Purple Rain voted best song of the 80's

http://metro.co.uk/2015/08/24/princes-purple-rain-tops-poll-of-the-best-songs-of-the-1980s-5357948/#ixzz3jlxnS3EF

Prince’s hit song Purple Rain has been named the best song of the 1980s.

The classic track from the 1984 album of the same name topped the poll by indie website Pitchfork of the 200 best songs from that decade.

‘He wrote a brazen homily for the future of music, using a wistful guitar riff, floor-to-ceiling drums, dulcet swells of string and organ, and an indomitable two-word hook meant to be sung by a chorus, a room, an arena full of people,’ they explained.

They praised the song for its ‘sweltering guitar solo — so good it still moves people to tears — that brought the song into the upper echelon of stadium ballads’.

In second place was Michael Jackson’s Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ while N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton came third.

See the full list here.

Pitchfork's 15 best songs of the 1980s

1. Prince and the Revolution – Purple Rain
2. Michael Jackson – Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’
3. N.W.A’s – Straight Outta Compton
4. New Order – Blue Monday
5. Public Enemy – Fight the Power
6. Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)
7. Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
8. Talking Heads – Once in a Lifetime
9. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five – The Message
10. The Smiths – How Soon Is Now?
11. Prince and the Revolution – When Doves Cry
12. The Cure – Just Like Heaven
13. Michael Jackson – Billie Jean
14. The Smiths – There Is a Light That Never Goes Out
15. Sonic Youth – Teen Age Riot

"When Doves Cry" is a better song than "Purple Rain",which I find to be a very overrated song boxed

likewise,"Billie Jean" is a much better song than the noisy "Wanna Be Startin' Something" boxed

who voted in this crazy poll?! lol

I agree that Purple Rain isn't even the best song on its own album, much less the entire 80s.

Disagree wholeheartedly with that second opinion though. "Wanna Be Startin' Something" is the jam and besides, it's nice to see it get some love over the cliche choice of "Billie Jean", which many already consider to be one of if not the defining song of the decade and (one of) MJ's best song(s).

The #3 song tells me this wasn't "voted" on at all but we're already discussing this here:

Not denying the greatness that is "Billie Jean"; it definitely deserves the love it gets but it's nice seeing WBSS getting a bigger nod.

They are pissed off on the MJJ community and I had defend Prince aginst the chorus of Prince haters there. Still the MJ songs chosen are all off Thriller and where are the classics like Man in the Mirror, Bad, TWYMMF and Smooth Criminal?

Prince also appears at

WBSS it's a great song, really great the funky dynamic music and especially the angry lyrics the one that not much people pay attention at, just like Billie Jean everybody dance at but so few people pay attention at the sad and angry lyrics.
