I love when they tour at paisley park.I first saw this interview when I was 6.probably the first prince interview I ever seen.I don't remember too much about it other than prince saying the batman theme is the first song he learned to play on piano then played it,Prince saying once he got married all his girls stopped calling him ,and I laughed when Oprah was exercising to the emancipation album. For some reason,I think she was acting and didn't like the music

Creepiest interview....ever.

The fact that Mayte was barely in her 20s, had just lost their son Gregory, and then made to pretend like nothing was wrong made it all the more sad. Everything that came out of her mouth seemed to alarm Prince--his body and eye language while she spoke made her appear coached by him prior to the interview. Can you imagine what that poor girl went through?

Then the whole "it came to me in a dream" nonsense he fed to Oprah was just the icing on the cake.

The "sleep around" performance was odd.

I would have enjoyed this kind of interview during the "Lovesexy" Era.

This show focused more on the "celebrity" aspect of Prince and not the musician. I'm. more interested in the musician.

Was that the one that had the shitty special effects added to it? Kinda like the shitty grains and sephia tint on Jay lenos musicology irritated me. U ain't foolin' no one dumbass...we all know its still 2004. I apologize for my suspension of disbelief not being THAT effective.

We have to remember that at the time we weren't sure what happened to the baby. I can imagine P not wanting to go on screen saying bluntly "he's dead" especially when the whole promotion campaign for Emancipation was based on him being happy and free. It didn't come across as awkward to me back then, but I did feel he was playing a role. He is actually a pretty good actor and this interview was an act.
Some time later on the Today show he more or less admitted that the rumours were true.
"It happened for a reason" is what he said.

Creepy or not, I thought it was cool that he was on TV for 1 whole hour. Some of my friends gave me hell for his "float the boat" comment but I knew what he meant..Despite the controversy (no pun intended) he was on TV a lot during that time..I almost couldn't keep up with recording his apperances.

It does seem like that but you don't know how you'd react in the situation. People handle grief differently. I lost someone close to me and carried on as if nothing happened and went to work the next day. Needless to say it hit me later.

Should've been a redflag to all involved that this wasn't a healthy situation.

You are so right. I remember feeling bad for Mayte too, because If I'm correct, I remember her tearing up at one time, about to cry, and Prince shot her such a look, it even made me uncomfortable, let alone Mayte. I didn't believe anything they said in the interview, and I could tell that Oprah didn't either, because Oprah is very good at what she does, and I think she could read them well. You can just tell that Prince had complete control over Mayte, and what she was to say and not say. That's why I don't really believe Prince in interviews, because he's known for playing games with the media, and you don't know when he's telling the truth or not. You can tell that Prince is a very controlling person, and he controls everything around him, his band, his women, his employees, etc. Even when he's performing, and someone does something he doesn't like, he shoots them a look to kill. I've seen him do this on several occasions, like interviews, etc, and the people he shoots "the look" to, looks like they are scared to death afterwards.

Oh man, two things I really remember about this interview:

1) Prince busting out the theme to the "Batman" TV show, with that sly grin on his face.

2) Oprah raving about how she loved to work out to "Emancipation", and the clip of her in spandex on a treadmill with the title track playing in the background. It was so self-serving, and yet it looked so awkward and wrong. And, forgive me, but "Emancipation" is not work-out material. I mean, "Sleep Around" or "New World" or something with more energy.

I remember how phony Oprah "appeared" to be. Maybe it was just me. I also remember her asking could she hear just a little bit of "Purple Rain" while he was at the piano.

The baby's room was all done up for a black light. The whole genisis of his second life/personality was discussed. Skipper was made public. I remember he looked alarming short next to Oprah.

P had a long face the whole hour.

...except for when he was on stage.

The best line ever in a Prince interview has to be from the Rosie O'Donnel show when she was called him Taffy, and he says "you know what Taffy rhymes with dont ya?......... Good night!!"

I agree.I felt so bad for Prince and Mayte neutral They were going through a major tragedy and had to act as if everything was fine.I think Prince should have cancelled or postponed this interview.

You guys have obviously seen the video again thats out there, easily found. Won't post the link just in case it disappears.

To me, the music had lost its kick. The whole name change/marriage/fight with Sony era seemed to drain the magic touch right out of him. Gone. Just like that. He was popular and controversial, but his music was not. Funny how artists have a wave or surge of what feels right to the masses, touches the masses. And then poof....it's gone. Never to return. Not even to surpass the past. Strange happenings. Could have another surge. With bland artists/musicians like Legend now appealing to the masses, who knows what will resonate with folks. Just good music I suppose.

Genius is born, not made. Prince is a Genius. No question. RIP Legend.
