Parade or Lovesexy?

Haven't listened to Prince for a while and dug out these two to play in the car.

They where never my favourites when they first came out. I guess the black and white film put me off the Parade and Lovesexy just wasn't as instant as SOTT.

I cant believe how good they both sound now!

Parade

Kiss was the big but Christopher Tracy's Parade, New Position, Girls & boys e.tc all sound fresh. Sometimes It Snows in April is haunting!

Mountains is probably most on repeat. Great album so different from Purple Rain and ATWIAD.

Lovesexy

Eye no is a great opening track. Alphabet St. is a killer but I could do without Cats rapping! My favourites are the last 3 songs When 2 R in Love, I wish u Heaven and Positivity.

Sheila E drumming is great. Princes Guitar playing is awesome. The fact the CD plays as a single track used to a annoy me but fair play the album should be listened to as a whole.

Which do you prefer? and what are your thoughts? Thanks

Parade > Lovesexy

even tho "Dance On", "when2Rinlove" and the song "Lovesexy", are better than anything on Parade....Parade has aged better, and plays better start to finish

Easily Parade for me. I just love that album and to me it is much better than LoveSexy. Lovesexy's songs are not as strong IMO and it is too over the top productionwise for me. It was the first album where I started wondering if I still really liked Prince's new music. ALmost 30 years later I am still following him though, so he must have done something right.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

"Parade"- no question

"Lovesexy":

-"Eye No" is more interesting than an actual good song to me. Same for "Dance On".

-"Alphabet St." I remember being slightly disappointed in this leadoff single & cheap looking video. The extended bit with Cat is more noise than music to me. Has aged pretty well tho.

-"Glam Slam" & "Positivity" were a little bland, considering the music he released up until then. "When 2 R In Love" was already familiar to those of us who already had "The Black Album".

"Anna Stesia" was the centerpiece & fabulous. "Lovesexy"- I love how layered with sound it is and don't understand the criticism of that. Although it's "one track" and supposed to be a statement--it feels slightly patched together. It's ambition is miles ahead of what he does now, in my opinion.

"Parade" was and is for me the most visionary and artistic album in his discography. It's playful, inspired, creative as heck, complex, sophisticated, fun. Love the black and white imagery, the music videos, the 12" singles, the level of Revolution and Clare Fischer imput. Nobody else was doing anything else like this, and with such confidence.

Love 'em both. They will always be # 1 & 2 in my P album top ten. Lovesexy would be # 1, but that's only because I got that one first.

Although I like LoveSexy, and think it's better than anything he's released since 1995, for me PARADE easily wins this one.

Eye Know isn't a great song to me, and the last half of Alphabet St. starting with Cat's rap is jarring to listen to. Also, "Girls & Boys, love God above" part of Anna Stesia turns me off.

Lovesexy. I can't think of anything that sounds like that album (not even from Prince) It's such an original statement. Several of the songs on Parade on the other hand mimic existing styles. I also think Parade is a bit faux sophisticated.

The wooh is on the one!

Parade. No competition for me. cool

I like Lovesexy, it's a great album and I love 'Glam Slam', 'Annastesia', 'I Wish U Heaven' and 'Postivity'. But Parade is possibly Prince's best released album, (it's my joint favourite with SOTT, Dirty Mind and TRC).

Parade 4 me, I love them both

But Parade overall is a wonderful packaged gift.

It feels sunny

It moves through so fast that when Sometimes It Snows in April ends your left wanting more

So of course (thank U Prince) I have to add in the long versions/Bsides:Kiss, Love or Money AnotherLoverHolenYourHead, Mountains & Alexis de Paris. And some outtakes and it still makes me want more

Both albums actually give you an explosion of sounds and colors (feel like Parade was just right, and Lovesexy went over the line just a bit too much)

I don't think there is an instrument out there that is not on this album

Parade is an extremely organic album

.

