prince has done over the last 20 years and it would have improved the album.

i really like this thread becuz it shows the members who r just "imo" people that listen 2 sound, and others who can disect the musical diversity, sophistication and artistic layers that Prince can have to offer vs. just "what sounds good 2 my ears"...

fams vs. real fans who appreciate the MUSIC of PRINCE

i really cant find 5 songs on the album bad enough to qualify on a "bottom 5" list, but if forced to pick 5:

The Cross

Forever In My Life

Strange Relationship

Play In The Sunshine

U Got The Look

OK...I'm not saying that these songs are terrible...I just think the other songs are so much stronger....

5)Starfish and Coffee

4)Hot Thing---There's nothing wrong with the music in this song.I just think that the lyrics are kinda weak ("barely 21...looking for big fun"??).The lyrics are lazy.

3)Play In The Sunshine----a fun, lively tune but it doesn't grab me like the best songs on the album do.

2)Slow Love----nothing wrong with this song at all! I like it alot...but you asked me to pick five,so smile

1)It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night---It just seems like such a throwaway. We all know that there are alot of excellent songs recorded during this era that could have appeared in its place.

....

Exactly, my 5 least favoruites are still 9/10 songs, better than anything on about 20 other Prince albums. Ballad of Dorothy Parker and It are actually 10/10 songs. That is how ridiculously good that album is!

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

What do you mean by this: "My thread... is terrible"?? confuse

What thread do you refer to? wink

because I haven't made that many threads recently.... ???

I have made one thread with "Prince & Cat" (and this is with Miles Davis too)..????

Ok, but... that's not as bad as this thread about the acclaimed masterpiece Sign O' The Times.. heart

Alright, let's give it a go.
It
Hot Thing
Slow Love
Beautiful Night
Adore
None of these songs are bad, but they don't move me as much as the others do. Beautiful Night just doesn't fit very well, but that may be because it's a live recording. And perhaps Prince just wanted a party track after all those serious songs. And in case of Adore, I always wondered if this really was the best way to end the album. I used to have it on a cassette tape with the b-sides behind it, so in my mind, Adore is followed by Shockadelica... biggrin

#5 - Yeah, I can feel me ripping your heart out! lol possibly the most awesome song on the album and probably one of the top 10 Prince songs. Still so fresh, so smooth, so original. When The Ballad of Dorothy Parker's opening drums start my day is immediately brightened.

I'm just kidding though, Adorecream, this is a hard list to create or even contemplate.

I'll try... It, Slow Love, Hot Thing... if I must come up with another two I'd say It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night and... I'm sorry... I can't do it. I am ashamed of myself for even including 'It'. My bottom 5 only has 3... Slow Love, Hot Thing, and It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night. And I won't admit to any of this in person! lol

Oh.. and I'm disgusted, appalled, and dismayed with Purple Politician, too, for including Strange Relationship. lol

When you see people wanting to exclude SOTT from SOTT, you've seen everything.

My own.

Play in the Sunshine

It

It's Gonna be a beautiful night

Slow Love

Starfish and Coffee

(These are in the order I would take them off the album if someone pointed a gun at my head and ordered me tp remove some tracks or die. The first three are the only ones I'm not completely crazy about).

The rest of the tracks are Sacred Prince. Maybe Hot Thing is too easy for him, but it's a perfect fit on the album -- other than that the rest of the songs are essential Prince.

I get what purplepolitician is saying. "Time...time..." isn't the greatest chorus ever. But not every song needs a good chorus. Sign O'the Times will always be in my Prince top ten.

It's minimalist on purpose. "Oh our sad and disorienting time" or "Oh the times we live in, such anxiety!"lol would have been quite explicit right? A single word says it all when it's sung in the right tone.

1. Slow Love

3. The Cross

Everything else is killer. For those who put Dorothy Parker and Strange Relationship, really?

And It? Shit, you must not be getting "It"!
