I think the Batman album is fine. But it can barely hold a candle to Sign O the Times or Lovesexy. Its reputation is made even worse as it's the clearest moment to point to as the end of Prince's 'classic era'. Batman is Prince's first disappointing album in a string of absolute gems. After Batman it took ages for Prince to really find himself again musically. Some would say he never did.

^ thats the socalled "negative mantra" isn't it..? wink

I personally love the big and succesful singles from D&P and the prince Symbol album (1991-1992),

AND also the 1993-1995 era was phenomenal, especially with Come and The Gold Experince.

After THAT I somehow agree that Prince's career took a nosedive, (talking albums).

This.

.

P still had it in him until the release of Emancipation.

.

After that it was all R&B. THIS is what caused the nosedive. mad mad

For me this is in my top 10 Prince albums. At the time this came out I was losing interest in Prince. Parade, Sign o the times and Lovesexy were misses for me and I was mostly listening to other artists. Batman brought me back as I liked every song and wore this album out!! I remember playing nintendo back then and this was the album I would always listen to when I did that. It setup the peak years for me as a Prince fan going into the 90s where from 89-97 he could do no wrong for my personal music tastes.

Nope. There are some gems on BATMAN.

The Scandalous Sex Suite (in it's entirety) is still my #1 go-to to showcase Prince' versatility. Time to cue it up. Awesome.

I enjoy it, especially with some outtakes mixed

I was another wtf when I noticed Sheila E Boni Boyer & Cat were not around (and Eric & Atlanta Bliss)

another band change I wasn't happy with

But it would have been cool if he toured with the SNL lineup

and continued with that darker gemini them... But he was on to the light via Graffiti Bridge

Batdance, Trust, Vickie Waiting, Scandelous are my favorites + 200 Balloons

If Parade, SOTT and Lovesexy were misses, then this person was the demographic that Prince was "testing" with ATWIAD.

It might leak one day. I've only seen parts of what I've been told was Burton's "favourite cut" of the film.

See this is what I mean in my exchanges with KoolEaze and SoulAlive above. If Burton's alleged favourite cut had even more Prince, and even the theatrical cut had two fairly high profile scenes with Trust and Partyman. That seems to contradict these later interviews that he wasn't that happy with Prince's involvement. confused

Burton made those comments in this 1992 Rolling Stone magazine interview...

The Tim Burton Collective... Interview

Rolling Stone:The other thing in the first one that felt horribly intrusive was the Prince music. We're in this Tim Burton world, and all of a sudden, like him or not, in rides Prince.

Tim Burton:Yeah, it's true. It's the unholy alliance of me and . . .

Rolling Stone: Warner Bros. marketing, pure and simple?

Tim Burton: This is what happened. You learn something new every day. Now, here is a guy, Prince, who was one of my favorites. I had just gone to see two of his concerts in London, and I felt they were like the best concerts I'd ever seen. Okay. So. They're saying to me, these record guys, it needs this and that, and they give you this whole thing about it's an expensive movie so you need it. And what happens is, you get engaged in this world, and then there's no way out. There's too much money. There's this guy you respect and is good and has got this thing going. It got to a point where there was no turning back. And I don't want to get into that situation again.

Rolling Stone: It had to be painful for you to put that music into that movie.

It was . . . it was . . . it completely lost me. And it tainted something that I don't want to taint. Which is how you feel about an artist. And actually, I liked his album. I wish I could listen to it without the feel of what had happened.

Some of the scenes in that Batman movie are lifeless.I think Prince's music would have livened things up a bit.

The movie is damn near perfect. The music is damn near perfect. Batman and Prince's music and the merchandise and the videos and the mania and the fucking mania was a pop culture tsunami. Nothing else like it in the past 30 years. It rocked my fucking world. I went to school thinking about Batman. I went to bed thinking about Batman. I ate and shit thinking about Batman. Fuck yeah, Batman!

For us P fans, yes this is true.

But for Tim, having a up beat TRUST or PARTYMAN playing in the background, probably wasn't what he was after. Batman is the Dark Night after all. wink

I totally agree. It's like when perfect worlds collide.

I still love everything about that combination. The Prince/Batman posters are still up on my wall. cool

Had a similar experience when Duran Duran played in View To A Kill.

Prince and Tim are similar artists. Similar in the respect that they are like islands who have limited and few docking abilities. They're artists with very solid and individualized voices and who have a set palate of colors they are able to turn into almost anything. For the public, this kind of combo is almost solely intriguing, for these kinds of artists dont combine with each other often..... but for the artists....entirely frightning, horriffic, scary as hell. Not what you want, if successful or not. I applaud them both for making it work so splendidly for audiences...but I completely respect the apprehensions both had in regards to the projects combining...or at least of letting princes be born of Tims.

I have always loved the Batman era of Prince. I still listen to the album quite often. Electric Chair and Scandalous were may favorite songs on the album.

Batman, the Prince soundtrack, and Danny Elfman's orchestral score of the film were some of the biggest hits of the summer of 1989.

I did not realize there was such a debate on what defines the classic era of Prince's music on the org.

I tend to think the classic era ends with Graffiti Bridge. Most of that music was recorded during the classic era anyway. And in some ways Graffiti Bridge was a sequel and an ending to the story began in Purple Rain. And an end to that story line professionally and I guess somewhat personally.

I remember reading a story about Prince around the late 1989- early 1990 time frame where Prince's drum machine was left in one of the hallways of Paisley Park. Prince was moving on from that Linn Drum Machine sound that had so defined much of Prince's music and Prince's was moving on to a live drummer for his percussion.

So maybe the real end of the first phase of Prince's evolution was abandoning the drum machine and hiring Michael Bland as his drummer.

D&P thru to Emancipation would be phase two for me and even without a hit movie those years were some amazing musical years for Prince and us. Iconic times. The prince era and the early days of the internet. Great times.

What's strange is although The Rainbow Children, Parade and Lovesexy are my favorite Prince albums of all time I find myself listening to the Batman soundtrack more often. It's just a perfect pop album, accessible as all get out.

I never understood the hate for this lp. It's great. Batdance is entirely new to pop music. The only mediocre song is arms of orion. Most of the music is played in the movie. What's not to like?
