Musicology/3121/Planet Earth

I was listening to the Peach & Black Podcast where they reviewed Planet Earth today and they made a good point: if Prince would have picked the best songs from these 3 album and made it one release it would've been one of his top four best releases ever. So I made a list of my four favorite songs from each album and made a tracklist.

1. Planet Earth

2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance

3. Musicology

4. Black Sweat

5. The One U Wanna C

6. Fury

7. Mr. Goodnight

8. If I Was the Man In Your Life

9. Somewhre Here on Earth

10. Love

11. The Word

12. Dear Mr. Man

What do you guys think?

I think you have a point, but you've left most of my favourite songs out (Reflection, Call My Name, 3121, Future Baby Mamma, All the Midnights in the World) and chosen some of the ones I always skip (ICPC, if I Was...)

The problem is we will NEVER agree on a configuration...LOL. for example, most people don't like the tune "All the Midnites in the World" but I love it. I think 3121 is without a doubt the strongest of the bunch. Musicology and Planet Earth both have some good tracks. It was a good time for Prince. He was more accessible and made a string of decent/good/very good albums.

I think you can say that about every era "the 80s, 90s..." Prince could have had some really killer Albums, if you put the best tracks from an era from each album and put it a one.
He always quantity over quality!

You are absolutely right. Some people love the Chaos & Disorder album and I hate it, some hate MPLSounds and I think it's flawless. We should stop doing this to Prince. But I can't help it.

Oh wow. That's an old show! I think that was our second ever episode. I can't even remember what I said anymore. I think my views would be a little more negative about that album now... though it's still not a bad album. Obviously when we recorded this, Lotusflow3r, MPLSound, 20ten and AOA were non-existent. Back then I thought Planet Earth fit nicely into a 'trio' of albums with Musicology and 3121... But now I can see that Planet Earth is probably more in line with Lotusflow3r.

Imo:

1. Planet Earth (without the salsa-part)

2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance

3. Musicology

4. Black Sweat

5. The One U Wanna C

6. A Million Days

7. Call My Name

8. What Do U Want Me 2 Do?

9. Future Baby Mama

10. Love

11. The Word

12. 3121*

*) a different version/ more edgy/ maybe a live-version, the released album version is weak, I really don't like the production on the 3121 title track.

Thank you guys so much for your podcast. It is the only one that I listen to. I plan on listening to all of them. It would be great to be on one especially to combat the one who said that Boom was one of Prince's greatest songs ever. That's insanity! Keep up the good work. I'm rediscovering the genius of MPLSound because of you guys. Another reason to love Australia.

I agree, although individually none of the songs may be as strong as say I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man or When Doves Cry, there is some terrefic material on those records.

It's the 3 disc into 1 disc Emancipation thread in disguise! Nobody's 1 disc lists will match and they certainly won't bear any resemblance to a single disc which Prince might have put out.

Musicology

Call My Name

3121

Fury

The Word

The Dance

Planet Earth
Guitar

The One U Wanna C

All The Midnights In The World

Lion Of Judah

Resolution

Bonus track - PFUNK

Let the firing squad begin on this one... But FURY is the best track Prince has made out of all these 3 albums...

Not my opinion... Just is.

I think Musicology is perfect just how it is, start to finish.

I genuinely can't think of a single song from 3121 that I would miss if I never heard it again. I suppose the title track is kind of cool and Te Amo Corazon is pleasant easy listening music, but the rest of it leaves me cold.

Musicology was fun in places and had some cool tracks, but nothing to right home about. IMO Planet Earth is by far and away the strongest of the three and marked a significant improvement in Prince's standard of songwriting. Songs like The One U Wanna C and the title track are brilliant examples of Prince's ear for insanely catchy and epic pop-rock songs. And All The Midnights In The World sounds more heartfelt than anything on 3121 or Musicology.

Just replace Future Baby Mama and Mr Goodnight with What Do U Want Me 2 Do and Musicology and it'd Prince's strongest work since Emancipation.
