Still Waiting - original longer version on initial "Prince" LP release

I understand that the initial pressing of this vinyl album has a 12 second longer version of Still Waiting, compared to other pressings and the CD release. Is it only on the US issue or also on other countries' versions such as Europe/UK?

Per:

http://www.princevault.co...ll_Waiting

"Still Waiting is the seventh track on Prince's second album Prince, and, five months after the album's release, Still Waiting was released as the album's third single. Unusually, the original vinyl version of the album contained a version of the track with a longer fade-out, some 12 seconds longer than on later releases.

Still Waiting

"Prince" original vinyl version

*The compact disc version is a reissue from the LP.

Still Waiting (4:14)"

My take is that the original vinyl release would be inclusive of all regions in which the record was initially shipped. It was released "worldwide" in October, 1979. The Still Waiting 7" single featured a 3:48 minute edit with the exception of the New Zealand single which got the full 4:24 minute version for some odd reason.

I've heard that the 4:24 version of Still Waiting will be the only bonus track on the forthcoming PR remaster.

I just remember being a bit miffed when i got the CD cuz the intro was cut, the first measure was missing. Don't know if that was a mistake or not, sounds like the intro just got slashed by accident. The guitar intro was about twice as long on the original vinyl version from the LP.

It's a nice rarity to own but honestly those 12 additional seconds don't change much of the listening experience. I do hope, however, that if the album is ever rereleased the original cut would be restored.

I always thought that both the LP and cassette had the long version and that only when time came for the CD reissue the edit replaced it, but could it be that it was also changed on later reissues of the LP as well as the cassette?

I've also always wondered who decided to do this and why: unlike Michael Jackson who kept re-editing and remixing his albums for the next few years after release (to the point that the original versions of Off The Wall, Bad and History are near impossible to find nowadays), Prince never ever changed a thing to an album after release, except in that one case, and I've always wondered if he did it by himself or if it was some crazy folk at WB messing up with the album for some unknown reason eek

I agree with your feedback. The edit seems unnecessary. What logic was in play with that call and was it Prince's decision? hmmm

RE: JIR

I used to have the cassette but can't remember the difference - was it just that it had a slightly longer ending?

Correct. Slightly longer fade out at the song's conclusion.

Yes seems to end rather abruptly on the LP/Cd version, whereas is has a more satisfying end on the cassette. Unlike the beginning!

The longer version was available on the HDTracks release. Looks like it is available on Pono as well

I don't think it was a purposeful decision to have this song on the CD be any different than the vinyl or cassettte version. I think it's a result of sloppy conversion and CD mastering. I had an early pressing of Joni Mitchell's Blue on CD, and the first note of "All I Want" (the very first song on the disc) was chopped short. Minor, but very noticeable to anyone who had that album in its original format.

The edit on the CD is from a single so it has to have been done on purpose by someone.

I read that the first segue on Rave Un2 was actually 12 seconds long on the initial pressings, rather than 9 seconds. It changes everything.

Fade at the end as it doesn't segue into Love Machine.

There's only a 9 second version. I was bullshitting about the 12 second version.

I would imagine that this would apply to the vinyl version of GB as well as JIR ends the B side.
