Prince's Biggest Hits?Truth or Dillusional Musician?

Prince always claims at his Concerts that he has sooooo many hits he would be "here" all night if he played them all? Is he lying to us? here is the official List of Prince's biggest hits:

Rank, Title, Hot 100 Peak Year, Position (Weeks Spent at No. 1)
1, "When Doves Cry," 1984, No. 1 (5)*
2, "Kiss," 1986, No. 1 (2)*
3, "Let's Go Crazy," 1984, No. 1 (2)
4, "Cream," 1991, No. 1 (2)**
5, "Batdance," 1989, No. 1 (1)
6, "Raspberry Beret," 1985, No. 2*
7, "U Got the Look," 1987, No. 2
8, "Purple Rain," 1984, No. 2*
9, "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World," 1994, No. 3
10, "Sign 'O' the Times," 1987, No. 3
11, "Little Red Corvette," 1983, No. 6
12, "Diamonds and Pearls," 1992, No. 3**
13, "Thieves in the Temple," 1990, No. 6
14, "Pop Life," 1985, No. 7*
15, "Delirious," 1983, No. 8
16, "I Would Die 4 U," 1985, No. 8*
17, "7," 1993, No. 7**
18, "Alphabet St.," 1988, No. 8
19, "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man," 1988, No. 10
20, "1999," 1983, No. 12
21, "I Wanna Be Your Lover," 1980, No. 11
22, "Partyman," 1989, No. 18
23, "Gett Off," 1991, No. 21**
24, "Mountains," 1986, No. 23*
25, "Take Me With You," 1985, No. 25***
26, "The Arms of Orion," 1989, No. 36****
27, "Money Don't Matter 2 Night," 1992, No. 23**
28, "I Hate U," 1995, No. 12
29, "LetItGo," 1994, No. 31
30, "America," 1985, No. 46*
31. "The Morning Papers," 1993, No. 44
32. "Anotherloverholenyohead," 1986, No. 63*
33. "Let's Pretend We're Married/Irresistible Bitch," 1984, No. 52*
34. "My Name Is Prince," 1992, No. 36**
35. "Hot Thing," 1988, No. 63
36. "Pink Cashmere," 1993, No. 50
37. "Controversy," 1981, No. 70
38. "Call My Name," 2004, No. 75
39. "The Greatest Romance Ever Sold," 2000, No. 63
40. "New Power Generation," 1990, No. 64

ALMOST 40% of the songs on this list NEVER gets played LIVE! Most that do are in desperate need of new arrangements (the horrific slowed down "lets go crazy" comes to mind). What songs from this list do you feel he should put in the setlist and/or get new arrangements of?

Say whatever you want, but that's pretty impressive list and if he were to play all of them live at full length, then his concerts would be 3-4 hours. Like Bruce Springsteen's. So it can be done. And with the exception of # 1, # 26 and # 38-40, I've heared ALL of those songs in concert.

You should also include hits that he wrote for other artists

That's cos he's got too many hits! :-p

And for me, the latest arrangement of Let's Go Crazy is the best he's done for decades. It's been crying out for a heavy interpretation for so long, rather than a pop song with horns.

You said "never". I admit his set list has gotten predictable, but I'm sure nine out of ten people who go and see him nowadays, aren't interested in an obscure track from the Come album or something like that. If you see The Rolling Stones these days, it is equally predictable. But what a legacy. I know Prince is careless about his legacy, but that's a different discussion. He does have too many hits to put in one concert, you can't deny that.

I'm not sure once you get past about 20 if the rest of the songs are really more relevant than other songs in his catalog. I'd certainly rather hear something like Joy in Repetition over The Greatest Romance.

I've wondered this too. I haven't watched any Prince tour vids for a while, but didn't The Nude Tour feature him performing mostly full-length hits? The Tokyo one where he's wearing a satin black jacket, I recall "Alphabet St.," "Kiss," and others being performed nearly fully. Maybe I'm wrong. But most of Prince's tours such as 1986 Parade Tour and 1988 Lovesexy Tour are heavier on the musicianship.. I haven't watched many '90s tour videos yet, are those full-length hits?

Maybe eye do, just not like eye did before pimp2

ALMOST 40% of the songs on this list NEVER gets played LIVE! Most that do are in desperate need of new arrangements (the horrific slowed down "lets go crazy" comes to mind). What songs from this list do you feel he should put in the setlist and/or get new arrangements of?

The concert would be 5 or 6 hours long and no one is going to pay
Big money to sit at a 6 hour concert and listen to songs they are not familiar with He really does have too many songs so he narrowed it down to the most popular You know it is caLed show business no good business sense no show. How many times has this been discussed on this board? Trust me if people don't like the set list they will stop going to shows but is doubtful since I do not see other legacy artist suffering low tickets.

Prince has a couple of hits I'd never want to hear outside of the sampler set. "Kiss", "Cream". Without exception these are horrible live. The sampler set was the best thing to happen to these kind of songs. The live medleys had become a bit too vegas sounding.

Prince also has other hits that didnt chart well, but overtime have become more popular than songs that charted. Songs like Erotic City, How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore, Adore, and If I Was Your Girlfriend just to name a few. Prince has a lot of hits!!!

I think the term hit can have multiple meanings. In terms of Prince's catalog a hit can be those singles that charted well, songs that are well known by the general public, or songs that are well liked by most of his general fan base.

Totally agree. It's a great version which works well live. Better than that 'go go go,go go go' crap that he played for sooooo long. He should have opened PlectrumElectrum with this. If he added Screwdriver, Rock & Roll Love Affair & something like HardRockLover instead of crap like Boytrouble it would've been a fantastic album!!

I'm among those who'd rather have Prince focus his shows on the latest albums and rarities from his past catalogue and only play a few hits every concert. Prince said in an interview that it wouldn't work but it did seem to work pretty well in 2002, so well in fact that he released no less than four albums from that tour.

"Sexy MF" was an international hit, but it's not on your list, but you've included songs like "Call My Name"

Equally songs like "The Beautiful Ones", "Gold" "Betcha By Golly" "The Holy River", "Sexy Dancer" "Let's Work".

It's your thread... are you talking about top 10 hits, top 20 hits, top 40? Or "hit" as in songs the general public are likely to know? or "hits" among fans?
