The 2010s so far in Prince music

I think Prince is so far having a decade that I would not have expected to be so interesting if you had asked me 10 years ago. I was expecting him to show his usual flashes of brilliance on records and keep being great live, but an album like Art Official Age didn't seem to be in the cards. Prince, finally mastering the poppy "contemporary" sound in his older age? Unthinkable -- he was going to do jazzy stuff to be more like Miles as he grew older, not still commenting on music today musically. Because that's what AOA is, it's Prince song-0-gram to people out there still interested he what he thinks of music.

To me, AOA is a work of love and spirit, he has harsh words for the music scene today but his genius comes through and the songs were clearly crafted carefully. People have qualms about chipmunk voices, lasers, fog horn effedts and compression, but this was probably all done intentionally as a "meta" thing -- Prince is often too clever by half, it's just his way.

What songs from the decade would you include on a sampler?

I'm a huge fan, but this decade's a little slim. My playlist:

Time
Groovy Potential
RNR Remix 7
Way Back Home
The Gold Standard
Oui Can Luv
White Caps
Another Love
Clouds
Lauvaux
Laydown

But he still has 5 more years. smile

It's an okay decade. Plenty of songs I like, but compared to his past decades it has been the least interesting.

Unfortunately, too much of this current decade has been Prince trying to gag the net, take down Youtube videos and write cheques with his mouth that his body can't cash (Purple Rain re releases), along with some bizarre releasing patterns until September last year.

.

Had it been before Sep 2014, I would have nothing to say positive about Prince in the 2010's, I almost consider 20Ten a 2000's production sounding a lot like Lotusflow3r era out takes, although it has held up over time.

.

Now I have to say that AOA was a very strong album and proved he still has at least some of his musical talent. PLE showed the more usual post 1988 Prince release with a few gems and a lot of badly conceived filler and showcasing of marginally talented females. Listening to the 20Ten album again has shown how strong it is and also some of the better in between songs.

.

Good 2010 - 2014 songs

I liked Extralovable Reloaded and chunks of AOA + Anotherlove, but looking back I haven't loved any official releases. Most of it was about on par with the High era, awkward and toothless.

The 2010s have been okay in Prince music I think. THere was some nice tracks that came out. However as a full length release I felt has alot of oomph was Lotus Flow3r. Art Official Age was not bad however, it was punchy and had some good tracks on it. Just needed some guitar action in that funk. Would have loved a gut wrenching guitar solo in The Gold Standard...and more moments like The Gold Standard..which was funky as all hell. The rest of AOA more so trailed on mid-tempo side.

Sticky Like Glue

Lavaux

Act of God

Breakfast Can Wait

The Gold Standard

AnotherLove

Aint Turnin Around

Way Back Home

Groovy Potential

Boyfriend

Screwdriver (which should have been on AOA or Plectrum)

Plectrum Electrum (great instrumental)

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Interesting that many have Groovy Potential on their list, even though it was only released digitally. It would be on my list as well. Actually it's probably my favorite from the 2010s. And I suspect he recorded more songs in that style in the same time frame, as he seemed to be working a lot with the Hornheadz around 2011-13.

The wooh is on the one!

I like the mentions thus far, and I would add
Octopus Heart
BoomStratus
Let's Go Crazy Reloaded
That Girl Thang
Midnight Blues
U Will B
Don't U Wanna Fall In Luv 2nite
Chapter & Verse
The Sweeter She Is

Givin' Em What They Love
Superconducter album

Saw Rita Ora on the Oscars, would love to hear those songs they did together released. He is definitely recording more music than he is releasing in the 2010s
