This quote made me pick up Prince's music

You maybe remembered the Batman hype and Prince's involvement in that huge success. But this cultural movement in the same year is what made me really interrested in what Prince really was. "He's naming Prince together with my two favorite MC's KRS One and BDK? Who is this guy?! Is he respected in the hip hop community? I must listen to his albums" This were my thoughts exactly. And to be honest, this movie was as important or even more so than Batman. He was involved in what could have been an american revolution. That's really cool.

I think it's really cool that Spike included Prince in this list. But would some please explain a short bit who some of those folks are? Who's Sugar Bear for instance? And why was some of the names especially relevant back in 1989? I was too young back then, but I find that era (1988-1991-ish) really interresting.

Fred Wesley was one of James Brown's horn players, and later played with Parliament-Funkadelic.

-

Mtume was a funk group in the late 70s/early 80s, famous for the song "Juicy Fruit"; IIRC, the main guy from Mtume (his name is "something" Mtume) also did the music for the FOX TV show "New York Undercover" in the 90s

-

Steel Pulse is one of the greatest reggae bands ever; the one song that comes to mind is "Roller Skates"

-

As for the other underlined folks...got me...

Make it so, Number One...

Thanks.. I just checked out Steel Pulse on Youtube, because their name sounds familiar, but I don't recognize anything from them. Juicy Fruit is one of those songs Ive known since I was a kid, but I never even bothered to find out who sang it. Fred Wesley has some funky stuff out there. I need to look at his catelog a little closer.

Definitely check FW out. Like UncleJam said, you'll find him all over James Brown & Parliament records. Also check out the Horny Horns albums & anything by The JBs. wink

Marcus Miller did a damn good cover of "Higher Ground". If you haven't heard it, check it out. It's on the YouTubes

Marcus Miller was Miles Davis' main collaborator in the 1980s.

Mtume, in addition to having had some R&B / pop hits on his own, was Miles' percussionist in the 1970s. He's hosted a radio show and is respected for his views on music and social issues.

On his 2005 album Silver Rain, Marcus does a cover of Girls & Boys feat. Macy Gray on vocals... wink
