Prince and Texas....

So I know he has done SXSW private shows twice but it feels like ages since he has brought a tour through Texas. Am I totally wrong about that or does it seems like he skips over us a bit? All of the travel to see him gets tiresome.

Who do I have to call to get a hit and run sent my way?!

Prince owns/owned several properties here in Texas, including a ranch. Not sure why he doesn't come through here more often.

He owns/owned a ranch in Waller (northwest of Houston). A friend of mine from there told me this out of the blue back in 2000 or so. Said Prince didn't run cattle, just grew hay. Said the gates to the ranch had an ornate "PP" on them. I verified this with someone else I know from Waller, who is with the county government. I guarantee you this is true. My first friend said Prince liked going to the ranch because no one knew who he was.

He also allegedly owned a house on Clear Lake, which is just south of Houston. Ironically, this house is four doors down from my parent's old house, but Prince didn't buy it until after both my parents were deceased. He bought it in 2007. This information comes from a neighbor, who was a friend of my parents and was the Homeowners Association president. I'm fairly confident his information was good.

This house is either next to, or one house away from, a house Beyonce bought for her mother. That house used to be owned by author Judith McNaught, and it's spectacular. I drove down there one day to see if Prince was around. Unfortunately, Prince has never been seen down here. And trust me - if he showed up, I'd know. But either he bought the house for an investment and never comes down here, or he bought and sold it real quick, or maybe he never actually owned that home.

So one confirmed property down here, and one that is fairly well certain. But no Prince sightings, dang it. I keep hoping he'll show up at one of the open mic nights I play in!

Insert that photo of Prince on the Muppet Show here (w/cowboy hat). Makes a lot of sense now - the corny spaghetti western sound of "Right the Wrong". Wasn't there a quote in the 90s where he mused/threatened about making a country album?

Intersting. I just did a search through the tax records online for that county and I'm not coming up with anything. I wonder if he had it listed under a company name or something? I do know that he LOVES Houston. I think he has always had an appreciation for H-town because they were good to him when he was getting established.

I went to the 1997/98 Houston New Year's show and after show. That night he said he was recording us for the NPS album. The song was "Play that Funky Music". You can hear the audience on that track so I am still convinced I am on that track. The after show was amazing. I think it was called The Ritz and he played until 5am. Mostly Sly covers but it was worth it. Saw Mayte up close too and that was extremely worth it. In fact that is the main thing I remember about that night.

My second source on Waller is a government official there, and he told me the ranch ownership went through several corporations. But he confirmed it was Prince.

Neither one of my Waller ranch sources are Prince fans. They are both 60-ish country people.

Hey, Clear Lake is awesome! Best body of water in Texas, IMO. It's got it all - sailing, yachting, power boats, the Kemah Boardwalk, Galveston Bay, multiple yacht clubs, etc. And where Prince allegedly owns a house is on the south side of the lake. I'm not going to divulge the neighborhood out of respect for privacy, but it's gated so he'd not have to worry about gawkers.

I know the address of the house and I looked it up on the tax records but there was no way to tell if the listed ownership entity was Prince-controlled. Which isn't surprising, given what my Waller friends told me.

HOWEVER, Prince has never been seen in Clear Lake. I'm pretty sure that I'd know it if he ever went out. So even though my Clear Lake source is almost certainly unimpeachable, I'm thinking that if Prince owns that house, he's never been there.

Sure wish he'd come, though!

It's quite possible he is just making investments, (like he instructs in "Prince and the Band" razz", with no personal attachment. But what is the value of houses in Clear Lake? I wouldn't think it's the same thing as the crazy price hikes in the middel of Houston which are great if you bought property or land a while back.
