How many albums do YOU consider P has released? In reading the many reviews & promotion for HITNRUN there is discrepancy in how many albums P has released. So just out of curiosity what do you include/exclude in your list? Is there a definitive answer? My list... 1. For You 2. Prince 3. Dirty Mind 4. Controversy 5. 1999 6. Purple Rain 7. Around The World In A Day 8. Parade 9. Sign O The Times 10. Lovesexy 11. Batman 12. Graffiti Bridge 13. Diamonds & Pearls 14. O+> N/A (Goldnigga) N/A (The B Sides) 15. Come N/A (1-800 New Funk) 16. I don't consider Crystal Ball, The Slaughterhouse or Chocolate Invasion to be proper albums - they are compilations. Aside from those, I agree with your list.

Be cohesive in your statements: if you remove a "Prince & 3rdEyeGirl" album then you must also remove the "Prince And The Revolution" and the "Prince And The New Power Generation" albums. One Nite Alone can't possibly be removed either, it wasn't a compilation. [Edited 9/4/15 2:39am] A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Internet- only albums don't count. They aren't actual albums, just odds & ends slapped together and given a heading, like "Chocolate Invasion".

I pretty much agree with your reaonings. Though I don't think I'd count Exodus. But it's right on the border for sure. I just can't bring myself to call it a Prince album when Sonny T is the lead vocalist. So by my count, HITNRUN will be album no.#39. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

There is no definitive, satisfiying answer to the OP's question. Once we played the game of removing everything that could be removed on any (logic or absurd) ground, including internet-only albums, compilations, live and video albums, soundtracks and "Prince and TR/TNPG/3EG..." albums and we ended-up with I think 13 albums . I tend to be all includive by asking myself those 2 questions: 1/ What constitutes an "album"? There is no definitive academic answer to that question. In the larger sense of the term, I'd say a musical work of art that constitutes a self-cohesive ensemble, whether studio or live and regardless of the format it was released on (physical or digital, audio or video), and isn't an offspring of another album (as a maxi-single usually is to an album). However to some extent compilations of previously released non-album tracks can be made into a cohesive work of art (hardly the case with The B-Sides or CD2 of ultimate but totally the case with TCI and TS). How many tracks and how long should an album have/be to be considered an album is a question no one has ever answered, though charts have their own, somewhat arbitrary systems to differenciate singles, EP's and albums. There are also things that are somewhere in-between, such as 1-800 New Funk, which is kind of half tracks from other albums and half non-album tracks. 2/ What should be included in an artists' discography? I'm very clear on the fact that the name on the cover does not matter at all (whether we're talking Prince or any other artist): my concern is who is/are the leading creative force(s) behind the work of art in question. Failing to acknowledge Prince's side-projects as part of is canon is virtually ignoring half of his released work, particularly on the first 15 years. In most cases with prince side-projects it's pretty obvious. There are cases that I would definitely call collaborative efforts. GCS 2000, Superconductor and Back In Time in particular, since Prince acted mostly as an arranger and musician, but he was definitely one of the lead creative forces. Many other side-projects were collaborative, more or less, similarly by the way to several "Prince" albums being collaborative as well anyway (it's not like he always did everything on every record). There are ambiguous cases such as albums that are basically Prince efforts but contain one or 2 songs without any input by Prince (Time Waits For No One or Romance 1600 for example) or albums containing a lot of Prince material but also a lot of other stuff (typically May 19 1992, Pandemonium, The Voice and Sheila E. are hard to classify). I would tend to include the first type (because one or 2 songs stilkl has Prince as a main creative force) and exclude the second (because at some point Prince's contribution becomes more that (contributions to someone else's projects) that a Prince project including a few tracks that Prince had nothing to do with. . In the end, my preoccupation being trying to establish a Prince canon that is as comprehensive as possible, regardless of prejudice and with as little subjectivity as possible I came-up with this (dates correespond last known recording sessions, not year of release): 1. Prince - For You (1978) 79. Judith Hill - Back In Time (2015) (side project)

The confusion is because most commentators only count studio albums. As P is a multi genre musician I include instrumentals. IMO Goldnigga was a platform for the NPG & doesn't sound like a P album whereas Exodus does (Get Wild, The Good Life. Exodus). I also consider the heavily promoted New Power Soul a P release. I think it would've been a solo album if he hadn't been having the Warner battle. I did think of including The War but thought if I did that then the Maxi Singles would have to be in the list also as they have more music on them (Gett Off & Partyman etc). That's why I asked for personal lists. I was recently asked the question by a group of friends who are indifferent to P. When I started explaining the complexity of his music they all groaned, zoned out & called me a nut!!

