BBC interview with Josh Welton on the making of HITNRUN...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news...s-34126942

Surprised to read that on some tracks Prince apparently doesn't touch an instrument

I am getting increasingly excited by this new album. Even if I'm concerned about Josh, I think the fact that prince is taking a new approach and riffing around someone else's work could really spur his creativity. Maybe we won't all like the backing tracks or beats (Josh has some stereotyped hackneyed dance crap going on), but what prince could put in the gaps could be interstellar even if it's just his vocal.

I'm also really warming to Josh as a person. Seems like a really nice kid and I'm starting to feel mean for being cynical about him. This could change if any of his beats are sub what I would expect of dubstep or drum and bass (I'm not expecting ed rush but something roni size or bukem-ish would do) - heaven help us if it's like whigfield!

So he continues to send a collaborator to interviews and we can't say it's because he's mad at his label.

But he does get interviewed too (EW, Ebony) so we can't say it's because he's "too lazy".

But, but, but! Prince stole Party Up! Do me Baby!He only cares about himself! He's only doing it for the money! It's all a trick!

Oh my oh my!!! What to do?

Oh I know! He's simply happy to let others shine, he's not hungry for fame and the spotlight, he's actualy serious about "growing" the talent he has around himself. Generosity... credit where credit is due... what on Earth is happening???

Nobody said so. Why do you make up stuff?

.

But he does get interviewed too (EW, Ebony) so we can't say it's because he's "too lazy".

.

Short, template-style interviews. A bit more effort than last time, but he can't really blame it on somebody else if it fails, of course. Not after he's been hyping his "buddy" Jay-Z's streaming service. Let's see what happens in the next weeks and months.

.

Oh I know! He's simply happy to let others shine, he's not hungry for fame and the spotlight, he's actualy serious about "growing" the talent he has around himself. Generosity... credit where credit is due...

.

He could also include actual credits on his records, of course. Also, I suppose it's coincidental that having a 25 year old front and center is helping him combat the image of stale paint-by-numbers output he's been producing for a decade now.

.

Also, isn't the bar real low when we have to congratulate Prince on NOT being a dick?

Plenty of people speculated he didn't do much AOA promotion because he was once again supposedly fighting with his label. If you don't feel like you're one of them (don't know how the hell how), then you shouldn't feel targeted.

The lack of on-record credits might have to do with the fact he (and Josh) didn't think the fans were ready to know just how much Josh contributed. He was credited though, and HitNRun is the full reveal.

As for being a dick, please get off your high horse: you're one most days of the week on Prince.org but maybe there is hope for you. Prince has steadily been changing for years, it's just that your mental image of him never did.

Possibly--I think I've never managed it. I've tried doing what I think it says, and failed.

If someone doesn't do it... well, they're probably not trying to mess up your day.

I never understood why it doesn't work for some people. I unno. Maybe it's the browser?...maybe not...who knows... shrug

Sometimes the secure 'a' after the http seems to cause a link of mine to not operate. I take the 's' out and it'll typically work fine
[Edited 9/3/15 5:55am]

And yes, I realize if someone doesn't do it, its not cuz they're specifically trying to mess up my day. I don't think that at all. So we're in the same page there. I just think they're being a little lazy. It's frustrating. Cuz now the, lets say 10, people who wanna see what is at the link hafta go thru the process of C&P the link, when it could just been one person doing that....the person who wants us to see what's at the link. And the rest of us could just simply click.

But back on topic, that's a nice interview.

We've now established that Prince can hear the sun rise as well as his previously mentioned ability to hear WiFi.

I wonder when the fuck he's gonna start being able to hear clipping?

alotta pressure on Joshua now... this better be good... i started off kinda jealous and hatin on the kid for having that kinda access to Paisley Park, but after realizing his input is behind personal favorites like, Clouds and U Know and Way Back Home, im past that fan-man silliness now, and im rooting for him ...BUT this better be good

Wow. Josh is a descendant of Count Basie! That was the most interesting part to me. My Dad was a huge Count Basie fan... I grew up on that music, and 'Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings' was like my fav album at 6 or 7 years old.

.

I have nothing against Josh, and if I met him we'd likely get along. HOWEVER, the idea of Prince just singing on top of someone else's tracks does bother me a bit, because, as a multi-instrumentalist musician and audio engineer myself, I love listening to (and identifying) Prince's tracks.

.

By Prince saying that Josh "alleviates" him to then be able to do other things, it sounds like the DIY Prince is gone. I'm still wondering if the rejection he got while trying to promote the '20ten' album to labels (and distribution) lowered his DIY esteem. He also got heavily bashed by his own fan base for both 'MPLsound' and '20ten'... both largely DIY albums.

.

Whatever the reasons behind it all, if we get more stuff along the lines of Hardrocklover it can't be a bad thing.

I think Prince is afraid to fail and to produce his own albums for the reasons u mention. It's possible that Free Urself is produced only by Prince but he chose to release Hitnrun instead since he knew how good response AOA got from the fans with Josh involvement in the album

I know what you mean, he seems like a nice person, btw, so does Hannah, that doesn't mean they aren't boring as hell and funkless though. I'm a little worried about what 'experimental' means to Josh....cuz house beats & dubstep isnt what I'd call experimental lolololol

I love the idea of Prince delving into dance - but I'd pick Francois K, Danny Krivit, Joe Clausell, Dennis Ferrer, Sydenham, Tiger Stripes, Black Coffee.....I could go on....those who are into this kind fo dance music know what I mean....

lol if you think prince cares about what anyone thinks. he's not affraid of anything and he didn't

make this album because he thinks that it's going to be a hit with scores and scores of younger

people. he's just being inspired by josh and the other people at paisley now so he made a whole

album with him.

you can bet there's another album finished composed arranged produced and performed by him

on his own. probably the Free Urself album.

then there's the second 3EG album and who knows he might still be tinkering with another NPG

album at this stage.

if anything he's inspired. i'm curious to see what will be released in the next 12 months from all

these sessions and this inspiration he's been getting.

should it prove to all be fluff, that's too bad. but for now i kind of like that he's changing things

up a bit.

The main vibe I get from these last couple of interviews is that Prince is bored, uninspired and is too lazy to record tracks of his own anymore.

I thought Prince done the RNR Remix 7 for some reason, and the Screwdriver Remix. Probably because of the Jamie Starr like voice he used in one of them.

Josh gives better interviews than Prince.

He's young, enthusiastic, has something to prove, and he talks about the music instead of whining about record companies/radio/modern musical tastes. I also get the impression he would be far more lively on TV interviews.

Has any other band member ever talked about the recording process before they left? Josh has been straight up about things, which makes a change. Unlike the girls, I don't get the impression he's walking on egg shells trying to say what he's been told to say. Sure, some of his comments about his boss lean towards the sycophantic, but if Prince was your boss, you'd do the same, anyone claiming otherwise has never worked for someone else.
