Happy Anniversary, Small Club!

Twenty-seven years young today!

Probably the greatest night any performer has ever had, in the entire history of performing. Or close to it!

Noone ever talks about DMSR, but that version is cool & crystal clear.

What more is there to say about "Just my imagination" except to say again it's his best recorded guitar solo.

The version of "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic" led me to believe the studio track was so much better than it proved to be.

Very good recording. Would be a good inclusion on a "Lovesexy" remaster set (as if that would ever happen)

Let's hear it for Small Club.

Not only did I listen to it a million times I made my own "edited" version to give to friends.

I know, it's practically a crime, but I knew my friends would not like something that starts with a long drum solo. I also made People Without start "right away" and, huh, "shaved" some tracks.

The Bonnie Boyer stuff was among my honey's favorites and it still is. If I had my way, I'd probably start the record with the Cold Sweat medley. Oh wait... I did have my way, I think my edited version started with that then went into track 2, cd 1.

In my defense, I was young(ish).

The "Just My Imagination" guitar solo has been my ringtone for years. I'm always tempted to just let it ring.

The 'Just My Imagination' guitar solo is what made me want to learn more about Prince to the point of changing my life at a seconds notice anytime Prince announces a show in the area, let alone I've been on the Org for years (this is like my 4th handle due to the moderators), have over a thousand boots and 2 paintings and I still can't get enough...

All due to the second I got my hands on Small Club back in the day! Great appreciation thread!!

Nope, I agree as well. The drums are slightly panned to the left and I just can t stand it!

There is very little to no difference between the sound quality of any version.

Still remember finding this gem on vinyl in an off beat record store in Marbella, right after seeing the Nude Tour concert in 1992. I had no idea that it was a bootleg. And the feeling when I got home from the vacation and got to put this under the needle, wow! Made me forget the Marbella concert imediately, this stuff was for real! Awesome and still the best.

Great performance and could have been a commercial release for Prince.

It would have sold better than many of his albums. Who's the fool holding this back, music should be free and this is one recording that desperately wants to get out of the Paisley cage!

Small Club is indeed all of that.

the idea that the REAL GOOD STUFF is saved for the lucky few that know and can get to the aftershow is just so rock and roll.

JMI is also top-notch, especially given the soundboard record quality.

But the solo is not THE BEST, at least IMO.

Roseland is the longest and most interesting as far as chops and variety, quality is so so.

Warfield is dreamy, slow and langorous, and has the best Noon Rendezvous outro.

Reseda has the best balance and tone, with nice length as well.

Camden has great audience participation and Mica.

i have come to think of all of them as one great solo and it humbles me everytime I think I am getting good on the guitar.

What are the song names and performance dates for these guitar solos you listed?

Thanks!

they are all just my imagination.

the performance dates are all clustered around the US leg of Lovesexy, you can look them up at the Vault.

the 3 US dates (Reseda, Roseland and SF) are all collected on Sabotage under Lovesexy, the aftershows.

Camden is Sabotage Gross Freiheit.

there are 2 or 3 more that are super obscure (one Minnesota cafe and a Paris date) out there, the knowlegable on this board will know locations and labels.

I always wondered to which extent it owes its cult classic status to the fact that it was the only soundboard aftershow (and one of the only shows at all) for years. Don't get me wrong it's an amazing performance and the absence of Eric gives it this very particular vibe, but the recent Munich leak could and probably would have become a similar cult-classic had it been out in 1988 instead.

I also would give a lot to hear the 1986 New Morning with a good sound quality. The circulating tape has the most awful sound.

^The answer to your question is: a LOT! And of course Prince was on the peak of his powers then, that also explains a lot. It was even played on Dutch radio. That wouldn't have happened with a lo-fi tape. Everything was right back then: the hype, the performance, the sound quality... Just like the Black Album, it opened people's ears that there was a whole world of Prince music that wasn't on the official records.

Here's a stupid commment, but has anyone ever thought of getting a petition together asking Prince if he would release some of these things??

There's been some threads asking for it IIRC, but honestly what good would it do? You can't petition for Prince releasing vault music any more than you can petition ME for, say, dressing like Ronald McDonald's every day for a year. You can't have someone doing what they don't want to do with a petition lol

And anyway, why petition for a release that we already have in such excellent quality?

I would rather petition for the '86 New Morning show as it is dire need of a high quality soundboard upgrade.
