There is distortion in some of the songs, which is unfortunate. The version of The Ball has the beginning dialog clear and intact which is very cool.

Except for the beginning of The Ball, I like the quality of the Pimpsandwich version better. Actually, Rebirth Of The Flesh and The Ball on this release both sound pretty good.

The Ball sounds lovely and clear...but I always think its a pale comparison to I know. So Glad he binned this at the time.

It's great to finally have The Ball in perfect quality. There's so many instruments and background noises I never noticed before. Very nice release.

A little too much distortion on some of the loud parts, but well worth the price of admission smile

A clearer version of The Ball? I guess I need to try to find this.

Does "Joy In Repetition" have the delayed bass drum intro ?

The Ball and Rebirth Of The Flesh are definitely clearer than any version I've heard

Just did a few tests on this. The spectral analysis checks out - everything from Crystal Ball is from the same source.

-

Also, If I Was Your Girlfriend doesn't have it's intro, which is how the original was (a lot of people forget this when making the fan-made versions). And of course this has the proper version of Crystal Ball (again, fans seem to use the no-orchestra version for some reason). I would have thought that ICNTTPOYM would have a peice of the blues part in before the solo, but maybe that's just how it was for Dream Factory.

The Flesh cuts off at 16khz, theefor, most likely not a lossless source.

Crystal Ball was Prince's crowning achievement. Pure Prince. Should have been released at the time.

i really like crucial and train from this era but it does not have them as probably could not find a crystal clear source . its not too exciting if you have heard the stuff already if you haven't then it probably is worth getting

Damn!

Because I hear it as a different mix. In the syncopated drum intro, the guitars intertwining at the end just screams (and the source replication is not the entire culprit).

Like "Moonbeam Levels". On the poor quality version circulating, the mix balance is different, the global compression also. It's lightly sped up.
Might be the replication process, but still, they sound like different mixes to me, probably a rough mix before the final.

The version that ended on GB is waaaay too clean, all the tension is gone.

I suspected it was an original source but couldn't be certain just by listening.

A few things I noticed -

The Ballad of Dorothy Parker has some tape hiss that I find kind of puzzling. Was it that way on the original CB album? I's not there on the official SOTT version.

Play in the Sunshine has got some serious kick to it, whereas the SOTT sounds flat by comparison.

Strange Relationship gets distorted at parts, there's some crackling in the Cross that I never noticed on SOTT; and The Ball has that brief intro that has never been on any of the circulating boots, and the drums, percussion and vocals are so clear and up front, but the mix sounds a little muddier than previous bootleg versions I have heard.

So glad to finally have an original source for Crystal Ball, if this is indeed what this is, instead of the fan made compilations. If this is what we have, this is reason to celebrate, people! This is huge!!

One final note - I would not have bundled it together with The Flesh. The sound discrepency is too much. The Flesh sounds booming and over loud, and then when Rebirth of the Flesh starts, it's a sonic letdown. Also, I don't like how they broke the flow of the Crystal Ball tracks. My solution, put the configuration of Crystal Ball itself on 2 CDs and enjoy that way.

I agree!

But I also wonder if this new one is not an original configuration source. Very intriguing if it is.

I really don't think this is a fan made comp, the songs all sound like they are from the same source. I'm convinced this is an original source.

I love the intro to The Ball.

Also this release has Adore ending the album. Was it a previous misunderstanding that It's Gonna Be A beautiful Night ended the album?

It's a great release.

I do agree that they should have released The Flesh on it's own.

I've burnt it on two 2 discs

Disc 1 sides 1,2 and 3

Disc 2 Sides 4,5 and 6

A wonderful release.

Princevault has this release's sequence (ending with It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night and Adore in that order) in its entry, noting an "in-house cassette sequence" as a basis for the order (and Adore is listed as "Adore (Until the End of Time)". Might this be that in-house cassette?

Maybe I just forgot how good these tracks were, or how much was in them--but I'm hearing tons of stuff I don't remember in the released tracks. Oh--hear comes The Ball, which should sound different. But I don't know what's up with all these others.
