If you had to make a single album from Musicology/3121/Planet Earth which songs would you choose in what order?

I made this playlist on my i-Pod and I think it's pretty great:

1. Musicology
2. Chelsea Rodgers
3. A Million Days
4. The One U Wanna C
5. All The Midnights In The World
6. Guitar
7. What Do U Want Me 2 Do
8. The Marrying Kind
9. If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life
10. Reflection
11. The Word
12. Planet Earth

Surely you'd have to find a place for Somewhere Here On Earth.

1. Musicology (Hit single #1)
2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance
3. A Million Days
4. What Do U Want Me 2 Do?
5. Future Baby Mama (Hit single #2)
6. Black Sweat (Hit single #3)
7. Call My Name
8. Cinnamon Girl
9. Planet Earth (Nice closer indeed, but with the salsa part edited out)

^ this was my try.... wink

Ps. I really don't like the song Chelsea Rodgers at all, sounds like a Prince parody imo.... sad

this thread...again?

let's say I think M and 3121 are perfect the way they are (except for "Life O the Party")

but I wish he had saved the FEW good songs of PE (bad album) to merge them with the "best" (aka, my fav songs) of Lotus

(in my ideal world NEWS-ChI-S-MPLSound wouldn't exist)

2001.Rainbow Children

2004.Musicology

2006.3121

2009.Lotus+PE

Lotus reminded me a bit of Emancipation, not the style of music but just the overindulegence have music, too many filler songs on Lotus/MPS Sound and few quality songs to constitute a GOOD ALBUM as a whole...

Planet Earth where there is musical sophistication in SOME of the songs, over all it is very dull and boring for a PRINCE album...

Musicology has some very good tracks, no real GREAT tracks, but it is a very AVERAGE album overall just like AOA.

20Ten has a few stand out songs but gets a little stale and the lynn drum beats sound more like an imitation of his early 80's than a modern reinventing sound that Prince has to offer...

3121 IMO is the most consistent album out of them all when songs like The Word, The Dance, Fury, Black Sweat...

So it's hard to make an album because PRINCE always invisions a THEME for the album, which is why many great outtakes end up in the vault, like Alan Leeds said simply because they never fit the theme and concept of the album.

Like PRINCE, his fans always do to much when it comes to organizing, re arranging album tracks and make compilations... Just keep it simple.

1. Musicology

2. Black Sweat

3. Somewhere Here on Earth

4. A Million Days

5. Fury

6. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance

7. The Word

8. Call My Name

9. The Dance

... And then u realize these three albums are seperate for a reason.

LotusFlower needs to be included. Most of it was recorded around the same time as the others.

wow I disagree with U here about 1 song.

"What Do U Want Me 2 Do?" is one of his finest songs from the 00's imho.

Poor copies of the past exactly.

My problem is: Even with Lotus flower, Mpls and 20TEN added i couldn't even find enough songs to create a killer album.

The songs are so middle of the road (either pale copies of the past or simply just not good) that there's no way to get anything really great out of it. A nice EP, but not more.

So happy about HnR. Never thought that I would be able to enjoy a Prince album as a whole ever again.

I kind of agree on those albums, maybe with the exception of LotusFlower, all being just OK with only a couple top level P tracks on each.
.
What you said about HNR is exactly how I feel about AOA. His best since Gold with the least skippers for me.

Yes that's a common reaction, in fact it might be the most prevelant one on the org - but remember, you're only a hater if you dislike tracks like Layitdown, it's fine to dislike Resolution! comfort

I really like Resolution. I didn't include it on my list, largely because it is a closing track and I felt Planet Earth would be a better album closer than Resolution, but it is definately one of the better songs from 04-09.

I do think Planet Earth (the song) is shockingly underrated around these parts, especially when you take into account all the love a song like Empty Room gets which is very similar in terms of mood and structure. With Empty Room I felt like he never quite nailed it, but Planet Earth is epic. That lead guitar line he plays over the final chorus is one of the best moments on any Prince record ever.

Resolution is a say-nothing cliched attempt at a feel-good political statement sung over a Mentos jingle.

I don't dislike the title track per se, it's like something from C&D to me. When I first heard it I felt like I'd heard it all before, and still feel that way - it's not bad, it's just not giving me anything I can get hooked on.

Why? they were 3 very seperate albums i think, in tone, stylistically etc. 3121 is a mile away from Musicology, the mixing, mastering, it's completely different. Different era, different band. It'd be like trying to put Purple Rain and Around the World in a Day into one album.