Christopher Tracey's Parade always gets me in the mood to create, a color video 4 this song would have been perfect. The sounds and lyrics actually give the image of parade

New Positions steel drums and percussion/bass heavy steaminess

I love these 2 back 2 back both very sexy come ons

and I'm glad they inserted the crowd chanting and laughing, sounds like something naughty

I Wonder U for me is a steamy 'quickie' of lust but classy high society lust. Your eyers witnessed a sex act but didn't realize it for sure so you have to listen over and over again
I always thoughg Under the Cherry Moon could have had a hot guitar solo, but I love it's intensity

Girls & Boys is funky song, bigger sound(full band) I never tire of this one, the dance track

Venus de Milo (prepared me for Sometimes It Snows in April) full of hopeful meloncoly just a beautiful intimate piece

Mountains another one that just makes me happy. When I first heard this one I knew there had to be an extended version. And was glad when it came. Playful

Kiss what more can be said... thank U Prince Brown Mark David Z and Mazarati

AnotherLoverHolenYoHead, gave us another punch of energy, love the use of the electric guitar on this, the middle eastern touchs(thought the album as well) along with the French touch

Sometimes It Snows In April, left me breathless, perfect ending to this album

.

Parade for me has a feeling of mystery, and sublime danger(or tragedy)

This is definately mature music 4 people with taste for the finer things of life.

A timeless album

Much more eloquently put than my reply, but have to say I fully agree. Over time I've started to like this album better and better and it is now my favorite Prince album of all time most likely.

Parade. The extended versions of Mountains and Anotherloverholenyohead are amazing and the B-Sides Love or Money and Alexis de Paris are among my favorites of all his B-sides (don't know why they weren't included on The Hits / B Sides). In fact, Parade is probably my favorite Prince album of all time. Lovesexy is a great album, and Lovesexy the song is one of my favorites but Parade comes in first place!

Parade for me. It amazes me how ATWIAD was supposedly Prince's "Sgt. Pepper", but to me Parade is far more out of left field than the Purple Rain follow-up. It's a preview to the Crystal Ball that never was. So much collaboration with The Revolution, brilliantly simple and poignant songwriting.
.
Lovesexy is a statement album and is wonderful, but it stands in the shadow of Parade, along with many other Prince albums, many of which are also incredible.

Parade. New Position and I Wonder U are short enough to forget about their lack of inspiration.

The interesting aspect of Lovesexy is: the album sees Prince struggling with all his musical might against the loss of inspiration.

I used to prefer Lovesexy but over time I started to appreciate Parade more. Lovesexy is somehow fresh and its style is very different comparing to other albums but for me it is a little bit 'too much'. I need to be in a mood to listen to it. On other hand Parade's beginning used to be too loud for me but other time I started to dig it. I love the melody of Parade, somehow old fashioned and French, you name it. It never stops to surprise me what new sounds and styles I can find there. To be fair the same comes for Lovesexy when you can discover some new sounds after another listen. But if I had to choose I'd go for Parade these days.

Didn't Prince say he wasn't satisfied with the result of Parade because of it being rushed etc. Haha, he really doesn't know anything about the quality of his music.

Yeah that was deflecting, the music had too many options to choose from

If Parade was rushed, then what was Lovesexy, and album he recorded in less that 3 months(?)

The issue was not the music but the movie that did not feature the music(with live renditions)

I Wonder U is pure poetry in heat, I never got 'lack of inspiration' from that one

I love the sounds of New Position, the music is perfect.

Dream on. New Position and I Wonder U are little segues. More sketches than proper songs.

Lovesexy is a testament of Prince being unable to connect with the Zeitgeist anymore. A great struggle nonetheless.

So full of inspiration that he rarely, like 98% of the time, performs anything from the Lovesexy album

Dream on?

Proper song? Is that the standard for inspiration? The sketches combined with Fisher's (heavily edited) orchestral arrangement is the most original statement on Parade. Therefore the most inspired.

Prince being unable to connect with the Zeitgeist anymore? What does that mean?

2 of my faves ever. I wore the hell out of Lovesexy when it came out so that whole time for me was kind of magical. Parade I clicked with later but for me they are both untouchable.