Jeez, it's really not that complicated guys, surely?
Do instrumentals count? Of course they do! Denying that is like saying that albums with drums do or don't count. Ridiculous. Do DVDs/videos count? No, because they're not albums! Do EPs count? No. Do albums 'compiled' from different sessions count? Of course! Otherwise, there'd be very little other than NEWS! It's up to an artist to decide what statement they are making, by releasing tracks together that they see fit... an album isn't simply the sum of tracks from a particular session. Do albums released under another artist's/band name count? NO! A Mavis Staples album produced by Prince is not a Prince album!!
A caveat to that last point... Gold Nigga and Exodus clearly don't count, as they are clearly albums made by the collective that was the NPG, which featured Prince. Newpower Soul is clearly a Prince solo album in all but name, so it does count. no different to albums by 'Symbol' counting...
And Greatest Hits albums are rarely compiled by the artist, and are more record label money products, so they don't count either.
Also a list of albums released by an artist, is different to a complete discography. So the list is pretty clear to me:
1. Prince - For You (1978) 11. Prince - Batman (1989) 14. Prince And The New Power Generation - (Symbol) (1992) 16. Prince - The Black Album (1994) 33. Prince - Musicology (2004) [Edited 9/4/15 7:58am]

I wouldn't consider 'hit' compilations, but live projects yes, released as music though - not as a video or broadcast - those aren't albums they are videos
so , in my books, 40 with HITnRUN:
1. For You | |

In all points, Madhouse are really Prince albums, just not with his name on it. Look at some of the Time albums, Prince does everything on them except sing. I'd classify them more of a Prince album that a collection made by the people on the cover of that album.
The only thing I would not classify so much is the release of live albums. Yes, they are albums, but I wouldn't place them on a list as a band / musician, such as Pearl Jam can release many but I wouldn't say that they've released 70 odd albums (no real idea how many official live bootlegs there are)
Does anyone know though with regards to Judith Hill and Andy Allo how much Prince's contribution was?
Is there any hope of these two albums getting a physical release?

Superconductor had a limited cd release. Not sure about vinyl though. I bought the cd at her London gig. Just checked eBay & it's not there so I expect it'll be quite pricy now. Would love to see Judith Hill have a physical release also as it sure deserves it. A Japanese version with extras like the Liv Warfield album would be perfect!

This is absolutely inaccurate when u study the recording process of those records: Prince composed and arranged the stuff and was totally in charge creatively, it's not like the band sat together and composed the tracks and discussed about the tracklist. I can't go too much into details here but I know from a private convo with someone who was here at the time that a bandmember proposed a tracks for Gold Nigga and Prince rejected it because it was no his and he didn't want it on "his" album. If you say that anything that doesn't have "Prince" on the cover cannor be accepted as a Prince album then so be it, it's an acceptable position even if it's not mine. But then there is no sense in using fallacious arguments to say that Newpower Soul should be an exception to this rule. It's not a "Prince" album and Prince was neither more nor less the creative force behind it. If you gonna include Newpower Soul then you can just as well exclude NEWS because it was a full band recording injstead of just Prince. Regarding videos the concept of "video album" is now widely accepted since DVD's, as there was no notable difference in sound quality anymore between audio and video albums. I for one have listened to P's video albums much more often than watched them. However as they were primarily intended to be watched, it is indeed debatable whether they should enjoy an equal status with audio albums. As for live albums yes the Pearl Jam example is valid: with new technologies it's been easy for certain bands to release dozens of live albums. But then the question should be "how many studio albums has Prince released?". And even in that case it's complex: for example an artist can release a studio album of self-covers (it's been done) while a live album can be made of totally unreleased material (C-Note is a good example). The writing credits on Andy's album seem to be accurate, I for one do not believe that Prince ghostwrote the whole thing and someone who was around Paisley Park at the time told me in a private convo that, while unsure, they didn't believe that he did. The songs of Back In Time are all assumed to have been composed by Judith Hill but IDK exactly what this is based on. In both cases Prince was, however, totally involved in arranging the songs and playing most of the instruments, similarly to Larry's GCS 2000.
