What does the WB *REALLY* mean?

I know that when he resigned with WB, there was this hoopla about the PR remaster being released and that Prince was going to be releasing new music through WB.
And, we did get an album at the end of the year--a double album set.

But, obviously, no PR remaster yet. And, I'm not even sure what Prince is contractually obligated to do. He has his masters back, and I'm not even sure what that means for us.

Does anyone care to speculate on what's going on, and what Prince's obligations are at this point? It would kind of be cool to see album releases at the same rate as the 80s, but that's a pipe dream.

What pisses me off the most about the whole WB and Masters thing, is that he has faught and faught hard over the masters, and now that he's getting them back, he's doing nothing with them!

He couldve waited patiently for them over the 30 years or so needed to regain them. And had none of this SLAVE or O{+> bullshit that came with it.

Obviously there was no farken hurry. mad

Yeah I think he just wanted to own his masters and didn't intend to actually do anything with them... I'm hoping that Apple Music really takes off and the money is divided up by usage so if someone only listens to prince their $10 a month or 73% of it goes to Prince and for a teenager that listens to millions of songs it gets divided up between those artists... This is where streaming is heading (I was discussing this with a warmers exec the other day here in London) and if enough people get on board it would be worth Prince doing remasters for streaming also vinyl box sets would make him a lot of money right now as that market is the biggest it's been since the early 90's. I am a songwriter myself so I sure hope that Apple can turn streaming around..

I'm pretty sure Apple music subscriptions are already taking off. Their App store generates revenues beyond competitor apps stores, so much so that apps appear months to years on their platform before elsewhere.

The real question is if the adoption of streaming music compensates in any way for revenues lost from customers not paying for actual product. I'd rather own my own music than subscribe to a vast library of music, but its seems I'm in the minority these days.

What I do think that Apple, Spotify and even Tidal are doing that may be positive for the music industry is allowing DJs and artists to curate their music based on what turns their ear rather than what record execs tell today's radio Djs to spin. It might.... MIGHT... just break the monopoly the record companies have on content being consumed and turn that back over to the artists. The last time I saw music being influenced from non-record execs, it was when supposed alternative music in the late 80s toppled the vice-grip glam bands seemed to have on radio and video music airwaves.

Either way, the transition is currently in swing, and we'll see where it takes us. Through it all, you can count on Prince making really bad decisions.

This has been rehashed to death in dozens of threads neutral

Fact: P is still tied to WB for licencing all those albums he got the masters of, as such or in remastered form.

Speculation: This might even still be true for the whole of the 1978-1996 vault material that he couldn't touch without WB until now.

Speculation: In any case P is still pissed because basically having the masters back only gives him a higher share of the sales, but no freedom to rerelease/remaster that stuff any way he wants with anyone he wants, so Prince is playing the waiting game, trying to piss WB to death by not delivering any remasters or bonus material. Either Prince is contractually required to do so and he'll do it at the last possible minute, or he isn't and he's gonna play dead until WB releases him of any obligation.

The WB exec "fueled speculation" about remasters. Nothing was confirmed or announced. For the WB exec to hint at a PR remaster - perhaps Prince has agreed to this perhaps he was just trying to create some buzz.

They seemed content to release AOA. They blinked first and also released PE. But Prince had to fight to make it happen.

We don't know if Prince gets his masters for signing his name or upon delivering the final album in this X, Y or Z number of albums.

Also noteworthy is that Prince has been doing all sorts since the WB deal. So while he may be contracted to WB for X number of albums, he also appears to be completely free to do whatever he wants.

Exactly. Just like the excitement and momentum has died for the new album that the snippet "Stare" was aimed at promoting. PRince my start with "PR" but there aint no "PR" in Prince.

This surprised you how? LOOK AT WHAT HE DID TO HIS INDEPENDENT OUTPUT. How much of his post-WBR catalogue is still available? There's your answer.

Prince should call me and let me sort his sorry ass business affairs out for him. Its very simple. A website which sells his music, old and new, studio and live, in digital format. No stupid sign up fees. No cryptic passcodes to decipher. Just a plain and simple website with a shopping cart addon. And at only a 10% commission fee, Im cheaper than any label. So PM me Prince and lets get this ball rolling. smile

Yes, I think there a lot of people with some common sense that could run his affairs better then he can.

I'd do the same. website that sells his catalog, videos, etc, merch.

If he wants to promote an upcoming project, I'd tell him "you finish it and deliver it, and then we will talk about it and promote it." Never agaib would there be an aborted project.

I'd tell him that he has beilt up so much ill will with his business practices, that he will need to under-promise and over deliver on a very consistent basis for quite some time to make up for some of that.

"Preorder the new album that comes out on EXACTLY THIS DATE, and get two free bonus tracks. Then when the date comes..."oh by the way, those that preordered are getting 4 bonus tracks. those four tracks will be one sale here in 3 months for everyone else, but you got them first and for free."

"Hey everyone who has made a purchase here in the past 6 months, here's a free track"

"There's a new Blu Ray of this famous concert that everyone wants to see. It's two hours long, and releases on exactly THIS DATE."

"Here's the Blu Ray concert we promised, on time, resonable shipping costs too. Oh yeah, we put some extra stuff on there too, behind the scenes, highlights of the soundcheck, etc"

Do shit right, do a little extra, be on time, don't dissappoint, always deliver. <- key to success
