The Least Excited I've Ever Been for a New Prince Album

This is the least excited I've ever been for a new Prince album. Not sure why. I really like AOA. Perhaps I'm sick of Prince's antics. Perhaps I'm let down by AOA being so quickly forgotten. Perhaps it's the shit with Tidal. I don't know.

Where's your excitement level for HITNRUN? What's the least excited you've ever been for a new Prince album?

(Technically I think 20ten might beat HITNRUN for me...maybe. I didn't even track down a copy from eBay until 2012.)

Chaos and Disorder beacause I did not even know it was coming out until the day before. That was a pleasant surprise. 20Ten had very little anticipation. This does as well mainly because I know I cannot go out and buy it. Also let down from AOA and PE. Recently listened to both again and they did very little for me.

I'm really looking forward to it. Really like hardrocklover and also the new This Could b Us. I don't think I've ever not looked forward to a new Prince album since I first became a fan. I wouldn't say i'm excited though, I stopped being excited about new music/films/games a few years back now. But I will grab it at the first opportunity and play the hell out of it. Still playing AOA and I didn't even really like the early releases from that on first listen, so this one shows more promise for me.

RIP sad

I understand exactly what you mean. I have really mixed feelings. I still enjoy (very much) Prince's new music. In fact I have a playlist with some songs from AOA, from Plectrum and from the website that I listen to quite often. I love Hardrocklover and I'm pleasantly surprised by TCBU. But it's all such an effort... All I really want is to give Prince £10 for a new album and 99p for a new song. So why is it so hard?

I dont know why everyone is getting their knickers in a twist with this out of the blue release

I would imagine it was something put together pretty quick and like Prince said experimental so just be grateful he is putting the stuff out.

If he said he pulled this from the Vault in 1984 and remixed it everyone woudl have been wetting themselves

I'll always get Prince's albums no matter what but I'm not sure about Joshua Welton's production. I actually do like the sound of AOA but recently on songs like The X's Face and the new version of This Could be Us is a little underwhelming.

Something is missing. I feel like Prince needs to work outside of the Paisley Park silo. Maybe he needs to work with some other super producers. Someone like Mark Stent has a very particular sound and so does Prince so it would be interesting to see how the mash-up would work.

I have more than decent anticipation for HitnRun.

For me, the boredom factor was high after 3121. I still liked plenty of Prince tracks but 3121 was the one that made me keep my expectations in check. I can't even remember which came first, Planet Earth or MplsSound/LotusFlow3r? I'm not even sure how I got the tracks for 20TEN. My interest peaked briefly when I heard MPLSound was supposed to be inspired by old sound, but other than tha I was completely unexcited until RocknRollLoveAffair, which was only the beginning of a reawakened interest as my initial reaction was nothing enthusiastic.

Since then, I've had more anticipation as I thought 3eG was rejuvenating for him with tracks like the Reloaded songs, Screwdriver and Fixurlifeup. Like most of the Prince-friendly Org, I ended up not liking PLEL and loving AOA. Now it's wait and see, I've enjoyed Baltimore and Hardrocklover and the fact Hannah won't be singing is a plus.

So all in all, I'm cautiously prepared to be pleasantly surprised while still carefully considering I may just feel the opposite ultimately.

One thing I know for sure is that I'm still excited enough to write five paragraphs about this.

Uncanny!

KingSausage, I feel about the same.

Bored as hell and not excited that much. Like, Prince should remember how to make a video and promote stuff prior to releasing albums...

I don't let all the extraneous nonsense bother me, when the album hits hard format (which will happen according to recent interview), I will get it, and enjoy it, simple as that.

I'm looking forward to the album but I'm not that excited either, but that's cuz he hasn't released any mind blowing singles from the album so I don't know what to expect and cuz he once again makes it harder for me to get his new music. I had to hunt down This could be us remix so I could download it to my phone and laptop, I mean why should I be forced to use Tidal?

Teaming up w/the Weltons, Prince doubled down on having a "God Squad" production team.

IMO - Christian music is notorious for watered down flavor. I can't think of anything influential or widely acclaimed that's escaped that genre. The result is always an outdated pale imitation of something else (double ick).

In this case it seems Welton's co-opted Prince, as a genre, and he's watering it "Down.. Down.. Down"

I always adopt a wait and see attitude. I don't think there's been a whole album I didn't like. There's always a couple of songs I like. Most of AOA I enjoyed. I don't really have any expectations, so I don't get disappointed... lol

this one also cuts of in a very weird, jarring way, as if it just goes

straight into another song with a similar feel.

same thing goes for hardrocklover, which i'm pretty sure is not an

edit or anything but simply the album version so what's up with that?

is the whole album mixed together as one continuous mix?

Same here. Tired of the bs and the songs aren't all that interesting. I love AOA and still listen to it often. The last time it got bad was when he changed his name...he totally lost me for a couple years. It's not THAT bad...yet.

I'm with you - pretty high on the "meh" scale.

Maybe this is Prince's new plan - he's figured out a way to get expectations low this time so he can surprise us. Like a marketing Jedi mind trick.

I liked PARTS of AOA, not wild about it as a whole like you. The two affirmation segues and a very muddling middle section brought it all down for me. And the "until I...I find my...my way back home" refrain just grates on me for some reason. I'm also not wild about Josh's remixes/production style, but that's just me. I'm glad he's collaborating, but this one is just slightly outside my realm of interest.

Still opened to be surprised and will figure out a way to get the album. Definitely not joining Tidal over it. I think it's a waste of a method for an album release and that in general no one will care.

He lost me after shitty Planet Earth, shittier MPLSound, and difficult-to-obtain 20ten. I barely listened to Prince for about two years. I came back after I finally got 20ten in 2012, and really liked it. Then I got a shit-ton more boots (I had stopped collecting in early 00s). My Prince listening was all consuming for about a year after that. I drifted out again until last year, with the two new albums and all the great unreleased shit that was leaking left and right.

My current dissatisfaction all started with The X's Face. I still think that song sucks a chimp's ass dry.

I feel just like I do before any other Prince album release: When I get it, I get it.

With all due respect to Prince, I've been a fan long enough to know that nothing matters until I actually have the album. I'll get excited when I get it, but probably not before.

Completely agree... It's been a real hard time to be a Prince fan since 2007, after Planet Earth, Lotus which was just meh, MPLS was terrible, 20Ten wasn't good at all...

I just started listening again after AOA, but it was nothing special. Was just average compared to his other releases...

I like Ex's Face a lot, and also what I've heard of Shut This Down and Million Dollar Show. So I'm sorta excited about the album.

I'm not so sure about This-This-This-This-This Could Be Us-Us-Us-Us-Us, however.

yeah it's his antics that have killed the vibe for me. Plus he puts us through too many loop holes chasing around these different streaming services. I think he's doing it to educate us on all of the different stream sights available... The best thing I've heard in the past few months was the live soundcloud performance he made available that ended with his killer bass heavy "The Whole of the Moon"... with regards to HardRockLover--that got me excited!! But Stare and This Could Be Us remix have dampened my energy. I'm still obviously going to buy the album at a record tore but I think this too is the least excited I've ever been to buy a Prince album and I've been buying them day one starting with Graffiti Bridge (I didn't hear the Small Club Show until '88 which hooked me)

Good thread KingSausage!

hardly since. Hoping this one has more staying power cool.
