How would you edit 'Graffiti Bridge'?

Whenever 'Graffiti Bridge' is discussed, the consensus seems to be that it could be a great album if it wasn't plagued by filler. So how would you shorten it?

I usually go with:

1. Can't Stop this Feeling I Got
2. New Power Generation
3. Release It
4. The Question of U
5. Elephants and Flowers
6. Round and Round
7. Joy in Repetition
8. Thieves in the Temple
9. Still Would Stand All Time

This cuts it down to just under 40 minutes, which is a good length for a pop album and eliminates all the filler.

Some people recommend removing only the non-Prince songs. That doesn't work for me, however, because I've always enjoyed 'Release It' and 'Round and Round', whereas I can't get into 'We Can Funk' and 'Tick Tick Bang' (neither the released nor the unreleased versions).

'We Can Funk' especially is a song that I really want to like, and God knows I've given it plenty of chances, but unfortunately to my ears it's directionless and uninteresting. Shame really.

Finally, I love the extended mix of 'Thieves in the Temple' ('Ultimate' was my first Prince CD, and for a long time it was my favourite song on there), but I'm not sure whether it would fit in the context of a stripped-down 'Graffiti Bridge'. It's something I should try one day.

Good question ,

I think the only non prince that works is "release it"
We can funk is good , but a shadow of the demo.
Prince tried to add the p funk element , that doesn't quite work.
See erotic city for that.
Some great songs , question, joy, thieves,
A missed opportunity .

The film however ..... An edit of 90 plus minutes would do it.lol.

First, throw all the footage to the garbage along with the script.

Then, keep all of Prince's songs except the title track, and keep a few of the protégés tracks

Hire a Canadian National Film Board animator to draw Prince recording the songs in his studio along with imagery inspired by the lyrics -- but not too much.

Mix, then ship for free to the legions of traumatized fans who tragically saw it, as compensation for pain and suffering.

To me, the guest tracks felt like throwaways that narrowly escaped the Vault. I think GB would have been a much stronger solo effort if he stayed away from the new jack swing influence and stuck to the bouncy pop-rock stuff.

  1. Can't Stop this Feeling I Got ('86)
  2. We Can Funk ('86)
  3. Joy in Repetition
  4. Still Would Stand All Time
  5. Thieves in the Temple
  6. Melody Cool (Prince vocal)
  7. Elephants & Flowers
  8. The Grand Progression

You could take out the non-Prince songs and add the leftovers from the unreleased "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic abum"

You know that We Can Funk/Fuck that's on GB is taken from the original 1982/83 version. The 1986 version is the remake. Prince used the original funk version to incorporate George Clinton's funk into the movie.

It's hard to explain why,but this album feels unfocused to me.Some cool songs throughout, but I don't know....the songs don't blend well together on the same album.

Interesting. What would you have done with 'The Question of U'? Released it as a B-Side? Or are you one of those rare people who doesn't like it?

You know, I just put this one on today, front-to-back, for the first time in a long time. It's actually a lot of fun, if you just close your eyes and pretend it's the 90s. cool

Except for that 'rap' in Round and Round. I winced in 1990, and I winced even harder today. lol

Me too

As for the album I'd probably only get rid of Shake seen as I never really listen to it. The rest can stay. It's in my top 3 Prince albums though so I'm biased.

I have no idea how some of u can believe the 1986 versions of WCF and CSTFIG could make any sense in the context of GB. Why not the 1980 version of Tick Tick Bang while we're at it? They're great but their organic, loose jam session sound has virtually nothing to do with any of the album's other tracks!

At first I thought you meant "the movie".

My final cut would have been about a minute and a half long.
Mostly made of the Tick Tick Bang routine.

I dunno, everything is so badly produced...
It's good studio wizardry, but it has aged, not in a good way.

Even if you remove the weakiest songs, you're still left with a curious compilation
of disparate moods, and most of all, eras, that don't sum up to what I call "an album".

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

You simply add a coda to the very end of the credits using the part where the kid wakes up on the floor of his parent's basement. like he just had a bad nightmare of the future. That would justify Graffiti Bridge completely...it was all a dream!

.

.

.

Oh wait, you meant the album?

Walking alone in the dark, I see nothing u see
I can be in a park, or flying in the…in the deep sea
I wish u’d hold my hand; then everything could b

Interesting. What would you have done with 'The Question of U'? Released it as a B-Side? Or are you one of those rare people who doesn't like it?

I'm not terribly familiar with that song, so I skipped it. I lost my whole Prince collection (albums, bootlegs, everything) so I can't go back for a re-listen.
