Kevin Smith Vs. Prince

Eye no everyone has heard this story told by the great story-teller Kevin Smith. Eye'd give anything 2 watch that documentary! But eye guess the 30 minute clip on An Evening With Kevin Smith is the next best thing. But what eye wanna know is; has Kevin Smith or Prince talked publicly about this since An Evening with Kevin Smith? Eye really think it's interesting and funny as hell. And what do U think about this topic? Who was being the real jerk here? Kevin Smith or Prince? In a way Prince was the true a-hole in the but U have 2 give credit 2 him; that was awesome.

Prince and Kevin Smith were jerks to each other if what Kevin Smith said was true. Neither of them came out looking good.

Prince wouldn't acknowledge this publicly because it's something that shatters his illusion. He lives in Oz and he doesn't like anyone stepping behind the curtain.

.

No one is a jerk here - Kevin Smith was employed to do a job, his experiences on that job are peculiar enough to merit discussion, he isn't the first person to walk away from Princeland wondering what the fuck just happened. Unless someone leaks the footage, I doubt we'll ever see it because I imagine Prince would rather keep it under wraps - a) because it's in the past and he's "in the now, looking forward" yadda, yadda and b) it probably shows him at his Jim Jones worst.

You do know there's a follow-up DVD to An Evening With, right?

The 3EG girls were talking plenty of cult-like shit in their interviews last year, about how they always had these long talks and "discussions". Seemed to me the intention was that they'd get schooled by Prince in the "truth", and thus you get all that creepy slut-shaming.

.

Michael B et al also used to tell how they were required to be vegan and how they all went to McDo or a ribs place behind Prince's back whenever they had the opportunity.

I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan. I've seen every one of his movies except the recent horror one he did, Tusk. I'm not really interested in seeing that, his strengths are in stoner comedy. And I have his DVD's and three of his books, one of them signed by him. I must have seen Clerks at least 20 times.

All that said, I find his Prince story to be completely distasteful and highly unprofessional on Kevin's part. He chose to take that job, he deliberately avoided signing the required NDA, and then he went round universities, charging a fee no less, and making fun of someone who employed him for a job, then filmed one of them for a DVD release and made even more money out of it. Sure, the Prince story isn't the only story on that DVD but it's a significant portion of it.

Everyone has their methods, and any decent comedy writer (which Smith it) can twist, manipulate and exaggerate their anecdotes for comic effect. I'm sure anyone who has ever worked on a Kevin Smith movie could do the same thing to him, and I'm sure he wouldn't like it.

Unprofessional as fuck.

That said I can't wait for Clerks 3! cool

If this is about what happen when Prince hired Smith to film at the 2001 Celebration? He wasnt all that negative about it. He was just telling how friggin' wierd P was then and I'm 100% certain its all exactly how it went down.

I was at that event and spoke for a few minutes with Kevin. Strangest day ever and Kevin was super awesome and tried to make sense of all the chaos.

Would kill to see that footage. Fairly certain I'm in it when we had the TRC listening session.

yeahthat Plus, the story if fuggin hilarious!!

Look, based on the story told, I can't blame him and am in fact happy he didn't sign the NDA and happy he shared the story. Why shouldn't he be able to tell it? It's the funniest anecdote on any of his Evening With dvds (what are there, 4 of them now?).

Why should he not talk about it? Why would Prince care? Why would Prince fans be mad about it?

I love Kevin Smith as well. I have seen all of his movies (even Tusk) and have one of his books. We also watch his show Comic Book Men and follow him on Facebook.

.

Having said that - and since you have all of his books - you probably remember the very significant portion about Kevin working with Bruce Willis on Cop Out. Kevin's book, to me, became more of a tell-all on Bruce Willis than a Kevin Smith biography.

.

Basically, it's the same formula: Kevin is excited to work with a childhood idol, then when it's not what he had envisioned he goes public and slams that person (and profits off of it).

I attended a Q&A with Kevin Smith last month, and I was all ready to go with a question about the Prince material and if he'd every made any attempt to recover the footage or had any further contact with Prince's camp about it. Alas, I never got picked to ask a question.

You're a huge KS fan, yet you haven't noticed that HE DOES THIS WITH ALL KINDS OF CELEBS?

Sheesh, dude has always been very open and honest about shit, even about his dealings with some execs.

But it's the Prince story where he's suddenly being unprofessional?

I stopped being a Kevin Smith fan after this actually....I've worked for/with alot of celebrities and that was so unprofessional I couldn't believe it. I can't imagine talking about any one of my clients that way, even if it WAS a horrible experience. It's bound to leave a bad taste in the next clients mouth, like 'will this guy do me like that?'.

Bad bad form.

Bad things happen in business DAILY, I'm sorry its still immature and unprofessional. There ARE ways to get your money. The professional way to go about things is to get your money PROFESSIONALLY, not trash talk someone for 300 years.

Also just because someone treats you badly doesnt mean you do the same in return, again, unprofessional, and, immature.

When working with people like Prince, the answer is always YES and you do what you have to do to get the job done. Period. Thats the story with working with clients like Prince.

People that attain a certain level of power fame and money don't do it by being collaborative types, they dont care about your feelings, or 'you' at all...and when working for them it's their feelings that matter. FIRST and foremost. Thats the life at that level. It's not a corprate environment, if you dont get that you shouldn't be involved with these kinds of people in that capacity.

I've learned that when you go into a situation with your business presented properly - you get treated in kind. If you handle your buisness in a way that is less organized or not represented properly with paperwork and agreements, you get hosed for your pay.

People will screw you if they can, because they can. Handlig your business professionally goes a long way to making ure you're not treated that way and it gives you recourse should things go south.

I talked to Kevin's wife about this and was kind of apologetic (she knows I'm a huge P fan) that he had to work all that overtime on father's day & she said actually, he was nice to her and she remembered having a good time.

Kevin Smith had a bad time at Paisley Park and Prince was a dick to him.

On the other hand, when all is said and done, Kevin Smith was a minor figure long ago, and Prince was a major figure long ago. What history will retain is that this moderately successful director had a bad time working with an essential figure of music history.

The End.

It wasn't a job. He wasn't paid.
Also, I don't recall it being part of his lecture tour, but a lengthy response to an audience question.

See, I don't understand the attitude here. Why do you feel it's necessary to negate Kevin Smith's career in your post? Why is it necessary to insert that he's basically nothing in the entertainment world compared to Prince? Why was that needed? Kevin Smith is one of the worst humble celebrities in the world.
