Personally at the time of the release I liked it, but it had a feel of been there done that before. Over the years since I enjoy it even more.

99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

BoraBora

.

On a side note, I find myself not listening too much to "Musicology"-"3121"-"Planet Earth".

.

In some kind of way, I find them boring and not so much musically entertaining.

They were fun when released (more or less) but now it isn't so.

I could put a great single CD with the tracks I prefer from all 3, but that's all.

.

When I want to listen to Prince I tend to go to the other albums, from the first to "NEWS" and from "LotusFlower" and "MPLSound" to now.

.

Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance gets shat on here so much... Where boring and bland R&B songs on Musicology, 3121, Lotusflow3r and Planet Earth always get treated with royalty...

ICPC, is probably one of the most creative, funkiest, unique song he has released in the 2000's... This song's quirkiness, reminds me of his 80's work.

ICPC and Sticky Like Glue could easily been an outtake or song that he could've recorded in the 80's.

Couldn't agree more. I've been reading this thread wondering if/when this would come up...

Musicology:

I really love the 1st half of this album.. minus Life O The Party..

I also like Musicology way better than 3121.

(and better than Planet Earth and also better than 20Ten)

First, I don't understand the hate for this album. But I especially can't understand why people prefer the first half over the second half. TMK-IEWTMIUL-OTC is a fantastic run of music. And all of tracks 7-12 are really solid to me.

The main reason I can see dislike (not hate) for this album is how bland the first half is, save the two standout tracks. That makes it hard to appreciate the rest. Song by song:

Musicology 8/10
Illusion ... 7/10
A Million Days 5/10 -- this is so forced, it's painful
Life o ... 5/10 -- yep, same as previous beloved song
Call ... 9/10
Cinnamon ... 5/10
What ... 8/10
The Marrying Kind 8/10
If Eye ... 8/10
On the Couch 9/10
Dear ... 8/10
Reflection 8/10

7.3 average
Pretty decent little albun

Why on earth would you want to write Prince a letter? Are you seriously thinking/expecting he will read it? And how on earth would one know the actual address that you can use to send a letter to Prince? Only if you have sent him a letter before, I suppose. neutral

He wrote back and invited me over to play ping-pong and eat pancakes.

But I always skip Dear Mr. Man and Cinnamon Girl.

Reflection is my favorite on this album.

Not a great album by anystretch, but much better than 20ten or Planet Earth.

Do you skip them because of the music, lyrics, or both? I skip Cinamon because of the melody. But Dear Mr. Man is one of my favorites.

Mostly because of the lyrics. I find Cinnamon Girl the more tolerable of the two. But I don't care much for the music of Dear Mr. Man either.

Great title track, but the rest is a Prince-lite snoozefest.

At the time, I loved it - but looking back, part of why I loved it was context. Prince was experiencing a major comeback in 2004. TV, magazines, concerts, talk shows, etc.

Musicology was basically a "return to form" and thrust him back in the public eye.

I still like the album a lot, I just don't play it that often. Or any of the 5 copies that I have. razz

Strange, I like it a lot more now than when it first came out. I used to think it was bland, but I can appreciate it a lot more now.

I think its a great album to give to non prince fans, because it's not so explicit and out there, yet it's filled with great catchy little songs, with fantastic musicianship. It's a great album.
We're here, might as well get into it.

well I was disappointed with Musicology cuz it was such a weak and bland album compared to TRC, same as I felt with 20ten after Lotusflow3r and now HNR after AOA. There are a few decent songs on Musicology like A million day, Call my name, Dear Mr. Man and Reflection but not any strong material. Anyway It's way better than PLEL and HNR

Yes, agree. A good album followed by a bad album. 3121 good, Planet Earth not so good..etc etc...

This was when it seemed the "Prince can do no wrong" critics started appearing, because the Musicology tour was amazing and really brought back Prince to the masses. The album itself was a mixed pallette of styles and showmanship. It was a "look what I can do" album instead of actually having any meaning coming from Rainbow Children. The songs werent cohesive enough to keep my interest, but seperatley they are nice.

Call My Name is a great solo track

I never turn off Musicology or Marrying Kind and Reflection is so beautiful. Life O The Party is also a great track.

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Really? I prefer the live version by far. The album version is nice but I think the rimshot is too loud. It really annoys me.

It's not a bad album. It's just quite dull.

Having said that, how many times has Call My Name been covered? Morgan James had a moderate US hit with it.
