"I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore"

I was wondering if there has been any speculation on who the "favorite protege" is mentioned in this song?

I'm guessing the term "picked the flower" he says before that line is another way of saying "deflower" (means the taking of virginity). So he's implying that he took the virginity of his "favorite protoge". As for who, it's only speculation.

Probably up there in my top 3 Prince songs of all time.

The greatest ballad he ever wrote imo.

Thank you for the info! For some reason, I always pictured it being about Vanity...

Agree. So touching, haunting, introspective and personal- territory he doesn't always hit post-1990. I love that he allowed the bitterness to overwhelm the track. Cool that Ani D is on this lifetime song.

Has anyone been able to determine whether Mayte is having an affair with another woman?

One of his best ballads ever. By far the best song from the Rave album.

This is one of his greatest ballads. It's a big reason why I love Rave so much.

The song is about Mayte.

Even though the song could be entirely fictional (the "I love u but I don't trust u anymore/U trust me but u don't love me anymore" is a good song premise) it's legitimate to assume this song, as well as Manowar and Strange But True, is about Mayte, since breaking up with her was what was going on in P's life at the time.

It's about Mayte, on the heels of their marriage going bust after the Emancipation/Newpower Soul Era.

Simple but brilliant song. Something little like clesring his throat at the beginning sets the tone

Could easily be reworked into a song sung to Prince by a hardcore fan, post HitnRun.

I always felt the same way. This song seemed to be too brutally honest...so much so I would bet money it was true. Babyface has a song called "With Him" that seemed to talk about his wife cheating on him too.Plenty of songwriters write about women's infidelity but these just really sound true

If you can find/watch the version he did at the Montreaux Jazz Fest, I believe 2009, wow, great version!! He sang it at both performances and they were great. Really seemed to capture the emotion of the song. First show's version maybe a little better, but both very good. 2nd show as a whole I thought was better but the version of this song better in the first.
