The Arms of Orion

Any love for this song? I never understood the negativity towards this musical gem.

I've never understood why this song is so hated too. I like it, it's not really one I skip a lot.

It's a little cheesy, but so is a lot of the stuff that I groove to. LOVE IT!

A masterpiece. One of my favorite Prince ballads of all time, a sweet and catchy love song with amazing vocals and a classic ending. @org... fight me cool

I love Arms of Orion. To me the Arms of Orion are a reminder to lovers far from each other that their love will sustain them no matter how far away they are. "I'm drowning in a sea of tranquility" means that even though this separation is killing me I will be okay. The music may be sappy but the lyrics aren't. Having served in the military and been away from my loved ones I really connect with this song. Arms of Orion 4 life son! I love Lemon Crush as well, not one bad song on this album. Trust and Scandalous are the best songs here for sure. I have it ranked 17th best Prince album of all time.
Score:8/10

Perfectly fine ballad, bit cheesy for prince, but would probably be a number 1 hit for someone like Mariah or Celine
We're here, might as well get into it.

The lyrics are terrible. The music doesn't bother me, but the lyrics can eat a dick. Lyrically it's only slightly less cheesy than Grafitti Bridge the song. There are actually people out there who think Grafitti Bridge is a good song, so whatever floats your boat.

I have a question for KCOOLMUZIQ: Is there anything Prince has ever done/written that you do NOT like? It doesn't seem like it.

Agreed. It's beautiful, musically, vocally, and lyrically. It may sound 'Disney', but I like how he went out and did something a little different than what he usually does. I've heard both this song and the classic B-Side "I Love U in Me" were inspired by Richard Marx... not sure if it's true though.

I was always baffled why this song never had a video. Regardless of what orgers think about it, the song had a lot of commercial appeal and deserved a video if it was already a single. A relatively simple video with him and Sheena singing the song on a stage to each other... he was sexy as hell in 1989 with the long hair so the video would have worked lol. Some of his best singles never had videos.

They played it ALL the time on the quiet storm stations. So it did pretty well, despite what others say on here.

Interestingly,Sheena Easton wrote all the lyrics. She presented the lyrics to Prince and he created the music.

True! But prince had already done 3 videos 4 the MEGA successful Batman project. U know how he gets bored with an album quickly. "Purple Rain" could have been more successful than "Thriller"! If prince would'have agreed to three more singles & a world tour.

Mj would have been pissed... biggrin

Recently saw Sheena in an episode of Highlander with Adrian Paul, on the Horror channel. So many cool people have guest starred in that TV series including Vanity, Joan Jett, Martin Kemp and Traci Lords. Sheena should have done some more acting. I also saw her in an episode of the Outer Limits where she played a singer. It was a standout performance.

You don't understand the negativity?

When 2 R in Love got close with its flirting with syrup and marshmallows. But it was only flirting, never actually poured the whole bottle -- just a dash here and there.

But with Arms of Orion, not only did the whole bottle of Aunt Jemimah gOt poured, along with miniature, multi-coloured mini-marshmallows, but then Prince just had to open a bottle of liquid chocolate to pour it all over the song -- along with shavings of frozen honey + assorted licorice and jellybeans.

It's the first Prince song where you can really muse about a warning for the diabetics. Heaps of sugar drowned in syrups of various kinds and half a candy store -- stuffed into a blender... and served.

This is why the Arms of Orion sucks.

it does -- it really does -- and always will- SUCK.

lol

You know a song sucks when Aerogram attacks it. That's not meant as a diss on the net; it's just a reflection of your general positivity.

Arms of Orion is a very competent, slick, 1980's cheesedick ballad. It's well done, but I think it's hands down the worst, weakest, most pedestrian song released by Prince in the entire decade. Fuck that song. Sea of Tranquility? Yeah, I'll give that song a moon alright. A big pale white shining moon.

Good point. I guess it's easier to envision a music video in your head and wonder why it wasn't made than to actually spend money making one lol

But personally, I think it deserved one in place of Scandalous. I LOVE that song, especially the full suite, but it didn't need a video because it had very little chart potential (outside of the R&B chart). Orion deserved the video, imo. But oh well.

I don't really know about Prince outselling MJ, though. If extremely marketable albums with amazing promotion and multiple singles like half of Madonna and Mariah Carey's records, as well as huge albums by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zep, and Garth Brooks ALL weren't able to outsell Thriller or even really get close, then Prince with his shenanigans, shitty promotion, and questionable choices wouldn't even come close lol

BUT, if he participated in WATW (which in turn wouldn't have made his rep take a nosedive), and milked Purple Rain's music and hype until at least 1986, I think it might have sold an additional 10 million.
