I used to adore "When 2 R In Love". And then you came along.

To be honest. When I first started listening to Lovesexy I always fast forwarded the title track 'til the last piece just to get to this song. A mistake I later realized, since I know love "Lovesexy", the track. But back then "W2RIL" blew me away from the first listen. I now understand what actually got me. First off, you have to comment the ending of the title track itself in order to move on. The chaos, the playfullness is just about to end with the climax. THe high pitch voice sequence, for me, is another way of expressing "Uhhh, uhhh fuck me! Fuck me" "Ohhh yeah baby, you got me drippin'. Drippin' all over the floor. Shit I'm horny" .

I just imagine the horniest, nastiest, sexiest orgy or one night stand you'll ever witness. And the, now transformed from female to male, guy is just continuing thrusting and pumping on the parts with "Yeah, yeah. You wan't me to walk right down your halls. Don't you baby" until the "Sweet dreams *kiss* *kiss*" and the fuck chaos fades out with this sucking effect. Like it's saying "that was nasty right? Well, a human being shouldn't be exposed to that madness all the time. Some time you just need to be intimate" AND BANG!!! You just get hit with the drum programming right off the bat.

I always put this song on the loudest level so I can get into my own world for some minutes. The drums on "W2RIL" are spectacular and described by me as...how should I put it...existential. First you get knocked out with the quick combo of two fast high hats followed by two massive kick drums which shortly thereafter "fades" out with the help of the same sound effect. Out to eternity, to nothing, to black. And then the piano chords are scaled, but my god how effective. The tapping all the way through the chorus combined with the sudden horns just fits perfectly. A fucking brilliant hornline in just about one second and flowing together with the piano. It's pure bliss.

This piece of music throughout the whole song is just what I wanted, what the album needed. I didn't need Adore pt2. That song was already done and he took the next step in the ballad world. When I first heard it I ranked it as my number one, easily. However, nowdays I feel stupid or should be ashamed of myself for giving this song high praise.

When listening to the P&B podcast, their conclution was that it was his ugly child that neither fitted the Black Album or Lovesexy. And so they all gave it the skip mark. And several occations on this site you never see the song mentioned in the same level as his other ballads. I get very upset and frankly pissed off when I hear or read something like that. This song is so overlooked and really close to my heart. I don't know why, but I still think the production is ace and adored by me. Your thoughts?

now that i've managed to plod my way through all that, i can say that i agree with you.

it's one of my favorite prince ballads. probably the one i've listened to most. it's just a

brilliant song to me and i still don't understand why so many people dislike it. there is

an atmosphere to it that i just love.

Ten years from now, you'll probably rediscover the song and wonder why you ever forgot how good it was.

Un like you, I often skipped it at first but now I appreciate the artistry of it -- it's for sure one of Prince's better 80s ballads.

It's one of those bad Prince songs, that end up becoming special to you, just because you are a Prince fan and accostomed to his style. I remember thinking it was badly under-produced when it came out. Now I also think it is badly written, as well. Not that it matters, I love it ayway.

The title suggests you no longer like the song, but your post says otherwise?

Thanks for pointing out that. I had not realized that aspect of it.

Some say it's the one song that doesn't fully fit the rest of the album, but it does have quite a lot in common with, say, "Rockhard In A Funky Place" in that respect.

i ALWAYS thought 'when 2 r in love' and 'condition of the heart' were his greatest ballads...no disrespect to "adore" or "its gonna be lonely"

Like someone mentioned, it's all about atmosphere and like ufoclub said, it's dark almost out of key mood. I would say that the verses are borderline depression until the chorus kicks in and the great RnB elements show up. Upon listening to it yesterday and again today I wished he would have made a loooong bridge with the horn section that are playing the last ten seconds or so. And layering his voice on top of that in some way. I think it had the unfortunate fate of being a year behind Adore.

Now I love Adore, but in the same way as I love "W2RIL", Scandalous and Insatiable.

When 2 R In Love is a classic ballad with intricate vocal layerings and a very interesting backround drum beat with lyrics to die for. My favorite genre of Prince's music has always been his ballads and this song is right up there in my top 3. As far as this song being some ugly child that's ridiculous. It works very well on Lovesexy and Prince was just figuring out things with the black album in 87/88. So what? It doesn't take away from the beauty of this song. Nice choice Wolfie87

I always tend to skip this song, but I don't think it's bad. I feel sort of sorry for it, it doesn't really have a home. On The Black album it's just such a stark contrast to the other tracks, it's just kind of...there, in the middle of an album where just one track ago we were listening to tales of diamond rings the size of mice.

On Lovesexy he had a very strong narrative and W2RIL just seemed kind of put in there. It probably feels so out of place on Lovesexy again because it wasn't written for the album. Like, most songs on Lovesexy are pretty personal and written from first point of view.

I think the track would be best suited to something like the ballads compilation he was thinking of releasing in the early 2000's.

YES!!!! i've been saying that for years but no one ever agrees or even notices.

those last 20 seconds are just sublime. it's like the whole song just expands as

if a bubble pushes the music outward. i literally broke the cassette tape due to

rewinding that bit over and over and over and over again.

Ever since my second listen of Lovesexy back in '88, this song had always meant one thing to me: "I Wish U Heaven is next! I Wish U Heaven is next!". It took a long time before I could really judge it on its own merits.

Now that I can, what I love so much about it is that it is SOOO intimate. There's no 'frontin'' here, like you might say there is on songs like Insatiable or Shhh... it's like being a teenager and taking your clothes off for somebody for the first time - exciting, scary, and glorious.

I assume u're a teenager, or u wouldn't be so affected by other people's opinion on something u enjoy. U will see with time that year after year u won't care much anymore about such things. U'll come to realize that u actually don't need others to endorse your personal tastes.

If you slowed "Alphabet St." down to the tempo of "When 2 R In Love", you would have one hellofa mash-up.

"Drip-drop, drip-drop, water, water, water come bathe with me. Let's drown in each other in each others emotions" is just a powerful, weird and beautiful lyric.
