I FINALLY got to format this song right proper and blast it in my car and it's fucking great.

I hope the whole album sounds like this. It's deceptively simple but throws a lot of odd tricks into the basic structure (distroted voice, time changes), which Prince used to do all the time (When Doves Cry, Something in the Water, Lady Cab Driver) but this feels a bit more organic and the guitar really shines.

Could not agree more! It's a really excellent song and has all the twists and turns we've come to love and expect from P! It's always stuck in my head and I get excited every time I play it!

Let's hope the new experimental album is a lot like this! headbang

Dunno what it is but it helps me to get our nine month old Jimmy to sleep when I rock him to this tune... really unexpected as well, could be the contrast between the heavy and then gentler bits. Either way Jim gives it 10 out of 10!! His dad thinks its a good 8 out of 10, just wish the final solo was longer!

This song needs a 10 minute treatment.

I hope he plans on releasing a longer version.

In the old days there was more effort put into longer versions which often times lead 2 remixes and extended versions.

These days? No so much.

he just doesn't make single edits anymore. if he releases something it's taken straight from

the 'album' it's on.

hardrocklover obviously segues or flows into another song, judging from how it cuts off.

in the past he would have made sure that for the single version it ended better and wouldn't

cut off in such a 'weird' way.

these days he doesn't seem to care.

He made longer versions and different mixes for Rock'n'Roll Love Afair and Screwdriver. Remember those?

well yes, i do remember those. and you might recall that they were actual singles,

released in physical format by Purple Music. so he did some more work on them.
same thing with Breakfast Can Wait. nice remixes and neat little EP. all great cuts.

plus, all those songs already end very natural and 'right', they don't just cut off,

not even album track Breakfast Can Wait.

my point is that these songs he throws out there as 'singles', only online, he just

doesn't care about edits. i can sort of understand why, don't get me wrong. but it

feels weird to listen to a song and know that it's cut off is where another songs on

the album flows from it directly. it's most obvious on hardrocklover, but it's also a

bit annoying on Stare, which just ends and doesn't even have a second of silence

to spare at the end. the last 10 seconds of such songs you feel as if a door is just

about to slam shut and he has to squeeze another 15 seconds into it, really.

well look at this, all these superfluous words without meaning. instead of prince

editing his singles i should edit my responses. there would be a point ot a nicely

edited single, there's usually no point to these kind of posts. so sorry for that biggrin

Because "Prince". I'm still waiting for the extended version of "In This Bed I Scream" since I love that outro.

That's...umm...actually not a bad comparison. At first I sort of shrugged it off but the way the tempo builds and the simple nature of the song structure got me to thinking "yeah, I can sort of see the comparison."
Good comparison actually, except I like this song way better.

What is the song that the main guitar part sound like? And did he make it similar on purpose?

Right after "make this woman scream" is this melodic guitar section that is effectively the "chorus" of the song. It sounds like some other song that I just can't place. It might be a 60s pop-rock song or perhaps something that's played at sporting events a lot.

Help!

Ah, I can answer my own question. It sounds like the Florida State and Atlanta Braves fight/tomohawk songs.

On purpose? Probably not. At least I can't think of a reason.

I guess I'm not the only one who thought that. First thing I thought of when I first heard the song.

The beginning opening lyric is It's nothing for the RECORD not the (Rocker)

Great song... for the lyrics heres my 2 cents

although its very hard to hear what he says in the beginning, nothing for the rocker or record , have to wait for prince to clear it up

for these lyrics i hear this and have always heard this..

Hey there, people! Been a long time since I've posted here, but I gotta tell ya... This is probably the first Prince song in a long time that I have actually purchased for download. I love the fact that he is having fun again. It's been too long. Once I get to really discect it, and give it a good listen, I will be more than willing to give more opinions on it. So far, I like it.

And what do you think of it? To me, it's very distracting, kind of annoying. If I never heard those songs before, I'd probably enjoy HRL more. It's still a pretty cool song.

i've been listening on my headphones. over and over and over. i don't think i've stuck with a new
prince song this intensely since "lotusflower". and it doesn't get old, it just keeps on getting a bit

better. i seriously love this track.

I've listened to this song for a couple of weeks and really guys, it's awe inspiring.

That guitar gets me, and his vocals - 100% Prince, close and personal.

The structure of the song goes well beyond the verse chorus thing and the delivery drives the point home.
